Aether (Japanese: 天空 Heavens) is a combat skill which debuted in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. In its first three appearances, it is associated with one or more of the game's Lord characters and, to a lesser extent, with their family - Ike in Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, Ike's father Greil in the former if hacked into the party, and Chrom, Lucina and potentially any of their female children in Awakening. It is traditionally obtained after class changing, as a mastery skill in Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, tied to Ike and Greil's classes, Lord, Hero and Vanguard, and as a class skill learned by Great Lords in Awakening. Aether in Fates is a bonus skill associated with two of its original wielders, Ike and Lucina.
When activated, Aether deals two consecutive blows to the enemy. The first blow has the effect of the Sol skill, draining HP from the target into the user, and the second has that of Luna, bypassing the target's defensive stats. As with the two base skills themselves, the specific effects of Aether vary somewhat beyond this from game to game.

This article or section is a short summary of Aether. SmashWiki features a more in-depth article. |
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, Aether is Ike's up special move. Its appearance is modified from its Fire Emblem appearances in that it entails only a single strike, omitting the second upward slash, and none of the added effects from Fire Emblem apply. Additionally, Ike's Final Smash is Great Aether, characterized as a significantly more powerful variation of Aether and possibly inspired by Ike's final strike against Ashera in Radiant Dawn.
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U introduced character customization, including alternate variations on each character's special moves. Like all special moves in the two games, Aether has two variations, which are found at random and collected during the course of the game's other modes.
- Aether Drive (Japanese: 進天空 Advancing Heavens) alters Ike's trajectory to give him more horizontal distance, flinging Ragnell upwards diagonally and following it in that direction.
- Aether Wave (Japanese: 天空波 Heavens Wave) is less powerful, but flings a long-distance shock wave upon landing.
Trivia
- It is possible that Ike's Aether animations in Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, which entail throwing his weapon in the air and catching it mid-jump to strike, is a reference to the Mercenary's critical hit animation in the Game Boy Advance games; Ike's base Ranger class is a Mercenary in all but name, and in Radiant Dawn he is the Mercenary's traditional advanced class.
