The Recruit (新人兵士, Shinjin Heishi, roughly meaning Newcomer Soldier) class is a unit class of lance-wielding foot soldiers who are new to fighting. There is only one recruit in the whole series, named Amelia. Since she is the only recruit in the game, the description of a recruit describes her.
The Recruit class is one of three trainee classes, of which there is only one character in that class. Recruits, like other trainees, start at level 1. Unlike other classes, at level 10, they stop gaining experience and change class at the beginning of the next battle. Afterwards, their level progression is normal - from level 10 to 20, they can change class again.
Recruits change class to either cavaliers or knights after reaching level 10. From then on, they have normal class change progression - cavalier to paladin or great knight, knight to general or great knight. A third option is gained after completing both Eirika and Ephraim's routes; the recruit can stay as a recruit after promotion. This promoted recruit will be denoted as "Recruit (2)". Afterward, they can change class again to either a paladin or stay as a recruit. This last version of the Recruit class, which will be denoted by "Recruit (3)". This last version has a 15% critical hit bonus, but it still only has the use of lances.
Usually, recruits are very weak. However, they gain experience very quickly and have normal growth rates. Amelia has above average growth rates; combined with the extra ten levels to gain stats, she can be a very useful unit in the game.
