Following the Loptyr Empire's downfall and the rise of the modern nations of Jugdral, Darna came to be regarded as a holy site by Jugdral's people, particularly in [[Grannvale]].  As such, in Grann 757 when reports arrived in Grannvale of an assault on the city by the armies of [[Isaach]] (in reality, only the handiwork of [[Isaach#Rivough|Rivough]]<ref>{{Cite|The leader of Rivough... He's the one who besieged Darna, not my father.|[[Ayra]]|Seisen no Keifu}}</ref>), Grannvale declared war on Isaach, a war which Isaach ultimately lost.  In the aftermath of the [[Battle of Belhalla]], the dancer [[Sylvia]] left her children, [[Corpul]] and [[Leen]], in the Darna convent before disappearing.<ref>{{Cite|'''Leen:''' So you're an orphan, too, huh... In the intervening years, Darna came under the leadership of [[Bramsel]], a former merchant, referred to as the city's Count.  Under Bramsel, Darna acted as a servant state to the Grannvale Empire.<ref>{{Cite|Count Bramsel over there at Darna Castle is the worst! He prances around like some king, as long as there's no Grannvale official's butt to kiss. Oh, how I wish somebody would put that disgusting man out of his misery!|A villager|Seisen no Keifu}}</ref>  When [[Seliph]]'s liberation army came to the Yied Desert, Bramsel sought to defeat him personally in a bid to win the bounty placed upon him, and so deployed his mercenary army following Seliph's capture of Fort Melgln, preying on Seliph's weariness from fighting both the [[Loptyrians]] at the Yied Shrine and [[Ishtore]] at Melgln.  His bid failed, and Darna was seized by Seliph, where he learned from [[Lewyn]] the legend of the Miracle of Darna.
