Concept artwork of a griffin from The Art of Fire Emblem Awakening.

The griffin or griffon (Japanese: グリフォン griffon) is a species of winged beast in the Fire Emblem series. A hybrid animal combining body parts from both birds and beasts, it is used as a flying mount for combat. Griffons were introduced in Fire Emblem Awakening, and appear in it and Engage.

In terms of series history, the griffin is a new creature that has little established lore. So far, the griffin only appears in Awakening and Engage, used by a single class. No characters start in the Griffin Knight class, causing fewer details to be known about this species in comparison to pegasi and wyverns.

Characteristics

Physical appearance

Griffins in the Fire Emblem series follow their traditional mythological counterparts closely. Through the front of a hawk and the rear of a lion they posses talons and a beak. Griffins seem to come in two colors, with the most common color being brown. Risen Griffon Riders appear riding a less common black griffin. They make an airy screeching sound when in combat.

Judging by the stats of the Griffon Rider class, griffins are apparently faster than wyverns.

Griffin-mounted classes

Only a single class so far has used this mount in the entire Fire Emblem series.
