The [[Cavalier]] class by itself makes both Alen and Lance good. It provides a high [[movement]] range of 7, two weapon types ([[sword]]s and [[lance]]s) for [[weapon triangle]] control and the ability to rescue units and then move in the same turn (allowing rescue drop strategies). Cavaliers also promote to [[Paladin]], which gives them the ability to use [[axe]]s (and thus perfect weapon triangle control), an additional point of movement and very good stat boosts all around.

Alen will likely edge out Lance due to having advantages in HP, Strength, and Defense, while maintaining just enough Speed to double who he needs to double. Of course, both are really good cavaliers with the best availability in the game. The first [[Knight Crest]] you acquire should go to either him or Lance, as they are the best candidates for it. As long as they stay relatively close to their average stats, both Cavaliers will be solid units in your roster throughout the whole game.
Alen and Lance have all their growth rates within 5% of each other, so their differences in performance come down to their supports and their base stats. Compared to Lance, Alen has two less Speed, meaning it will take him longer to start doubling enemies, but two more Strength, allowing him to deal about four more damage on average once he can start doubling.
