Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Runan joins in the first chapter and is available for all chapters on his side of the route splits. His base stats are mediocre apart from speed, and his growth rates are only slightly above average by TearRing Saga standards, but he can immediately contribute by using his Rapier to deal with armored and cavalry units. Due to his excellent availability he has plenty of opportunity to increase his offensive stats and start holding his own in direct combat, though his durability won’t be fantastic due to his shaky defense and low magic.

Runan will begin falling off in the mid game due to his unremarkable growth rates, a swath of powerful and useful new recruits, and the increasing prevalence of extremely tanky enemies, many of whom make use of shields to boost their defense. Additionally most units will begin promoting, leaving him behind in both fighting prowess and movement alike, as Runan is unable to promote normally. In return however, he does have an extra ten levels to take advantage of which can allow him to learn some of his decent skill set, though his only significant combat skill is Draco.

To counteract his middling growths, consider supplying him with specialized swords. The Levin Sword, available for purchase in the first secret shop in Chapter 9, can give him a ranged attack that bypasses common enemy shields using his (relatively) respectable 15% magic growth. Other options include an Armorslayer to increase damage in place of his rapier should it be broken, or Mainstar☆ to deal super-effective damage against summoned monsters while keeping his HP safe.

However, after his fairly late promotion after chapter 26, Runan gains significant boosts to his stats, massively increasing his combat potential and making it much safer to have him as a frontline combat unit, in addition to team support with his skill Charisma. Late in the game, Runan obtains his second personal weapon, the powerful Varunastra, which has infinite durability, high might, negates dragon scales, and halves breath damage taken, allowing Runan to easily take on the many lategame Necrodragons, as well as the final boss Gerxel.

Overall, Runan is a decent combat unit who can contribute throughout most of the game. There is no point to not training him as he is required to defeat the final boss.
