Roy is the main character of Fire emblem the binding blade. As such, he will be force deployed in every chapter and his death means instant game over.

Roy's not the best of units right off the bat : Lance and Alan both are more durable and have higher mobility. He does have weapon advantage in the early levels, wich can give him the edge he needs to stay relevant. Roy's growths are pretty high for Fe6 standards and he can grow up to be quite potent in the early chapters of the game, especially when using the rapier against "Infantry" foes. In hard mode, he does suffer a lot from his very low durability and may face death quite a few times.

He will however reach a wall after the western isle's. Especially in hard mode, Chapter 13 is a huge change of pace that Roy can't keep up with. He'll likely be lvl 20 or will be soon if you used him a lot, and sadly he won't promote before a long time. The rest of the game, until chapter 22, will be "escort me to the throne!" for Roy.

When promotion finally happen, promotion bonuses and the acquisition of the most potent weapon of Elibe make Roy good again for the rest of the game : he will pretty much be as good as any other in chapter 24, and the mvp of chapter 25.

Also! Don't hoard the rapier. Use it any time you want, you get a new shiny one in a chest, chapter 7.
