The Axe Knight (アクスナイト, Akusu Naito, or 斧騎士, Onokishi, meaning "axe knight") class is a class of axe-wielding soldiers on horseback. They first appear in Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, in which while there is the Social Knight class, the Axe Knight class still is present as an alternative horse-riding class. In Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, they can dismount and use swords to enter buildings and travel certain terrain. They were absent in the GBA games, but return in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, in which the Cavalier class is divided into the Sword Knight, Lance Knight, Bow Knight, and Axe Knight class. This is the same in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn.

Axe knights generally have quite good stats in most categories. They have high movement, since they are on horseback, and they can be useful in rescuing units. After certain actions, they can move again, which is in the form of the Canto skill in Radiant Dawn. They have quite useful stats, except for magic (which is unnecessary) and resistance, which makes them vulnerable to magic-using enemies. Still, axe knights are quite useful all around.

In Seisen no Keifu and Thracia 776, axe knights change class to the Great Knight class. In Path of Radiance, they change class to the Paladin class. Most recently, in Radiant Dawn, axe knights become axe paladins, and they can then become gold knights.
