The Sage (賢者 or けんじゃ, Kenja) class is an advanced magic-wielding class which debuted in Fire Emblem Gaiden as the promoted form of mages, eventually permanently replacing bishops in that role. They generally use several types of magic, almost always oriented toward anima magic and its three subtypes, which vary greatly in different games. Usually they use the same magic types as the mages from which they promote, sometimes with the addition of another magic type, and almost always with the addition of staves.

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn split the sage class into three variants, each specializing in one of the three anima magic types: the Fire Sage, Wind Sage and Thunder Sage. In the same game, there are also two character-specific variants, the Light Sage and Dark Sage, exclusive to Micaiah and Pelleas respectively.

Sages can attack from one or two spaces away, and farther away with high-level magic such as Bolting. However, they usually have below-average defense, which makes them quite vulnerable to physical attackers. However, most physical units, besides others with high resistance such as pegasus knights or falcoknights, have low resistance, making them vulnerable to magic. Usually, sages should be positioned directly behind physical units to protect them from attacks, but they should still be close so they can attack on the player's turn.
