Janaff, a hawk laguz.

Laguz are a race of half-human and half-beast beings, which appear in Template:FEPR and Template:FERD. Referred to as the "children of strength", they have the ability to temporarily focus their energies and transform into an animal, making the most of their physical strength. There are three main tribes of laguz: dragon, bird and beast. Their relationship with the beorc has been strained over the years, as many beorc treat them as lesser beings, calling them "sub-humans". On rare occasions, beorc and laguz interbreed, creating the Branded. Laguz are used for slave labor, and kept as pets by some beorc.

Like the beorc, they are descended from the zunanma.

Characteristics

General

Laguz keep some features of their beast forms when in 'human' form. For instance, beast laguz keep their feline ears and tails. Bird tribe laguz keep their wings, and ability of flight in their 'human' forms. The exceptions to this are dragon laguz, they do not have any features from their dragon forms. Though some seem to have markings on them that signify their draconic heritage.

Beast laguz are infamous for their huge appetites. All tribes are renowned for their strength, with the exception of Heron laguz who are well known for their pacifism and singing.

All laguz live longer than beorc. The dragon laguz are by far the most long lived, with the dragon king Deghinsea being well over one-thousand years old, being an adult and participating in the war against the dark god. Bird tribe laguz seem to live somewhere into their hundreds[1]. Lehran, a heron laguz, is at around two-thousand or so, being present for the first conflict with Yune, and also present for Ashunera's awakening in the epilogue in Radiant Dawn, which takes place one-thousand-two-hundred years afterwards[2]. The lifespans of the other tribes are unspecified.

Dragon laguz, like their manakete counterparts in other games in the series, also have difficulty reproducing. With Ena and Rajaion's child being the first dragon laguz birth in centuries[3].

Laguz Tribes

As mentioned, the Laguz fall into many tribes, depending on what they descend from and their beast forms. The dragon tribe can be further split into three more groups. red dragons, white dragons, and the most powerful dragons belonging to the royal family, black dragons.

While there are few examples, breeding between the different dragon 'sub-tribes' results in a dragon laguz that looks like both. For instance, Ena is the child of a white and a red dragon, Ena herself is classified as a red dragon, though is closer to pink in color.

The bird tribe also has several 'sub-tribes'. There are the herons, ravens, and hawks. Unlike the dragons, each bird tribe has their own nation. Though, at the end of Radiant Dawn they become one combined country[4]. Herons are very fragile, and unlike most other laguz lack physical strength the race is known for. Also, only the royal family possess pure white wings, for example, Lehran possesses black wings. The hawk laguz are the most physically strong of the bird tribes, while the ravens instead possess great speed.

The beast laguz also encompass a large variety of forms under the label. There are the weaker, yet faster cat laguz. There are also the tiger laguz, who are in the middle, stronger than the cats but weaker than lions. The lion laguz are the strongest of the beast tribe.

There is also another laguz type, the wolf laguz. This laguz variety was not known to exist until Radiant Dawn as they lived away from other civilizations within the Hatari desert.
