Claud joins late into Chapter 3, and he comes in handy for the rest of the first generation. Claud's Major Bragi blood permits him to use the Valkyrie staff, which is indispensable as it can bring any units you want back from the dead. Every usage also gives him a full level up, however it must be used in the Home castle. Beyond that, his staff ability means he can support the army very easily, albeit beyond Rescue and Physic his low movement will prove challenging to use for most of the frontline units. While he is objectively capable of combat, his low movement, lack of any combat skills (Follow-Up in particular), and the presence of other capable fighters in the party means he is not best suited for this, and having him avoid combat outside the Arena to avoid the risk of him dying (which means the Valkyrie staff is permanently lost, and all unit deaths from that point on are final). Claud cannot resurrect Sigurd, whose death is an automatic game over, and the Valkyrie staff is of no use for saving the home castle should it come under attack.
Unit performance
His best children, due to his lack of skills, are the two who can use staves. Thus, it is recommended to marry him to Silvia or Erinys so Coirpre or Ced can get access to the Valkyrie staff. While any of them benefit from the enhanced growth rates, only Arthur or Tailtiu otherwise uses primarily magic; the rest do not and do not benefit as much with a magical father like Claud.
Claud is a level 20 High Priest who joins in Chapter 3. He has high magic and resistance, but he is very frail, so he should stay away from combat. While he can use C-rank wind, thunder and fire magic, he is not a combat unit by any means. Thanks to his major Bragi Holy Blood, he has increases HP, magic, luck and resistance growths. Since he joins as a high-level promoted unit, though, he will not make much use of these bonuses. What he can make use of is the other advantage of having major Bragi Holy Blood - Claud has a *-rank in staves. It allows him to use every staff in the game, including the Valkyrie staff he joins with.

Claud is easy to use, as long as he stays away from combat. Since he can use every staff in the game, most of his utility comes from that. His Valkyrie staff lets him resurrect a fallen unit, useful in ironman runs. Having this option allows the player to take more risks, because they can avoid reloading a save. Aside from that, Claud can use any other good staff, including Fortify, Restore, Warp, Physic, etc.

Claud's primary flaw outside of his frailty and lackluster combat is that he is unmounted. This prevents him from keeping up with the mounted frontline, and can make it difficult for him to help. He can sometimes be unable to reach frontline units even with the Physic staff. This is not an issue in Chapter 3, because Claud joins in a location where his low movement is irrelevant. But in Chapters 4 and 5, he struggles. In fact, when Claud joins, his movement is even worse than that of other foot units. Most promoted foot classes have 6 move, while Claud only has 5. He shares his movement value with Arden, to put it into perspective. This means he can even fall behind other foot units - and he will.

Claud can get the player the Rescue staff in the first generation. For that to happen, however, he needs to be paired with Edain. Then, he has a conversation with her in Chapter 5 where he gives her the staff. The player will not find much use in it in that chapter, since Edain is a foot unit and the map is enormous. Besides, the first generation ends when this map does. However, this lets the player pass down the Rescue staff. With that, the player can have faster access to it in the second generation.

Fatherhood
Claud's best pairings by far are the pairings in which his son can inherit and use the Valkyrie staff. His other good pairing is Edain. If Claud is paired with Edain, the player gets the Rescue staff in the first generation, in Chapter 5. As mentioned above, they will not find much use in it there, but Lana can inherit and use it. Normally, the second generation's Rescue staff comes much later. However, with a Claud-fathered Lana, it is available from the start. Lana may be a foot unit, so her rescuing is not as good as it could be on a mounted unit, but it still helps. She can speed up the process of seizing the Chapter 6 castles, since the map involves doubling back. The player can also find other uses for it, like teleporting units out of danger. The pairing is very easy to get - Claud and Edain have the same movement and a similar purpose on the battlefield.

Claud's Valkyrie staff pairings are with Silvia and with Erinys. In both pairings, Claud's children inherit major Bragi Holy Blood. This increases their growth rates in HP, magic, luck and resistance, and gives the sons an *-rank in staves. While Claud does not pass down any skills, none of Ced, Fee, Lene or Coirpre need to inherit skills. They are good enough with their base kit.

The Silvia and Erinys pairings are comparable. The Silvia pairing increases Lene's survivability a little, thanks to the increased growths. Beyond that, it does little for Lene. Coirpre, on the other hand, inherits Claud's staves, and can use every staff in the game from the moment he joins. This is the best possible outcome for him, since otherwise he has no unique utility to speak of. He is an A-rank staff user regardless of his father, but Claud gives him an edge over other staff wielders. The pairing is easy to get, since Silvia and Claud's movement is similar, and Silvia can dance for Claud.

The Erinys pairing improves both children's growths. Fee becomes better at using magic swords, since her magic growth gets much higher. She also gains an A-rank in staves post-promotion instead of a B-rank. This is important, because it means she can use the Rescue and Fortify staves. Since she can fly over obstacles and has high movement, she is an excellent user of both. It is easy to position Fee for a good Fortify, and she can Rescue other units over mountain ranges. This is especially useful in Chapter 9, where the villages are walled off by a mountain range. Ced, on the other hand, becomes an even better unit than he already is. Not only can he fight well, but he can use every staff in the game. Normally, he can only use staves up to B-rank, but with Claud as his father, he has a *-rank. This is a large improvement to Ced's utility and makes him even more useful to have. This pairing is awkward to get, though, since Erinys is a flier with much higher movement than Claud.

Another pairing worth mentioning for Claud is with Tailtiu. It is very easy to get, since Claud joins alongside Tailtiu and reaches the love point threshold fast. It passes down minor Bragi Holy Blood to Arthur and Tine, improving their growths in four areas. With this pairing, they both have a high magic growth. Since they rely on Wrath for combat, they want their magic to be as high as possible. Claud enables that by increasing their growth in that area. However, since Claud does not pass down any skills, both Arthur and Tine will be stuck only with Wrath. If the player wanted their magic growth to be higher, they could pair up Azelle with Tailtiu instead. Fjalar Holy Blood also increases magic growth, and Azelle passes down Follow-Up. Claud does not. Finally, with this pairing, the player loses access to the Valkyrie staff. Neither Arthur nor Tine will have a *-rank in staves. Arthur cannot use staves even post-promotion, and Tine reaches only A-rank post-promotion. While this does allow her to use the Fortify staff and the Rescue staff, it is hardly ever relevant.
