Edain (Japanese: エーディン Adean) is a nun and noblewoman from Grannvale's Yngvi dukedom, a descendant of the Crusader Ullr, the daughter of Lord Ring and the sister of Brigid and Andrey. While the bulk of Grannvale's army was off to war in Isaach, Verdane launched a small-scale invasion, successfully seizing Castle Yngvi and kidnapping Edain, with the kingdom's Prince Munnir taking her back to Verdane. While her childhood friend Sigurd led his few remaining knights into Verdane to rescue her, she was released from their imprisonment by Prince Jamke to travel to meet up with Sigurd's forces, with which she remains throughout Sigurd's troubles with Grannvale until the Battle of Belhalla, which she survived.

Edain is a playable character during the first generation. In Chapter 1, she appears as a player unit next to Marpha castle at the start of turn 2. She is available up until the end of Chapter 5.

Analysis
Love growths and events
analysis
Edain is primarily for utility. She can provide healing, and through some of her events, some very useful teleportation staves. Staves provide a ton of experience in Genealogy, so it is not hard to get her to promotion level provided you have the money to keep repairing staves. As a healer, she cannot make much money on her own and will require payments from Dew. When promoted, she can fight in the arena to raise funds, but due to her lack of horse, it is unlikely she will see combat outside of that unless the player is going at a rather slow pace.

Edain's notable pairing options are Midir, Jamke, Claud, and Azelle. Midir optimizes Lester, at the cost of weakening Lana. This is a worthwhile trade-off as Lester is far more likely to see combat than Lana. The downside is that Midir's superior movement means he will have to stay away from combat for a bit to build love points with Edain. Jamke produces an inferior (but still viable) Lester without having this issue. Either way, this is the way to go for those who wish to make use of Lester.

Claud and Azelle neuter Lester's combat potential, but in return provides much earlier access to Rescue, which is normally inaccessible until close to the game's end. Rescue can make traversing Genealogy's huge maps much faster, and on top of that there's a glitch involving Rescue that allows the player to have infinite turns. Azelle provides the Rescue staff the earliest, but it cannot be inherited. Claud gets Rescue a little later than Azelle, but a Lana fathered by Claud will have a high enough staff rank to inherit the Rescue staff right off the bat, provided that Edain is promoted. Lana's higher staff rank also enables her to spam higher-end staves for fast (but expensive) experience gain.

Analysis
...O lords above... Protect my comrades... in my stead...
analysis
As a unit
Edain joins the army in Chapter 1 of the first generation. Her only weapon rank is a B in staves, so while her base magic is high, she cannot fight until promotion. With a B rank in staves, she can use most staves in the game, such as Warp and Return. After promotion, Edain can use every staff except Valkyrie. Edain's primary issue is her very low movement; she can never keep up with the mounted units dominating Genealogy of the Holy War, which makes it difficult for her to contribute.

By repeatedly using Warp or Return to send a unit to the home castle while at the home castle, Edain can gain experience very quickly, and can reliably reach level 20 by the end of Chapter 2. Edain's promotion gives her a C rank in fire, thunder and wind magic, allowing her to fight; however, she has no skills and cannot use high-rank tomes, making her combat lackluster. Edain's promotion also increases her staff rank to A, but does not increase her movement, so she will continue to fall behind.

Given her low movement, Edain's most significant use is to move units around the map Warp. She will not be able to keep up with cavalry, so she is better off giving Mend to Ethlyn; she can use the Physic staff, but 10-range will likely not be enough later in a chapter, considering how low her movement is. If the player chooses to play slowly, Edain will be able to contribute much more, but in fast playthroughs, her usefulness is extremely limited. As such, it may be best to leave Edain inside the home castle so she can gain experience and have some use by Warping units who enter it.

Battle quotes
As a mother
Andrey... you're so pathetic...
Edain's most notable pairing options are Midir, Jamke, Claud, and Azelle. Midir and Jamke will strengthen Lester at the cost of weakening Lana, while the other two cripple Lester's offense for Lana's magic and staff utility. Midir and Jamke can both pass down bows and Accost to Lester, while Midir passes down Follow-Up and better skill and speed growths and Jamke passes down Adept and better growths in strength, HP, and luck. As Lester will not have Follow-Up without inheriting it or the Follow-Up Ring, Midir will sire a stronger Lester, and as strong as Adept is, it does not stack with the Brave Bow, which will be Lester's main weapon with either pairing. The downside to Midir is that Edain's inferior movement means he will have to stay away from combat to build love points with her; Jamke does not have this problem, as he has much closer movement to Edain.

Claud and Azelle significantly limit Lester's combat potential, but in return provide much earlier access to Rescue, which is otherwise inaccessible until Chapter 10. Rescue can make traversing Genealogys large maps much faster; additionally, there is a glitch involving Rescue that allows a unit to have infinite turns. Azelle provides the Rescue staff in Chapter 4, but it cannot be inherited; Claud provides Rescue in Chapter 5 (which in faster playthroughs can only be obtained by the end of the chapter), but a Lana fathered by Claud will have a high enough staff rank to inherit the Rescue staff. Claud also gives Lana the ability to use Fortify.
