In the Imperial Year 91, the divine Seiros engages the Liberation King Nemesis in battle and slays him, avenging an incident at the Red Canyon. Approximately one millennium later in 1180, a person named Byleth has a dream of the battle and of a mysterious girl. Afterwards, they are woken up by their father Jeralt. The nobles Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude appear and explain that bandits have attacked them while they were resting at camp. Jeralt agrees to protect them, and he and Byleth ride out. With Jeralt's guidance, the four are able to rout the bandits and injure their leader Kostas.

With Jeralt's guidance, the four rout the bandits and injure their leader Kostas.

As the battle ends, Kostas recovers from his injuries and attempts to attack Edelgard, but Byleth sacrifices themselves to protect her. They have another vision of the girl, who scolds them for being so reckless, introduces herself as Sothis, and grants them the ability to rewind time with Divine Pulse. Byleth redoes the past several seconds and this time counters Kostas' strike and drives him off. At this point, the group is reinforced by the Knights of Seiros led by Alois. Alois recognizes Jeralt and reveals that he was once the respected captain of the Knights of Seiros who vanished approximately 20 years ago; he browbeats Jeralt into returning to Garreg Mach Monastery with him and invites Byleth to accompany them. The three lords thank Byleth for their actions, descend into a bickering match, and offer Byleth a position with their respective homelands.

Normal/Hard
Every player unit is capable of wielding every weapon, and Claude's Iron Bow can be traded multiple times to allow for multiple attacks that the enemy cannot retaliate against; however, units only have a combat art tied to the weapon they start with, notably Dimitri is the only unit with Tempest Lance. Dimitri with Tempest Lance is capable of one-shotting every enemy but Kostas on every difficulty; Byleth with Wrath Strike and Edelgard with Smash can one-shot every enemy but Kostas on Normal and Hard. Enemies on Normal and Hard cannot double any units, but the sword-wielding enemies on Maddening can double a unit wielding the Iron Axe or Iron Lance. On every difficulty, without healing, and from full HP, Byleth and Claude can survive four attacks from the sword-wielding Thieves, while Edelgard and Dimtri can survive five; Byleth, Edelgard, and Claude can survive two attacks from the axe-wielding Thieves, while Dimitri can survive three—Edelgard can also survive three attacks from the west-most axe-wielding Thief; and Byleth and Claude can survive one attack from Kostas, while Edelgard and Dimitri can survive two.
This is the basic tutorial mission of the game. Jeralt will teach you the basics of movement, attacking, Combat arts, and defensive terrain. The moves Jeralt suggests are generally the best way to tackle this map. Something Jeralt does not mention is that all units are capable of using all weapons currently in play and you can trade as many times as you want before waiting or attacking; use this to your advantage to trade around Claude’s bow to pull of uncounterable attacks and weaken the enemy for other units. If you have already decided on which route to pick, it is a good idea to give Byleth and the corresponding lord preference in securing the kill. Additionally, before the map ends, trade all of the other two lords’ weapons to Byleth and your preferred lord as they will leave your party after this chapter.

On turn 1, Weaken the first enemy with Claude and then move in any other unit to secure the kill or just obliterate him with the others’ combat arts. At the beginning of the next turn, move Edelgard into the forest terrain behind the rock to bait two enemies to her and weaken them for easy kills on the next turn. Keep in mind that Curved Shot has 3-range, so Claude can stay behind everyone else to weaken enemies from a safe distance. Once those three units have been defeated, move to intercept the now advancing Kostas at the forest tiles to the east. Dimitri has the highest defense of the four so tank Kostas and one of his lackeys with him on the forest terrain and then defeat Kostas on the next turn to end the map.
Edelgard can safely provoke the western enemies into moving from the forest south of the rock, which she can reach after two full turns of movement; Dimitri can provoke the enemies present only on Maddening from the forest north of him, requiring the same movement. However, provoking both groups at once will require at least one unit to survive at least one additional round of combat, as there are four units but five enemies, and no enemy can be defeated on enemy phase; enemies will prefer to attack the unit with the bow as they cannot retaliate, however, equipping the Iron Bow raises every unit's attack speed to the point where they will not be doubled. Kostas can be defeated after two attacks using combat arts from any unit other than Claude; moving units east as they fight enemies will allow at least two to reach and defeat Kostats the turn after he moves.

Maddening
If a route is already planned to be chosen, it may be beneficial to prioritize giving kills to Byleth and that particular lord; additionally, as the two lords whose routes are not picked will leave the party, trading their inventories to Byleth and the chosen lord may also be beneficial. If there is no plan for a route, items and experience can be given to Byleth.
The enemy has gotten a lot stronger while your units are the same level with the same stats as usual. Enemy Ruffians equipped with swords now have seven AS enabling them to double any unit equipped with an Axe or Lance and the enemy has five movement. On the first turn weaken the enemy with Claude and then secure the kill with another unit. On the same turn, trade Byleth's Iron Sword to Edelgard, this will boost her AS to the point where she will not get doubled, while moving everyone as far north as possible. Edelgard starts in the best position to enter the forest tile behind the rock so have her wait there to intercept and weaken the enemy. Make sure to not place Dimitri on the eastern forest tile as baiting those enemies too will result in you getting overwhelmed. On the next turn, attack with Claude from a tile which enables you to trade around his Iron Bow to weaken enemies with at least one other unit. After routing these enemies, heal with vulneraries if necessary, then place Edelgard or Dimitri, equipped with an Iron Sword, on the lone forest tile to the east and kill the baited enemies on the next turn. Kostas will now advance towards you. Once again, bait the enemy with Edelgard and Dimitri—they have the highest HP-defense combos. Play it slow and defensive here. Make sure no one is in danger of dying on the next enemy phase and that units with heavy equipment only attack with their powerful combat arts (i.e. Smash and Tempest Lance on Edelgard and Dimitri respectively) and then have a sword equipped for the enemy phase if they are still on the front lines—you can change a unit's equipment after they have attacked by trading a different weapon into the top slot of their inventory. Once again, defeat Kostas to clear the chapter.
