— Leif to August
|
The Baron in Black (Japanese: 黒衣の男爵 The Black-Clad Baron) is the twenty-fourth chapter of Fire Emblem: Thracia 776. In order to play the sidequest after, the player must obtain the Kia Staff in this chapter and Sara must have been recruited, uncaptured, and alive.
Plot
- Main article: The Baron in Black/Script
Leif's forces enter the wing of Castle Munster where Raydrik's last soldiers are. In the meantime, Veld consults the situation with Raydrik and tells him he is going to abandon him for his failures. Raydrik begs Veld not to leave him; in response, Veld gives Raydrik a battalion of sorcerers from the Welkenrosen out of pity before he leaves.
Leif and Ced, Saias, or August (depending on who was recruited) discuss the circumstances of the battle. If Galzus was not defeated in Chapter 5 or 6, Raydrik's remaining forces include him, and he is a dangerous mercenary, difficult to fight directly. Ced suggests fighting him alone with his Forseti tome, August suggests ganging up on him with a group of soldiers, while Saias suggests having Mareeta talk to him, as he knows that Mareeta and Galzus are family. Regardless of the suggestions, Leif wonders why August insisted on splitting up their forces into three groups, to which August replies that they have three objectives. The first objective is to take down Raydrik, the second to save the child hostages, and the third to take down the Loptian bishops who wield Berserk and Sleep staves.
The battle then begins. If Mareeta talks to Galzus, she remembers he is her father, and he joins her after asking if Eyvel was her guardian. He wants to save Eyvel in order to repay the debt he owes her for taking care of Mareeta while he was not. Regardless if Galzus is recruited or not, Raydrik dies during the battle, and Leif's forces successfully take the last wing of Castle Munster.
During the battle, Leif's forces may obtain the Kia staff. If Sara is alive and has been recruited, then after the battle, when Leif and August discuss the possibility of saving Eyvel, Sara speaks up and claims that she can use the staff. During the brief conversation that ensues, Leif is flabbergasted to find out that Sara is Manfroy's granddaughter, but she assures him she never liked her grandfather and urges Leif to hurry and save Eyvel. If Sara is not present, then Leif laments his forces' inability to save Eyvel despite having the staff in their possession.
No matter if Leif obtains the Kia staff or not, after the battle, he and August agree that they must attack the secret temple of the Loptian Order underneath the castle, because that is where Veld has retreated to. August declares that Veld was the person who turned Eyvel to stone, and that he is responsible for both the child hunts in the area and the actions of the Welkenrosen. Storming the temple will be difficult, because Veld is protected by a group of Loptian sorcerers, but if Leif's forces do not attack, Veld might slip away before Seliph's army arrives.
If Leif obtained the Kia staff and Sara is available to use it, he and his forces go to save Eyvel first. If Leif has not obtained the Kia staff or Sara is not available to use it, then he and his forces move straight to the Loptian temple assault.
Beginning log
After securing the city, Leif faced his final obstacle. Towering before him stood Castle Munster, the "Palace of Evil." Though in the past having to escape from this ominous castle, Leif now stood ready to breach its walls. To reclaim a long-lost treasure...and to cut open the path for a new age...

Units are arranged based on their position in deployment order after Leif. If Saias or Ced were recruited, they appear in a fixed position above Leif.
The center-north door cannot be opened like a standard door. Instead, it can only be opened by one of the Civilians; which one can open it is determined randomly from the four boys on turn 5.
Character data
If they were recruited, Saias or Ced are not available in the preparations menu, and their inventory cannot be managed from preparations. They will join the battle on turn 1.

Strategy
This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.
|
The player's army is split into three groups for the chapter:
- The middle group must defeat Raydrik and seize the throne
- The left group can protect the 8 NPC units and obtain the Kia Staff
- The right group can neutralize the group of Dark Mages in the bottom-right room
The middle group needs 1 Door Key. Galzus can only be recruited by the middle group, and only by Mareeta; if Mareeta was assigned to either the left or right groups, she will need to be warped or rescued to the middle squad to recruit Galzus. If Galzus is not recruited, he is dangerous to engage in combat – even with Ced and Forseti; he is best incapacitated with a Sleep staff. The Bragi Sword – which Leif can use – is incredibly useful for defeating Raydrik, as it deals bonus damage to him and negates the attack-halving effect of his Loptr Sword. Alternatively, a unit with the Steal command can use it to forcibly give Raydrik a 2-range weapon, as to force him to unequip his Loptr Sword and become vulnerable to attack by leaving a unit for him to attack at 2-range. With brave weapons, Mareeta and Galzus can also power through by proccing Astra then getting Luna-criticals to break through Raydrik's defense with raw damage. The unarmed Bishops can be easily captured for staves.
The left group needs at least 3 Door Keys, ideally carried by different units as to ensure they can engage the enemies there as soon as possible to protect the NPC units. The enemies prioritize capturing NPCs, but if they cannot reach a tile adjacent to an NPC to capture one, they will instead attack at 2-range and kill them, so it is important to ensure that NPC units are somewhat spaced out and to kill any enemy holding an NPC as soon as possible. Once the Kia Staff room is open, two units from this group can block the staircases to stop reinforcements from appearing.
The door in the upper center of the map that leads to the room with the Kia Staff chest cannot be opened through conventional means. In order to open it, one of the child NPCs must be able to reach the door, after which they will open it on their turn in a short cut-scene. The NPC who is assigned to do this is randomly determined at the start of the map, and for this reason it is imperative to save every NPC, since there is no as there is no way to distinguish which NPC is required. The NPC required to open the door will always be a boy however, and not a girl. The NPCs have very low movement, so it will take very long for them to reach the door by themselves, provided that the way ahead is clear of threats.
The right group can neutralize the Dark Mage congregation and should have some free inventory slots if able. However, a few of the Dark Mages are so dangerous that they are best put to sleep or silenced on turn 1 – specifically, the Dark Mages with Sleep, Silence, Berserk, and Restore, as well as the Dark Mage with Fenrir. The Mercenaries with status swords can be lured away with a decently fast unit and their conditioned restored; the reinforcements from the right 2-wide hallway can be prevented from appearing by occupying the tiles they appear from. No other threat exists apart from the enemy with Hel, who is incapable of killing anyone with more than 1 HP, meaning that the right squad can safely spend the rest of their time capturing the Dark Mages and taking their useful staves so long as the right hallway is blocked to stop reinforcements.
Trivia
- This chapter holds the only secret shop in the entirety of Thracia 776.
