Princess of Bern/Script
At the last front near the frontier between Pherae and Bern, a knight of Bern, Melady, looks for the whereabouts of King Zephiel's sister, Princess Guinivere. The princess had traveled to the border of the country, but once there, she disappeared without leaving a trace.
Melady arrives on the border between Lycia and Bern in order to speak with the local castle's commander, Ruud. Princess Guinivere of Bern had gone missing, and Melady is looking for information. Ruud tells Melady that he knows nothing about what happened, prompting her to leave, but then he discusses with his soldiers how Guinivere is currently in the dungeon and he will sell her to Bern's enemies for a hefty sum.

The castle ward, Ruud, admits they have not seen Princess Guinivere since that morning, and Melady leaves to continue on her frantic search.
Roy's forces then arrive in order to meet a group of mercenaries that Eliwood had hired to help him. After arriving, Roy encounters Elen, who tells him that her mistress was captured by the local castle commander while trying to get an audience with Lycian lords. Merlinus advises against an unnecessary battle, but he is cut short by one of the local soldiers finding Roy's group, and a battle begins anyway.

However, once she leaves, Ruud asks to one of his soldiers if Guinivere is still in the basement. He plans to sell the princess to one of Bern's many enemies, and points they won't accomplish very much were they to remain loyal to Bern. The soldier warily agrees, and then reports that Guinivere's servant has disappeared. Ruud, furious, orders to begin the chase.
Soon, the mercenaries hired by Eliwood - comprised of Dieck, Shanna, Lot and Ward - arrive on the battlefield and help Roy's army. The fight ends with Roy's forces killing Ruud and seizing his castle, then finding Princess Guinivere in the dungeon. When she introduces herself, Roy refuses to believe it and thinks this is a trap, but eventually calms down and asks her why the sister of the King of Bern would come to Lycia peacefully. Guinivere explains that she disagrees with her brother and seeks a peaceful solution to the war, prompting Roy to accept her company, as he plans to meet with Lycian lords himself and he wants Lord Hector's opinion on the matter.

On the other side of the border, Roy and Merlinus are trying to confirm whether this is the agreed meeting place. Seeing nobody, they decide to wait for the mercenary band, but a woman runs into them. She apologizes, but after hearing Roy, she asks if he's from Lycia. Roy presents himself, and the woman, Elen, asks for their help; while traveling to meet someone from the Lycian League, she and her lady were captured. Elen managed to escape, but her lady is still in the castle.

Merlinus refuses, arguing that they should not get into unnecessary battles. Roy hesitates, but one of the soldiers after Elen spots them and calls the rest of the troops. As Bern started, Roy says they have no option but to fight back, and a battle starts.

Very soon, a band appears from the south. They are the mercenaries hired by Lord Eliwood, and Dieck, their leader, sends a pegasus knight, Shanna, to see whether their employers have arrived. She returns and tells her fellow mercenaries that yes, they are here, and they are already fighting. Dieck decides to head straight for the battlefield, leaving explanations for later.

After conquering the castle, Merlinus informs that they found a lady in the basement – Elen's lady. She is brought to Roy and reveals herself to be Guinivere, the Princess of Bern. While Merlinus reacts badly to the news, Roy cautiously asks for an explanation of her actions, as he does not find it logical for the sister of King Zephiel to be meeting a member of the Lycian League.

Guinivere explains that it is her wish to stop this war. Roy asks once more, and after Guinivere reaffirms her ideals, he agrees with her and decides to escort her to Lord Hector.

Beginning log
Tucked away in the mountains bordering Bern and Pherae was a small village. This was where Roy was to meet the mercenaries that Eliwood had hired for him. Just to the east of the village on the other side of the mountain stood a small castle keeping watch of the border. When Roy arrived at the village, the castle was in a chaotic state. Little did he know that the turbulence in the castle was going to ripple out to reach the far corners of Elibe...

Merlinus' class is Transporter, which means he can manage the army's weapons and items. The only way for him to gain experience is to be hit, but there is no true reason to level him up; Merlinus will not promote and acquire battle abilities, and contrary to FE7, if he is not on the battlefield, the excess of weapons or items will not have to be dropped. On the other hand, Elen will be the only healer for two and a half chapters, until Clarine joins; should the player be interested in light magic, Elen is one of three possible options, and it is the first to come.

At the beginning of the chapter, the nearest enemies are mostly lance users, but if the units gained some levels in the previous battle, they should not be a problem. The player has just to remember to keep Elen and Merlinus out of the enemy's range. The northern (and only) village has a sword called "armorslayer", which will be useful against the boss. Marcus or Shanna (a new character) can be sent to get this valuable weapon.

This chapter also features the first shops, an armory and a vendor. The vendor will not sell any tomes or staves, so the player may want to skip it. The armory sells some basic swords and lances.

The true action begins in the second turn, with the arrival of the mercenary band hired by Eliwood. With a grand total of four units, the player is introduced to their first axe users, Wade and Lot. Wade is the stronger of the two, while Lot has better speed. The player can use them both (as they support each other and it is rather easy to get) or choose one, according to their preferences. The other two units have also new classes; Dieck is a mercenary—a sword user with good bases and good growths—and Shanna is a pegasus knight (flying unit with good mobility but quite frail). As a flying unit, Shanna does not receive terrain bonus or penalties, which means that she will not receive the avoid bonus of forts and the like, but that she will also not be impeded by mountains or rivers. If the player is not interested in training her, at the very least Shanna can transport other units or visit villages. The only precaution is not to put her on bows' range, as these weapons deal triple damage to flying units.

If the player looks at the map, the mercenaries' starting position is near two forts. They are to be immediately occupied by Dieck and either Lot or Wade, thus facing the incoming army with a bonus to avoid and, if they are hit, the forts will heal some HP at the beginning of the player's turn. The third fighter can wield Lot's hand axe and attack from behind his companions, while Shanna can go to the village or bring Roy closer to the band – as long as the archer near the forts is not dealt with, it is not safe to put her in the forts. There is a small conversation between Dieck and Roy; it does not give anything, though.

The boss can be a problem; he has good defense and a ranged weapon. The player should use either the rapier or the armorslayer (Dieck may be the only one able to wield this weapon, as it has a D rank) to attack him, since axes suffer from low accuracy and the gate gives Ruud extra avoid. If the unit is hit, Elen can heal them, but the player should rescue her or Ruud will attack and, most likely, kill her. Once the boss is defeated, Roy can seize the castle gate and the chapter will end.
