We're a peaceful town, sir. We have no weapons, nor any want for them. We survive by barring our gates to those who might bring us harm—friend or foe. Harsh as it may be, I can't have my people dying on account of other folks' problems...

— The village elder, should Chrom visit his village
|
A Strangled Peace is the third paralogue chapter in Fire Emblem Awakening. As a paralogue chapter, its events are not integral to the game's main storyline and can be done at the player's leisure. In this chapter, the Shepherds must protect a group of villagers turned away from safe haven from a group of Risen pursuing them.
Plot
- Main article: A Strangled Peace/Script
The group has arrived at an area in southeastern Ferox when Frederick tells Chrom that he sees Risen. Chrom also spots a village up ahead, and asks the group to move along. A villager asks to have the village's gates opened, that the dead walk the earth; the villager states that he and his group are from Woodham, up the road, that this village's people know them, and again asks the village to open their gates as the Risen begin to approach him. Back with the main group, Frederick reveals that the townsfolk of this village are known for their hospitality, and is surprised to see that they turned away refugees fearing for their lives. Chrom states that those lives should be saved first, and questions should be asked later. Battle preparations take place at this point; the battle starts once preparations finish.
Should Chrom speak to one of the villagers, he'll ask him if they're all right; the villager thanks Chrom for coming and asks if he's here to help them. Chrom states he'll hold off the Risen, while the villager promises that if they make it out alive, Chrom will be rewarded.
Once the battle finishes, if any of the villagers survived, one of the villagers tells Chrom he doesn't have the words to thank him nor the treasure to pay him, but does offer a small reward; the villager didn't think people like Chrom still existed, and won't forget Chrom's generosity. Frederick asks Chrom if he believes the village will still bar its gates to refugees; Chrom says they will as long as they believe the Risen as someone else's problem. Frederick states that the village claims to love peace, yet the uneasy peace found behind a barricade is not something he would want; in Frederick's eyes, peace begins when the fighting is over and the barricades come down, and hopes the village can see the truth before it's too late. If none of the villagers survived, Chrom states he failed the villagers by letting them die; Frederick tries to comfort him by saying that Chrom gave all that he had, and that is no failure, and they still gave them peace and deserve a proper burial. Chrom states that the villagers deserved to live, cursing himself out over it.

Character data
Note: The returning characters list only those recruited by the time this chapter is unlocked. As a paralogue chapter, there is no set timeframe in which the chapter must be taken on; thus, it is possible to have recruited more characters than the above by the point the chapter is started. The returning characters list also does not include any characters recruitable in other paralogues, as the player may not have taken on any other available paralogue chapters yet. The list also does not include any bonus units, as they are recruitable at the player's discretion.

Strategy
This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.
|
This paralogue can be rather painful, as the NPC villagers take a pre-set path in order to escape instead of trying to avoid the enemy faction's attack range.
