Saul joins in Chapter 6 of The Binding Blade and is auto recruited along with Dorothy from turn 1. It's usually recommended to trade him a Heal staff since Mend staffs are still relatively rare at that point in the game. Upon joining, Saul has the best bases and the highest Staff rank out of all the unpromoted healers, because of this he'll most likely be the first unit to reach B and A-rank in staffs. This means that Saul will be your premiere user of higher ranked staffs such as Physic, Rescue, Sleep and most importantly Warp. As Elen, Clarine and other staff users before Niime and Jodel will never reach A-rank staffs on any moderatly fast playthrough and thanks to his decent Magic base and growth he'll usually be your best warp user after promotion in the midgame anyway. He also has a very high Resistance growth ensuring that he'll almost never get hit by enemy status staves, so it's recommended to usually deploy him at the bottom of your unit deployment order as enemy staff users are more likely to target characters who are lower on your unit deployment order.
Upon promotion, Saul gains an additional staff rank, and a D-rank in Light magic. This is important considering that Bishops have an EXP bonus from combat in FE6. More EXP would lead to more chances of leveling magic for Saul, further improving his warp range. He also has a high Speed base and growth, allowing him to double most enemys and even ocassionaly secure kills, despite the low might of light tomes.
Despite being a useful unit, Saul has his fair share of weaknesses. He has low base Defense and a low grotwh as well, this combined with his equally low Luck ensures that he'll usually die in 1 or 2 hits against physical units and be suceptible to low percent crits agains enemy magic users. He also might not reach level 10 by the time you get you first Guiding Ring in Chapter 8, not to mention that other magic users such as Lugh could also make great use of said promotion item and some might even be at the level necesarry to promote. Guiding Rings are pretty scarce in The Binding Blade (a grand total of 4 without using Secret Shops, two gotten pointlessly late), this means that Saul will need to wait until Chapter 14 to promote. He'll also be outclassed by Clarine and Cecilia in utility thanks to their mounts and Niime and Jodel will usually have higher magic than Saul when they join, making both of them better warp users. Even so Saul will be useful even during the lategame chapters and can still be deployed along side your other magic users, there is no hidden rule about having one unit of each class on your team.
Overall, Saul is a solid unit who'll be available during the hardest parts of The Binding Blade and will usually contribute well during the later chapters as well.
