Appearance(s)

I still have to become much, much better. I have a debt of gratitude with Prince Marth, and I have to repay it by taking down enemy after enemy.
— Tomas, to Kris

Tomas (Japanese: トーマス Thormas) is a knight of the Holy Kingdom of Archanea. He was one of the retinue of knights who assisted in Princess Nyna's doomed escape attempt from Pales at the onset of the War of Shadows, and was captured and imprisoned for the rest of the war, until Nyna returned with Marth's forces to reclaim Pales.

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light

Role

Tomas was imprisoned with Boah, Midia, Macellan, and Dolph, in a cell in Pales under the occupation of Volzhin and the forces of Dolhr. During Marth's assault on the palace and its Dolhr occupation, Tomas and the other prisoners were freed and joined Marth's army.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Tomas joins in chapter 12 as a level 8 archer, and he joins with abysmal stats. If you have trained up and consistently used Gordin by this point in the game he will likely have surpassed Tomas, and Jeorge, who joins 3 chapters earlier as a sniper, also has mostly better stats, and Tomas's growth rates aren't particularly stronger than those two units. Thankfully, Tomas is only 2 levels away from a promotion to sniper, and the Orion's Bolt required to promote archers is acquired in the same chapter Tomas joins. If you can grind Tomas for a couple of levels, he quickly is able to reach about the same level as Jeorge. Of course, since Tomas has the worst availability of these three archers, if you have used Jeorge up until that point he will still surpass Tomas even if Tomas promotes. Also, archers in Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light are generally not good enough to justify using multiple snipers over stronger potential units, and if you want to use a bow unit, the horseman Wolf as well as Jeorge are better in almost every way and both join earlier than Tomas. If you have lost some of your stronger units, Tomas can be used as a replacement unit, but otherwise it is hard to justify using him over other stronger units.

Fire Emblem: Archanea Saga

Role

When the army of Dolhr came to lay siege to Pales at the onset of the War of Shadows, Tomas was part of the band of knights convened by Boah to lead Princess Nyna to safety. The group was instead cornered by Dolhr's forces and was forced to try and fight its way out. In the end, they were defeated and captured upon the arrival of Camus, and were imprisoned in the palace, where they remained for three years until Marth arrived with Nyna.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Tomas joins in Chapter 12 of Shadow Dragon as a level 8 Archer with a base C rank in bows, which allows him to use the Killer Bow at base. He is available much later than Gordin and Castor, and he joins unpromoted, unlike Jeorge. His base stats are all unimpressive; in higher difficulties, he gets doubled and one-rounded by most enemies, making it difficult to engage in combat with him.

Tomas's stats will be better than Gordin's and Jeorge's on average in the long term, but training him does not have significant returns; he cannot counter enemies at 1-range and struggles to gain experience in higher difficulties. Tomas requires only two levels to reach level 10 and promote, but many units compete for the Master Seal and many better options for promotion exist.

Reclassing is not very beneficial for Tomas, since his personal bases are all quite low, and he cannot take advantage of his C bow rank as any class without access to bows. It is best to keep him as an Archer before promotion; after promotion, Sniper has C bows, and can use the Longbow.

Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem

Role

When Marth's army travelled to Gra after recovering Altea, Tomas was there residing in a village. He offered his services to Marth, joining his army.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Tomas is a very impressive unit, not because of his usefulness, but because of the fact that he joins fairly late into the game he somehow comes with a worse bow rank and worse bases than Jeorge who joined far earlier. As such Tomas has practically nothing to offer aside form his useful weapons, which can be crucial in dealing damage to the enemy wyverns in his joining chapter and he can even OHKO them in some lower difficulties, his growths are overall fantastic, but they don't make up for his awful bases. You will likely find a far more useful sniper in Jeorge, Gordin and Ryan as well and any reclassed character to sniper as Tomas is easily outclassed in most important areas by most characters.

Personality

Tomas' personality receives almost no exploration in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light and its remakes and sequels. However, his death quotes imply he is strongly loyal to Princess Nyna. Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem gives slightly more insight into his character; he has a strong enough sense of justice to desert Hardin when he becomes a tyrant, he enjoys archery, and he is somewhat childish.

English

Tomas

Scandinavian/eastern European variant of "Thomas", from the Aramaic תָּאוֹמָא, Ta'oma, "twin". [1] Unlike Dolph (whose Japanese name is Tomth), whose name may share this origin, it does not carry any specific meaning for Tomas, unless one sees it as poking fun at the fact that originally, Tomas used the exact same portrait as Gordin.
