The Dark Mage (ダークマージ, Daaku Maaji) class is a magic-using class that first appears in Monshou no Nazo, in which it uses tomes and staves. In the games in which dark mages appear, they use various types of magic. In Seisen no Keifu, they use dark magic and staves; then, in Thracia 776, they also gain the ability to use fire, thunder, and wind magic. Finally, after a long absence, they appear again in Shadow Dragon and Shin Monshou no Nazo, using only tomes.

Dark mages are a quite useful class, although in most games they are an enemy-only class. They are able to use a large variety of magic in Thracia 776, although in other games they can only use magic and staves. In the last two games they appear in, they are actually quite weak, with low base stats. They are resistant to magic, but weak against physical attacks.

In Seisen no Keifu, the Dark Bishop class is a stronger version of the Dark Mage class. Next, in Thracia 776, the Dark Mage class is a promoted class; characters of the Loputo Mage class promote to the Dark Mage class. Later, in Shadow Dragon and Shin Monshou no Nazo, playable dark mages can become sorcerers.

In Shadow Dragon and Shin Monshou no Nazo, they are usually enemy-only; however, it is possible for a character to reclass to the Dark Mage class. Additionally, a replacement character can be of the Dark Mage class.
