Gwendolyn is not what one would call a good unit. While this analysis mainly talks about her Normal Mode performance, note that Gwendolyn is even worse on Hard Mode especially due to not having any hard mode bonuses.
Gwendolyn joins the player's army in Chapter 8 on turn 6 as a level 1 Armored Knight. While she seems like a growth unit with potential, she is held back by many factors that make her considered to be one of the worst units in the game.

Apparently, Gwendolyn was knighted only one day before the events of Chapter 8, and her bases are poor as a result, even in defense. Not only does Gwendolyn do little to no damage to most enemies, but she also gets one-rounded easily by any Fighter with 7 or more AS.
As a level 1 unit, her base stats are miserable. Her combat is lackluster and her durability, despite being a knight, is quite poor with 19 hp and 8 def. Gwendolyn's speed is a standout among her poor bases at a measly 3, making it very hard for her double (which is impossible at base), and highly susceptible to getting doubled by Myrmidons and Pirates and such. Her growths are "okay" at best, with them being around the same as other units who have the same growths but much better bases.

Some claim that Gwendolyn's growths are good and can make her good. While this isn't a very constructive argument since you can't even take advantages of these growths easily if you can't actually survive a round of battle, even then, her growths aren't that good, and definitely not enough to let her catch up to your other, better units, especially with the terrible bases she has. Admittedly, her speed growth of 40% is unusually high for an armor knight, so if you do plan to use Gwendolyn long-term, you will encounter a decent number of speed level-ups. Although her defense growth is nothing worth nothing at 30%. It makes one question wether Gwendolyn really is an Armor Knight or not.
Gwendolyn is locked to lances as well, which may seem like a benefit as her join chapter has other lance wielding enemies such as Soldiers. However, after this Chapter (and Chapter 8x if the player visited their), Gwendolyn will find herself facing a large amount of axe users, putting her consistently in weapon triangle disadvantage. Giving kills to her can be tricky, as she most likely will have to get the killing blow with a slim lance as her hit rates will be too low. Her only 1-2 range option for a while are javelins, which combined with her low skill base, javelin's inaccuracy in The Binding Blade, and weapon triangle disadvantage, can make it a nightmare to hit.

Lastly, on top of all that, even if her stats were better, Gwendolyn is still an Armor Knight, a class with low movement, slowing your entire army down. All in all, Gwendolyn is just pretty bad.
Her class is also a pain to deal with, specifically in having low movement, which is worse for her than other unmounted classes as she is stuck with 4 movement, compared to the normal infantry movement of 5. This causes her to lag behind the army in the Binding Blade's larger than usual maps, forcing the player to use other units to carry Gwendolyn around. She also has to deal with Knight Crest competition, and she most likely will not be getting the first as one of the Cavaliers need it more due to their higher level and investment, so Gwendolyn will have to wait up until Chapter 16's secret shop to even be considered to promote.

However, credit must be given where credit is due. For what it's worth, even with Gwendolyn's growths and bases not correctly complementing each other, she still has terrific promotion bonuses (4 strength, 4 speed, 3 defense) that can actually give her quite a boost, especially if her growths have had some time to kick in (and considering you will mostly give her the second knight's crest you get in the game if you use her, at chapter 15/16, then yes, she theoretically would have levelled up enough if you have been using her frequently), which is honestly something of a redeeming factor. Not only that, but she also has a respectable constitution stat of 10, which actually allows her to pick up the unpromoted cavaliers barring Noah, and even Melady, if for whatever reason you need to rescue them and she happens to be available.
With all this in mind, if the player is extremely determined to use Gwendolyn, she does have her plus sides, even if they are outweighed by her negatives. Like many other promotions in The Binding Blade, her promotion to General is excellent. It's even better than the male's version of promotion to General, as she gains a whopping +4 str, +4 spd, +3 def, and +1 mov, among other stats. Her somewhat average growths means that she should not wait to promote too long, around level 11-12. She also gains axes, which while not that helpful as they have low hit rates and she only gets E rank, they give her weapon triangle advantage towards lance users, and an answer towards axe users. She can also perform the Triangle Attack with her other fellow knights, Bors and Barthe, granting a guaranteed critical hit. Of course, the player will then have to train all three knights, which also takes a high amount of effort along with deployment slots that could be used for better units.

Overall, Gwendolyn, while definitely one of the worst units in the game, is still an interesting one, and a unit that many people (understandably) find fun to use. If one really commits themselves to using Gwendolyn, they will either receive a bad pay-off that they expect at worse, or an amusing killing machine at best, although the latter requires one to shed blood, tears and sweat while there are units out there who are just good from the get-go.
Overall, Gwendolyn is a poor unit who suffers from many shortcomings that she can't make up due to having no real niches. As stated before, it's not impossible to train Gwendolyn, but it should not be expected that she will turn out to be an outstanding combat unit worthy of a deployment slot.
