“ | Lang, you have constantly mocked our prince of Altea with your actions. Even if his highness could forgive you, I certainly could not. Come, draw your sword. Even thought I, Jagen, am old, I will not lose to somebody like you. | ” | — Jagen to Lang |

Jagen (Japanese: ジェイガン Jeigan) is a paladin in the Fire Emblem series. He is a high-ranking Altean knight who helps Marth escape when Altea is betrayed and conquered by Gra.
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light
Role
Jagen was one of the Altean knights fighting under Marth while he was in Talys. Jagen informed Marth that Caeda arrived from Talys Castle when she came to inform him that Talys Castle had been taken by pirates of Galder and king Mostyn was held captive. Jagen fought with Marth and the other soldiers to retake the castle. After they retook the castle Jagen accompanied Marth for the rest of the War of Shadows.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
As the first prepromote you get in the entire series, Jagen is the representative of the earlygame prepromotes with high bases, but low growths. While Jagen does have very bad growths those aren't as important because of the generally low enemy quality in FE1, his good bases and being the first unit with access to strong weapons such as the silver lance mean that he will be an effective combat unit for most of the game. While Jagen will fall off in comparison to other cavaliers such as Cain, Abel and Hardin that joins fairly early as well, but with much higher growths. However, because of the relative rarity of promotion items in FE1, along with the fairly low promotion bonuses and statboosting items giving units +4 in their atributted stat means that with a few statboosting items Jagen will be a perfectly viable unit in the endgame as well. Overall, Jagen will be your strongest unit at first and while he won't keep up with some other strong units later in the game, he will still be useful for far longer than his low growths might suggest at first.
Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem
Book 1
Role
Jagen is among the Altean soldiers who help Marth escape the invasion of Altea. He remains at the prince's side as a veteran knight and fights for him throughout the story.

Book 2
Role
Jagen is now Prince Marth's tactician and principal advisor, having succeeded the previous tactician between the events of Book 1 and Book 2. He is no longer a playable unit, since he has retired from combat – instead, his main purpose is to advise Marth and help guide the prince's decisions. He is a constant presence throughout the story and always tries to help Marth make the right choices.
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
Role
Jagen is among the Altean soldiers who accompany Marth in his escape from Altea, following Gra's invasion of the country. If the player is playing the game in Normal Mode, Jagen can be sacrificed in Prologue IV. That makes him a decoy to lead Gra forces away from Marth and causes him to disappear from the rest of the story. If he is not sacrificed, or if the player is playing Hard Mode, the elderly paladin becomes Marth's advisor, stays at his side and fights for him throughout the story.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Jagen is the only unit in the early game who can reliably take hits from enemies, allowing him to bait them to other units. The early game enemies in Shadow Dragon on the hardest difficulty are extremely tough to defeat; no unit can one-round them, but most units struggle to survive against them. Jagen's base speed is only decent and his growths are low, but his bases are higher than those of the other units available when he joins. Jagen's only high weapon rank is in lances and most early enemies use axes, forcing Jagen to suffer weapon triangle disadvantage to deal the most damage by using the Silver Lance, or use a weaker weapon to gain weapon triangle advantage.
Jagen can be reclassed to a Dracoknight once the player has access to the battle preparations menu in Chapter 4. Then, he can use axes, allowing him to manipulate the weapon triangle in his favor when fighting lance users. He still will not double most enemies, but his strength and defense will be higher and there are few enemy bow users. Doing so also gives Jagen flying movement, which allows him to move around the map more easily than as a Paladin.
At some point, other units' stats will begin to catch up to or surpass Jagen's; however, he will still be able to contribute by using forged effective weapons. Since Jagen has a very high base lance rank of B, he can use weapons like the Ridersbane at base level. When the Ridersbane is forged and given to Jagen, he can kill enemy cavalry in one hit even on the hardest difficulty level, and he will continue to do so throughout the game despite his statistical deficiencies. Cavaliers and Horsemen are among the most common enemy types in Shadow Dragon, making the ability to use the Ridersbane very useful. While Jagen is one of a number of units that can accomplish this, he starts the strongest of those that can.
Jagen has fairly low luck; on higher difficulties, he faces crit chances from many enemies, which can get him killed even if he would otherwise survive. Goddess Icons can mitigate the crit chances.
Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem
Role
At some point after the events of Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, Jagen retired from combat. In Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem, he is instead introduced as Marth's principal advisor and the person training new recruits in Altea. He is in charge of training Kris and their fellow recruits, and he is fought as a boss in Prologue 1 during training. Later, he is present during Kris' knighting ceremony in Prologue 8. After the assassination attempt on Marth, Jagen sets out with the prince, becoming his tactician and providing him with counsel throughout the story. He is not a playable unit at any point of the game.

Personality
As a longtime servant of Altea, Jagen is protective and loyal to a fault. He wishes for Marth's wellbeing and makes sure to assist the prince as much as he can, showing his dedication to his position as an Altean paladin. Protecting the prince of Altea is his top priority.[1] He also seeks to provide good advice whenever he can, helping Marth at every opportunity. Whenever he can be of use despite his age, he is glad to be there. If he is sacrificed in the Prologue of Shadow Dragon, his last words are an expression of relief that he could remain useful to the end.[2]
Jagen is determined to do his duty in combat, and later, as an advisor. He never fails to provide advice to Marth and always tries to give useful insights. He concentrates on getting things done and making decisive strategic moves, showing that he favors hard work and taking action. He also does not allow himself to get distracted, putting his duty and obligations over everything else.[3]
After the War of Shadows, once Jagen has become a tactician and recruit trainer instead of a frontline fighter, he continues to be as dedicated to his roles as before. Despite his advanced age, he retains a sharp mind and trademark courage. As a teacher, he is stern and serious, but fair. Nevertheless, his commanding presence and disposition scare some recruits, such as Luke.[4] He can also be quite harsh – few platoons went through his entire training without dropping out.[5]
Despite his seriousness and intimidating presence, Jagen is capable of genuine praise. He commends people for fulfilling their duties admirably, and even if they do not perform up to par, he is willing to help them improve.[6][7] His diligence is admirable on its own, but he is also willing to bring it out in others.
Besides, not everyone sees Jagen as serious and intimidating. Jagen himself is sometimes concerned about how he comes across, but Kris reassures him that he is strict, but kind.[8] He truly cares about the Altean knights and Marth's soldiers as a whole, although it does not show very often.[9] Moreover, he is knowledgeable about the lore of Archanea. He frequently provides information about old stories and legends if Kris does not know the details. This shows that Jagen is more well-read than it appears on the surface.[10]
Jagen's courage was not lost with his age, and despite how old he is, he is still formidable. Even after he had retired from combat, he challenged Lang to a duel once he heard him slander Marth. Despite acknowledging his weaknesses stemming from age, he still firmly believes he can defeat Lang, and Lang is unable to deny it.[11] Jagen remains a loyal and powerful servant no matter what happens, and he is one of Marth's most reliable confidants in every game they both appear in.

Trivia
- According to developer commentary from The Making of Fire Emblem, Jagen was originally going to be killed off during the story of Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light. His death was even planned to make use of an illustration, and was going to mark Marth's coming-of-age by the loss of a guiding adult figure in his life.[12]

One day, terrible monsters descended and the humans were massacred, pushed to the brink of extinction. The few who survived prayed to the gods for salvation. The gods heard their prayers, and a gigantic warrior was sent down to earth. The warrior carried a gleaming blade of light in his right hand, and in his left hand, a shield embedded with five orbs. Then, after a fierce battle, he eradicated the monsters and returned to the heavens. He was our guardian deity, Naga, and this temple is dedicated to him. Lang: Wh... what did you say?! Damn you... I'll remember this!! Once the Emperor gets wind of this, I'll crush your puny little Altea!" — Jagen and Lang, Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem - ↑ "In addition, among the scenes that were cut was one that would take place during Jagen's death. The fallen Jagen was to be sprawled across a pool of blood, with Marth kneeling at his side. It was to be a greatly symbolic scene that would depict a tragic story of a boy coming of age through the loss of the adults he had relied on." — XKAN, Fire Emblem 25th Anniversary Book Scan/Translation Compilation Post, kantopia.wordpress.com, Published: December 10, 2015, Retrieved: February 26, 2019
