A narrator describes the concept of children being raised in the Deeprealms called home after a long war, then explains that a force of mysterious soldiers attacking those Deeprealms on that very last day. Parents fought valiantly to keep their children safe. One such child, a girl named Kana, found herself wandering lost alone through rain, with no idea of the events to come.

We find Kana walking alone in the rain, carrying her father's katana, crying and apparently grieving over her father's death; this continues as she delves deeper into a forest and runs into Mitama and Selkie, the former offering to heal Kana up, the latter noticing no injuries. Kana asks Mitama and Selkie who they are, and they promptly introduce themselves after which Kana does likewise; Mitama asks Kana what has brought her to the area, to which Kana states that she doesn't have a home to go back to anymore—her village, house, and father were all smashed, and she's in this predicament because she couldn't fight and now doesn't know what to do. Mitama then asks Kana what exactly she saw, to which Kana explains that she was too busy running away, only recalling how a bunch of soldiers appeared out of nowhere, after which Mitama and Selkie state that they're in the same predicament and then asks Kana to attempt to remember things; Kana explains that she wanted to fight, but she was too small, the soldiers were too strong, and her father was too late to do anything except tell her to run even if she didn't want to—and as she ran, she heard a scream behind her, and that was the last time she saw her father, even as she found a hiding place in the forest to wait for him in vain. As Mitama apologizes to Kana for her predicament, Kana explains that her father left her his sword, making a few guesses as to what it's called and getting its name, Yato, correct on her second guess, and states that her father told her he'd take care of the soldiers just as long as she protected the sword; Mitama then asks how Kana's father could attempt to fight off the invaders without his sword, to which Kana states that her father can turn into a dragon, after which Selkie states her father can also transform—in this case using a Beaststone to turn into a kitsune. Kana finds herself in wonder over Selkie's father's abilities, then states that she's not like her father—she wishes she could transform or even heal people like Mitama can, then implies that her father would still be alive if she could do those things; Selkie reiterates that they feel for Kana as the same ordeal happened to her and Mitama, then reveals that another bunch of soldiers appeared to attack them and thus they ran out all the way into this forest. Mitama states that she and Selkie also couldn't save their fathers, with Mitama stating that she was useless in the attack on her home—her father called out to her several times, but she was sound asleep inside of their manor, and by the time she woke up, their home had already been surrounded by troops; her father fought heroically to attempt to give her time to escape and meant to come with her, but she lost sight of him for an instant and he was nowhere to be found by the time she got her bearings, stating that she doubts he still lives, and also expresses how things might have turned out differently if she were awake or if she hadn't lost sight of her father at the wrong time. Mitama then asks Selkie if she was separated from her father in her Deeprealm, to which Selkie states she didn't see her father there—she ran toward this area by herself when the soldiers arrived, but did see her father's torn-up scarf in a fort on the way out; Selkie deduces that her father died trying to protect her from the soldiers, yet she never saw a body and thus holds out hope that he's still alive and looking for her, after which Kana states that they really don't know if their fathers are actually dead, then asks Mitama and Selkie what they do next.

We cut to another area of the forest, where we find Kana, Mitama, and Selkie running into a band of Vallite soldiers, with both Kana and Selkie confirming those are the type of soldiers that invaded their Deeprealms; Selkie attempts to jump into action, but Mitama tells her it can't end well for her, after which Selkie states she'll never know unless she tries; Mitama states that she's confident that she does know, as the Vallites have the numbers and that Selkie's the only one of the three of them worth anything in a fight as Kana's too small and Mitama herself can't do much damage wielding her staff around—Mitama then states she's a poet, not a soldier, and her muse is telling her to run. Selkie attempts to protest, but Mitama reveals that Selkie's father risked his life to save hers and that she must honor his sacrifice, after which Selkie agrees to back down but then asks if the shouldn't help two guys she's just seen. The scene pans over to two boys, one of which attacks one of the Vallites with a stringed instrument but misses his mark; Kiragi states that he should have had more practice before taking his father's sacred bow into battle, while Hisame tells him that they're outnumbered and that they should cut their losses and leave. Kana, Mitama, and Selkie run up to Kiragi and Hisame, with Mitama asking Kiragi and Hisame what they're thinking putting themselves into great danger, with Hisame stating that's what he's telling Kiragi but Kiragi insisting otherwise; Kiragi tells Hisame that he can leave if he wants to, as he would see him get hurt over a risk he took, after which Hisame states he's not leaving Kiragi behind—the battle is over, the Vallites won, and even their fathers were no match for them, after which Kana notes the boys' predicaments are the same as those of the girls. Kiragi vows to save his father and thus beat the Vallites, attempting and missing another shot, after which Selkie tells him to give up the pursuit as he can't handle that bow; as the others attempt to convince Kiragi to run, Kiragi states that he hopes he'll get the hang of the Fujin Yumi eventually, and thus vows to not run, after which his next two shots hit their marks and down the nearby Vallites. Hisame and Kiragi celebrate while Kana looks on in wonder, while Mitama states that this doesn't turn the odds in their favor; Kana asks Kiragi to repeat the feat, then asking him how he could teach her how to do a similar feat with the Yato in order to help her fight and possibly save her father, after which Kana and Kiragi talk about the Yato. As Kana states that she's not the one chosen by Yato and thus couldn't do what Kiragi did, Kiragi states that he was pretty much like Kana just a little while back, after which the two of them confidently agree to allow Kana the ways of fighting with the Yato.

At this point, the Fujin Yumi begins glowing to Kiragi's notice, after which Kana notices the Yato is also shining and asks what's going on, that perhaps she messed up somewhere; at this point, the Yato transforms into the Noble Yato, after which Kana notes the transformation (but does not note the name of the Yato's new form), with Kiragi stating he saw the beam of light shoot into the Yato and deduces that the Yato has tapped into the power of his Fujin Yumi, stating he has no idea how it works but that he's not about to question the mechanic. Reinforcements arrive on the scene to Selkie's notice, with Kana asking if they're in the area because of the Noble Yato, with Mitama stating they could have been drawn to the light of its transformation, with Hisame stating the Vallites might be scared of the weapon and are here to attempt to get rid of it before things get worse for them; as Kana begins gaining confidence in her fighting skills, the five of them agree to stop running and fight as a team. After a shift of scene in what appears to be a Nohrian-style castle, the battle begins.

As the leader of the group of Vallites fought in this chapter runs away shortly after the battle ends, Kiragi states that they give chase with Kana agreeing, but are told by a mysterious voice to stay where they are; a ghostly figure arrives on the scene and tells the group it would be better for now not to give chase. Kana asks the ghost who she is, to which the ghost states that's not the question she should be asking right now, but assures her that she is not their enemy—there is not much the ghost can tell them, but assures that she ask of them not to pursue the Vallites; Kana deduces that the ghost is that of a nice person, and states that she feels that they may have met before yet doesn't seem to remember anything about her, after which Selkie states she may have also met the ghost at one point but Kiragi stating he has no memories of doing so even though he admits to having a terrible memory for faces, with Mitama and Hisame begin talking about how memories work. The ghost states that their hazy memories will become clear at the end of this strife and that everything will return to normal, then asks Kana to listen carefully and then asks her if she has a Dragonstone; Kana states that she doesn't have one as she can't turn into a dragon, to which the ghost states that Kana indeed can turn into a dragon—yet it's hard for her to control the impulses that allow her to become a dragon, thus the ghost states she'll grant Kana a stone that will help her channel those feelings through. Once the ghost gives Kana her Dragonstone, she tells her to take very good care of it and never let it out of her sight; as Kana asks if the Dragonstone will allow her to turn into a dragon, the ghost states that the Dragonstone and the Noble Yato will make her fearsome in battle. Kana and the ghost then talk about Yato's transformation process, with the Blazing Yato and eventually the Omega Yato (a.k.a. the Fire Emblem) being its future forms, the Omega Yato in particular being able to allow them to rescue those important to the current group; Kana and the ghost then talk about the group's fathers and how they might not be dead, before the ghost asks Kana if there was something strange about the Vallites they just fought.

We cut to another area, where Shigure, the narrator from earlier, sings the first verse of Lost in Thoughts All Alone, stating it to be a song for one who chooses the cherry blossom over the rose, having such power it can seize control of one's soul—and only it combined with the dragon's stone can grant the miracle they need; as Shigure continues talking about the needed power to end the ordeal, he states he knows what needs to be done full well yet can't stop himself from doing what must be done.

Trivia

  • This chapter, as well as the rest of Heirs of Fate, includes a traditional opening narration at its start, something once commonplace in the series but not seen on a new chapter since downloadable episode 3 of New Mystery of the Emblem, having skipped Awakening completely and also not appearing in vanilla Fates and any of its prior DLC chapters.
  • This chapter is the first paid DLC chapter in the Fire Emblem series not to be referred to as a Xenologue in the North American region and an Outrealm Tale in the PAL region; "Heirs of Fate" appears where "Xenologue" or "Outrealm Tale" would otherwise appear.
