Unit performance
Claud is a level 20 High Priest who joins in Chapter 3. He has high magic and resistance, but he is very frail. Claud can use C-rank wind, thunder, and fire magic, but his low HP, defense, and movement prevent him from being useful as a dedicated combat unit. Claud has major Bragi Holy Blood, which increases his HP, magic, luck, and resistance growths; since he joins at a high level, he will make limited use of these bonuses. Major Bragi blood grants Claud ★ rank in staves, allowing him to use every staff in the game, including the Valkyrie staff he joins with.

Claud is a level 20 High Priest who joins in Chapter 3. He has high magic and resistance, but he is very frail, so he should stay away from combat. While he can use C-rank wind, thunder and fire magic, he is not a combat unit by any means. Thanks to his major Bragi Holy Blood, he has increases HP, magic, luck and resistance growths. Since he joins as a high-level promoted unit, though, he will not make much use of these bonuses. What he can make use of is the other advantage of having major Bragi Holy Blood - Claud has a *-rank in staves. It allows him to use every staff in the game, including the Valkyrie staff he joins with.
With Valkyrie, Claud can resurrect a single dead ally per use; resurrecting an ally can be helpful if the player is playing through the game without resetting to try for more desirable outcomes, or when playing for rankings to prevent a reduction in the survival rank—Valkyrie will not reduce an individual unit's losses for the combat rank, however. If the player is resetting, Valkyrie will be of limited use, as Genealogy of the Holy War allows the player to save at the start of every turn. Additionally, Valkyrie can be used only once before it must be repaired, and repairing it costs 30,000 gold; Claud starts with 10,000 gold, but will struggle to obtain the remaining 20,000 without receiving it from a lover or Dew.

Claud is easy to use, as long as he stays away from combat. Since he can use every staff in the game, most of his utility comes from that. His Valkyrie staff lets him resurrect a fallen unit, useful in ironman runs. Having this option allows the player to take more risks, because they can avoid reloading a save. Aside from that, Claud can use any other good staff, including Fortify, Restore, Warp, Physic, etc.
Claud's primary flaw is his low movement. High Priests have below-average movement even for infantry at only 5; Claude shares this movement with Arden, among others. 5 movement prevents Claud from keeping up with the mounted frontline and much of the infantry following them; he can sometimes be unable to reach front-line units even with Physic or Fortify. Claud's low movement is less of an issue in Chapter 3, as he joins in a location where it matters less, but he struggles in Chapters 4 and 5.

Claud's primary flaw outside of his frailty and lackluster combat is that he is unmounted. This prevents him from keeping up with the mounted frontline, and can make it difficult for him to help. He can sometimes be unable to reach frontline units even with the Physic staff. This is not an issue in Chapter 3, because Claud joins in a location where his low movement is irrelevant. But in Chapters 4 and 5, he struggles. In fact, when Claud joins, his movement is even worse than that of other foot units. Most promoted foot classes have 6 move, while Claud only has 5. He shares his movement value with Arden, to put it into perspective. This means he can even fall behind other foot units - and he will.
If Claud and Edain are lovers in Chapter 5, Claud can grant Edain the Rescue staff in an event; this is one of two ways to obtain Rescue in the first generation, the other being through an event in Chapter 4 between Edain and Azelle that requires they be lovers. Neither Claud nor Edain makes strong use of Rescue as they both have 5 move, but Lachesis—when promoted to Master Knight—will have A level staves and 9 move, allowing her to bring units much further than they could move on their own. If Azelle grants Edain Rescue, the player will have access to it in Chapter 4 where it is particularly helpful, but will be unable to use it in the second generation until late in Chapter 8 at the earliest if Claud sires Ced; if Claud grants Edain Rescue, it will be unavailable in Chapter 4, but Edain's daughter Lana can inherit it from the start of Chapter 6; if Rescue is inherited by no one, it can be purchased from the armory in Chapter 10

Claud can get the player the Rescue staff in the first generation. For that to happen, however, he needs to be paired with Edain. Then, he has a conversation with her in Chapter 5 where he gives her the staff. The player will not find much use in it in that chapter, since Edain is a foot unit and the map is enormous. Besides, the first generation ends when this map does. However, this lets the player pass down the Rescue staff. With that, the player can have faster access to it in the second generation.
As a father
Claud's children will inherit Bragi Holy Blood—which increases HP, magic, luck, and resistance growths—but he has no skills to pass down. Claud will always pass major Bragi blood and Valkyrie to his son—or if he marries Brigid, his daughter Patty—regardless of if they can use Valkyrie. The only children that can potentially use Valkyrie if they inherit it are Erinys's son Ced and Silvia's son Coirpre. Alternately as mentioned previously, Claud can marry Edain, forsaking use of Valkyrie in the second generation, but allowing Lana to use every staff but Valkyrie at base and allowing earlier access to Rescue.

Fatherhood
If Claud is Lana's father, she inherits minor Bragi blood, increasing her staff level to A allowing her to inherit and use the high-level staves Rescue and Fortify at base. When not inherited, most staves—especially stronger ones—only become available late in the second generation; for example, Rescue is first available in Chapter 10, and Fortify and Warp in Chapter 9. Like Claud and Edain, Lana has low movement that limits her ability to heal or to use Rescue; Leif, like Lachesis, can promote to Master Knight with high move and A staves—he can provide strong staff utility, especially with Rescue, in the second generation. Claud will greatly reduce Lester's usefulness, however. Lester will inherit major Bragi blood, which does not boost any significant stats for Lester; his strength will be greatly reduced; and he will be unable to inherit any bows. Claud and Edain are easy to pair; they have the same movement and utility, and can spend much time adjacent to each other without drastically reducing either of their usefulness.

Claud's best pairings by far are the pairings in which his son can inherit and use the Valkyrie staff. His other good pairing is Edain. If Claud is paired with Edain, the player gets the Rescue staff in the first generation, in Chapter 5. As mentioned above, they will not find much use in it there, but Lana can inherit and use it. Normally, the second generation's Rescue staff comes much later. However, with a Claud-fathered Lana, it is available from the start. Lana may be a foot unit, so her rescuing is not as good as it could be on a mounted unit, but it still helps. She can speed up the process of seizing the Chapter 6 castles, since the map involves doubling back. The player can also find other uses for it, like teleporting units out of danger. The pairing is very easy to get - Claud and Edain have the same movement and a similar purpose on the battlefield.
Both Claud and Silvia poses Bragi Holy Blood; if Claud marries Silvia, both of their children will have major Bragi blood. Lene's survivability is slightly boosted by the increase to her HP and avoid; however, she inherits nothing else from Claud. Coirpre will not inherit Claud's tomes, but will inherit his staves, including Valkyrie. However, Claud does not significantly improve Coirpre; without Claud as a father, Coirpre has 5 move, slightly lower growth rates, and has A staves—with Claud as a father, Coirpre has 5 move, boosted growth rates, and ★ staves which only grants him use of Valkyrie. Claud and Silvia are relatively easy to pair as they have similar movement, but Silvia is often closer to combat than Claud, and is often given the March Ring and Knight Ring which increases her mobility greatly above Claud's.

Claud's Valkyrie staff pairings are with Silvia and with Erinys. In both pairings, Claud's children inherit major Bragi Holy Blood. This increases their growth rates in HP, magic, luck and resistance, and gives the sons an *-rank in staves. While Claud does not pass down any skills, none of Ced, Fee, Lene or Coirpre need to inherit skills. They are good enough with their base kit.
Both of Erinys's children—Ced and Fee—appreciated the growth boosts from Bragi Holy Blood; as a Sage, Ced uses magic to attack, and Fee can better use magic swords such as the Wind Sword, can better take attacks from enemy magic-users, and gains more avoid. Both units also appreciate the boost to staff level; Fee gains A staves upon promotion instead of a B rank, allowing her to use Rescue and Fortify, something she is especially apt at as a flier; Ced gains ★ staves instead of B, allowing him to use every staff in the game. Pairing Claud and Erinys, however, requires that Erinys—as a flier—be restrained, limiting her contributions to keep her adjacent to Claud.

The Silvia and Erinys pairings are comparable. The Silvia pairing increases Lene's survivability a little, thanks to the increased growths. Beyond that, it does little for Lene. Coirpre, on the other hand, inherits Claud's staves, and can use every staff in the game from the moment he joins. This is the best possible outcome for him, since otherwise he has no unique utility to speak of. He is an A-rank staff user regardless of his father, but Claud gives him an edge over other staff wielders. The pairing is easy to get, since Silvia and Claud's movement is similar, and Silvia can dance for Claud.
Another noteworthy pairing for Claud is with Tailtiu. It is very easy to get, as Claud joins alongside Tailtiu, they have similar movement, and they have a high love point base. Claud passes down major Bragi Holy Blood to Arthur and minor Bragi blood to Tine, improving their growths in four areas, most importantly in magic. However, as Claud does not pass down any skills, both Arthur and Tine will be stuck only with Wrath as a skill. While Arthur will inherit Valkyrie, neither Mage nor Mage Knight is capable of wielding staves; Tine can use staves upon promoting to Mage Fighter, and will have A staves with the boost from minor Bragi blood, allowing her to use every staff but Valkyrie—as she has 6 movement, she is a worse wielder of strong staves than Leif or Fee, but is better than Coirpre or Lana. Additionally, Claud is not the best father for either child. Both children benefit more from inheriting Follow-Up and minor Fjalar blood—which boosts magic more than Bragi blood—from Azelle, or Vantage from Lex to synergize with Wrath. Alternately, Arthur benefits strongly from Lewyn as a father, as he will be able to use the powerful Forseti tome, and will be the only mounted unit after promotion capable of using it.

The Erinys pairing improves both children's growths. Fee becomes better at using magic swords, since her magic growth gets much higher. She also gains an A-rank in staves post-promotion instead of a B-rank. This is important, because it means she can use the Rescue and Fortify staves. Since she can fly over obstacles and has high movement, she is an excellent user of both. It is easy to position Fee for a good Fortify, and she can Rescue other units over mountain ranges. This is especially useful in Chapter 9, where the villages are walled off by a mountain range. Ced, on the other hand, becomes an even better unit than he already is. Not only can he fight well, but he can use every staff in the game. Normally, he can only use staves up to B-rank, but with Claud as his father, he has a *-rank. This is a large improvement to Ced's utility and makes him even more useful to have. This pairing is awkward to get, though, since Erinys is a flier with much higher movement than Claud.

Another pairing worth mentioning for Claud is with Tailtiu. It is very easy to get, since Claud joins alongside Tailtiu and reaches the love point threshold fast. It passes down minor Bragi Holy Blood to Arthur and Tine, improving their growths in four areas. With this pairing, they both have a high magic growth. Since they rely on Wrath for combat, they want their magic to be as high as possible. Claud enables that by increasing their growth in that area. However, since Claud does not pass down any skills, both Arthur and Tine will be stuck only with Wrath. If the player wanted their magic growth to be higher, they could pair up Azelle with Tailtiu instead. Fjalar Holy Blood also increases magic growth, and Azelle passes down Follow-Up. Claud does not. Finally, with this pairing, the player loses access to the Valkyrie staff. Neither Arthur nor Tine will have a *-rank in staves. Arthur cannot use staves even post-promotion, and Tine reaches only A-rank post-promotion. While this does allow her to use the Fortify staff and the Rescue staff, it is hardly ever relevant.
