Nino and Jaffar have successfully infiltrated Zephiel's manse and are just outside of the door to the prince's room. Before they enter, Jaffar warns Nino that if she fails he will finish the mission and kill her. Nino is clearly shaken by Jaffar's cold reminder, but tries to act calmly by responding that she already knew the stakes since she is a member of the Black Fang. As they approach Zephiel’s room, Nino ensures no guards are nearby as King Desmond promised. In the silence of the empty halls, the two hear Zephiel talking to himself. Zephiel is praying to finally be able to meet his father's lofty expectations and for his and Guinivere's family to live together in the royal palace in happiness. Just as he finishes his prayers, Jaffar silently breaks into the room and incapacitates Zephiel without a word. Jaffar then tells Nino to come and finish the prince off; however, Zephiel’s words ring in her mind and weigh on her conscience, leaving her unable to complete her mission. She too has wanted nothing but the affection and approval of her distant mother and cannot bear to kill Zephiel. Jaffar tersely reminds Nino of his earlier warning, but Nino does not waver; she, in fact, invites Jaffar to do what he must so he does not receive the Fang’s judgment. Jaffar suddenly tells Nino that they are leaving and Jaffar attempts to flee the manse with Nino in tow; however, soon after, Ursula and Maxime appear to halt their escape. Sonia, anticipating the possibility of Jaffar’s betrayal, sent Ursula and some Black Fang soldiers to ensure that Jaffar completes the mission exactly as she instructed. When Ursula notices that Nino is still alive, she immediately understands that Jaffar has failed. Ursula demands to know if Jaffar truly intends to betray the Black Fang and Nergal. Jaffar simply responds that he intends to protect Nino at all costs, thus, making her enemies his as well. Ursula then orders for the lights around the manse to be put out and for the heads of the traitors as well as the prince. In the brief time they have while the Black Fang prepares for the battle, Jaffar tells Nino to flee the battlefield while he holds off the reinforcements, and runs off before Nino can protest. Just then, Eliwood, Hector, and Lyn arrive to the sounds of an ongoing battle. The Lords assume that they still have time to save the prince’s life and join the battle.

Over the course of the battle, Eliwood/Hector reaches Nino. When she first sees the lord, she begs them to save Zephiel as soon as possible, mistaking them for the manse’s attendants. The lord recognizes Nino and explains to her that the Black Fang has become nothing more than a pawn for Nergal and that she should join their group for her and the prince’s good. Nino is rendered speechless by the the lord’s words but, nonetheless, joins their company. If Nino manages to talk to Jaffar before the chapter ends, she will beg him to join her in Eliwood’s company. Jaffar refuses and reiterates that Nino should run. Nino continues to press Jaffar, prompting him to tell Nino to forget about him as his is not a life worth saving. Nino refuses to leave without Jaffar and continues to find alongside him.

After the map objective is cleared, the lights in the manse are relit. Zephiel is briefly surprised to see the mysterious heroes who protected him from the Black Fang have disappeared before he leaves to check on his mother. Outside the manse, Jaffar is with the Lycian lords confused as to why they have yet to kill him. Lyn responds that he did not take the prince’s life so they will not take his. Jaffar criticizes Lyn’s thinking as naive, prompting Hector to threaten to kill him. Nino stands between Hector and Jaffar and begs for Hector to show mercy. Hector relents, admitting that it would be a waste to dispatch of a potential ally in their fight against Nergal. Meanwhile, Limstella has found Ursula’s corpse and takes her quintessence for her master.

The following morning, Eliwood, Lyn, and Hector report to Hellene. They try to inform her of the assassination attempt, though she brushes it off and insists that they give her the Fire Emblem immediately.  Hellene is about to inform the group as to how to reach the Shrine of Seals before Eliwood suddenly asks the queen what Zephiel is to her highness: her trueborn son or a tool for securing the throne? Hellene takes offense to Eliwood’s line of inquiry but he has no interest in her answer. Disgusted with the politics of Bern, Eliwood takes his leave of the queen alongside Hector and Lyn. Outside, Eliwood regrets angering the queen, though the others pay it little mind and begin to consider their other options when, suddenly, Queen Hellene approaches them, unattended by her guards. Hellene gives the group a book detailing the road to the Shrine of Seals as well as a Heaven Seal. Eliwood is confused by Hellene’s kindness considering what he had just said to her; however, Hellene considers her gift more so as an expression of gratitude for saving her son than for the recovery of the Fire Emblem. When Hellene returns to the manse, she immediately apologizes to Zephiel for being a poor mother and even tells her son that she wants the royal family to live together in happiness. Hellene acknowledges that Desmond may never forgive her discourteous behavior but, nonetheless, promises to make an honest attempt as she now only wishes for her son’s happiness.
