His strength primarily revolves around one stat in particular - FCM of 5. Fergus's high FCM means that he will be a damaging behemoth who is almost always guaranteed to crit his opponent when he double attacks - especially if he is wielding a killing edge. Additionally, free knights and rangers have some of the lowest dismounting penalties in the game due to their restriction to swords, which will allow Fergus to retain his strengths regardless of whether or not he is fighting indoors. Towards the end of the game the player may acquire the Beo's Sword - a powerful personal weapon which can only be wielded by either Fergus or Diarmuid and grants its wielder Vantage and Wrath with up to 60 uses. If you wish to make him even more powerful, you can even give Fergus the Sol manual that you may have acquired in chapter 17A in order to further increase his potency.

Despite Fergus's obvious prowess, he does carry some minor weaknesses. Fergus may have trouble double attacking enemies with a low speed growth of 35% - having him constantly wield the Ced Scroll is recommended purely for this reason. He is also very susceptible to enemy magic users due to a severely lacking magic stat - with both 0 at base compounded by a 10% growth rate. Fergus may still be able to survive longer than most units against magic due to his high HP stat but you should not expect him to survive more than two shots from siege tome users. Another flaw Fergus has would be that he needs to rely on magic swords in order to attack at range but, because the magic stat functions both defensively and offensively in Thracia 776, Fergus will do very little damage when doing so. Overall, Fergus's flaws are redeemable when compared to his strengths but players should be aware of them when fielding him.
Despite Fergus's obvious prowess, he does carry some weaknesses. Fergus may have trouble double attacking enemies due to his rather low speed growth of 35%, and because of his very high FCM, he loses most of his offensive power if he doesn't double: he has a constitution of 8, so anything heavier than a Short Sword weighs him down at base, and using a Steel Sword or a Long Sword when he joins is a bad option because he will lose half of his base speed of 7, which prevents him from doubling or greatly hinders him in that regard while also worsening his ability to dodge. Having him constantly wield the Ced Scroll when he levels up is recommended purely for this reason. He is also very susceptible to enemy magic users due to a severely lacking magic stat - with both 0 at base compounded by a 10% growth rate. When he joins, he can make good use of the Flame Sword that Eyvel has at the beginning of the game if Leif or Lifis had it during the transition to Chapter 4, since his weapon experience in swords isn't too far from a B rank, which is required to use it, although Leif may also use it for this purpose. Overall, Fergus's flaws are redeemable when compared to his strengths but players should be aware of them when fielding him.

Fergus will be an incredible asset to your army who can remain relevant at all stages of the game.
