Franz (Japanese: フランツ Franz) is a young knight of Renais who appears in Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. He is in loyal service to Eirika and Ephraim and first appears in the Prologue, though he is not playable until Chapter 1. He is generally quite respectful and modest, and he is the younger brother of Forde, another cavalier.

Role

Franz appears first in the Prologue, where Seth orders him to travel ahead and search for help. He then reappears in Chapter 1 as Eirika and Seth flee to Border Mulan. Soon after they arrive, he and Gilliam, a knight from Frelia, arrive to help them. Afterwards, they both join the army. Franz remains with the group throughout the story.

Analysis

Franz is a Cavalier that joins in Chapter 1 of The Sacred Stones where he will contribute greatly thanks to his class giving him access to 7 move and two weapon types, letting him avoid a weapon triangle disadvantage. He comes with solid bases for his early join time, along with high growths in every area besides defense and resistance. Due to the low quality of enemies in the The Sacred Stones Franz will not have trouble reaching level 10 by the time the player gets the first Knight Crest and is able to promote early. He is by far the best user of the first Knight Crest as Gilliam, Kyle, and Forde will have trouble reaching level 10 as soon as Franz.

Franz's only real problem is the fact that he lacks the flier or staff utility of other units available as early as him. While this does not make him bad, it does mean that he has a harder time standing out from the rest of the pack, especially when Seth is able to do everything Franz can but with much better base performance. Franz also has a poor base luck stat, leaving him susceptible to low-percent crits from most enemies. However, his weaknesses are ultimately negligible and far outweighed by his advantages. Franz will easily pull his weight through the game if used regularly.

Franz's best promotion is without a doubt Paladin, as it gives him 8 movement, a valuable trait with the relatively limited number of units with similarly high movement. The Great Knight does give better speed and strength and access to axes, but has only 6 movement, which removes Franz's greatest asset.

Personality

Franz is a quite modest knight, and is very respectful to others. Most of the time, he is polite and often willing to give advice. He gives Gilliam advice in muscle relaxation and Natasha information about his satchel. This means he is very helpful to others. Also, he likes to fish instead of hunt. Sometimes he can also be slightly nervous to others. As a knight, he is very serious about fighting for Renais. Additionally, he can be quite perceptive; for example, he is able to realize that Forde is only laid back to cheer up the other soldiers and paints to better understand landscapes for battle purposes.

Franz is a knight of Renais like his older brother Forde and others. The two grew up through most of their lives without parents. In Franz's conversations with Seth, it is revealed that the brothers's father was a legendary knight for the Renais soldiers. Even Seth admired him, but this knight was fatally wounded after hunting down an assassin ten years before the War of the Stones. Franz does not remember much about his father besides crying about his absence and he and his brother vying for his attention. He remembers his father's scar on his shoulder quite clearly. His mother died before his father did, and Franz does not seem to remember anything about her. Still, he keeps her comb with him as a protective charm.

Endings

Franz the Faithful
He continued to serve Renais with the same devotion that he had during the War of the Stones. His generous nature and easy smile made him a favorite among the people.

Franz and Amelia
Franz brought Amelia home with him to Renais. Amelia spent a short time in Renais's army, but once she and Franz were married, she retired her commission. The two had a daughter who grew to be a great knight herself.
