Robin (pronounced /ˈrɑbɪn/[key][1]; Japanese: ルフレ Reflet) is an avatar playable character in Fire Emblem Awakening who acts as a secondary protagonist to the game. Created by the player at the beginning of a save file, Robin is a close friend and ally to Prince Chrom of Ylisse who acts as the tactician for his militia, the Shepherds.
Robin is also one of the playable characters representing the Fire Emblem series in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U and in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Biography
Origins

Robin was born as the child of Validar of the Grimleal and an unknown woman, possibly a member of the Grimleal. Their birth marked the culmination of centuries of work by the Grimleal to breed a worthy human host with whom to revive their god, the fell dragon Grima; as a result, Robin bore Grima's Brand on their right hand. However, their mother was overcome by fear about the prospect and fled the Grimleal, taking Robin with her. The two disappeared, the Grimleal lost track of them and nothing of their life between them and Robin's meeting with Chrom is known.[2]
Meeting
An uncertain number of years later, Robin was found lying in a field by Chrom, Lissa and Frederick. Devoid of all memories save for Chrom's name, Frederick instantly suspected them of being an assassin, and so Chrom resolved to take them into town to confirm the truth and to let them go should they not be an enemy. However, they were interrupted by an attack on Southtown by Plegian bandits, whereupon Robin assisted the three in ridding the town of the bandits, proving to be adept both in combat and at strategy. At the end of the battle, Chrom was convinced of Robin's good intentions and invited them to join the Shepherds and assist them in protecting Ylisse.
Immediately after, Chrom and Robin set out to return to Ylisse in order to report on the Plegian's aggressive behavior. Their route forced them to camp for the night on the way, which was interrupted by the sudden first appearance of Risen. Chrom, Robin and the Shepherds fought off the Risen with the assistence of a mysterious masked warrior who identified themselves only as "Marth". The following morning, they made it to the capital of Ylisse, Ylisstol, and delivered their report, after which they set out to Ferox to request military aid to protect against the Plegian threat. Once in Ferox, they secured the support of Flavia by winning the khan tournament in Arena Ferox on her behalf, prevailing over a unit of warriors led by "Marth", the chosen representative of the West-Khan Basilio.
War with Plegia

Plegia's King Gangrel declared war on Ylisse after attacking a border village, and so Robin worked with Chrom as the lead tactician for the Ylissean response. With the assistance of "Marth", inadvertently revealed to be a woman, Robin and the Shepherds stopped an attempted assassination of Emmeryn late at night in Ylisstol's halls. Afterward they chose to relocate Emmeryn to safety in her eastern palace, but after repelling a Plegian attack Emmeryn returned to Ylisstol, despite Chrom, Robin and Phila's protests. The Shepherds continued north to Ferox to prepare for an invasion into Plegia, but soon received word of Ylisstol's fall and the kidnapping of Emmeryn.
Robin took charge of planning the Ylisse/Ferox strategy for rescuing Emmeryn, and accompanied the army into Plegia. Engaging the Plegian army in battle outside their castle at the eleventh hour before Emmeryn was to be executed, Robin had Flavia kill the executioner with a thrown axe while Phila flew in to rescue her, but the plan failed at the last moment with the appearane of Risen who wiped out Phila and her unit, foiling Robin's plan and leaving the army surrounded. In a bid to prevent the Fire Emblem being taken by Gangrel, Emmeryn killed herself, and Chrom's army reluctantly escaped in the confusion. After a brief period to regroup and mourn, Chrom and Robin defeated Gangrel and the Plegian army in a final skirmish, ending the war.
The Valm crisis
Robin remained as Chrom's closest confidante for the next two years, devoting themselves to healing Ylisse's war wounds using gold taken from Plegia at the war's end. This era of peace was shattered with news from Ferox, announcing that the western continent of Valm had declared war on the Ylissean continent. Robin and Chrom travelled to Plegia's western coast with the Shepherds to repel an invasion force sent by Valm, then on Basilio and Flavia's advice they arranged a summit with Plegia to negotiate the use of their warships, as neither Ferox nor Ylisse had any of their own.
Robin accompanied Chrom and company to the Carrion Isle, off Plegia's west coast, to meet with the new Plegian king: Validar. To their surprise, Validar granted them a fleet of warships and other transport as well as the funds for the entire war, albeit with no soldiers. Validar also introduced them to a mysterious Plegian hierophant, identical to Robin in every way. On their way out, Validar attempted to sway Robin to his side, revealing that he was in fact Robin's father. During this meeting, Grima attempted a psychic attack to gain control of Robin. When this failed, a horde of Risen descended upon Chrom's group, and after a prolonged battle against them, "Marth" reappeared to defend Chrom and inadvertently revealed herself as Chrom's daughter, Lucina. After meeting Robin and her mother, Lucina joined Chrom's army for the Valm war.
The Ylisse/Feroxi joint forces soon set out for Valm by sea, but were met with a Valmese navy equally as vast. In response, Robin devised a strategy to clear the way to Valm: board their command ship and eliminate their general, then sacrifice most of their own ships to use as flaming missiles, wiping out the Valmese army. Upon reaching the Valmese shore, they met with the resistance leader Say'ri and lent their power to her cause, then set out with her to consult with Tiki, the voice of the divine dragon Naga. Tiki warned them of the impending resurrection of Grima and counselled Chrom to reunite the Fire Emblem with its five gemstones in order to properly fight Grima, giving them one of the stones she had been safeguarding.
Their next victory was to capture the central Fort Steiger, a major Valmese staging post, during which the Valmese resistance fell apart upon the coercion of the Valmese tactician Excellus. Despite their victory, they were quickly surrounded by the former resistance, forcing Chrom and Robin to retreat with most of their force while Basilio and Flavia held them off as best they could. Thanks to Robin's plan to use an active volcano as a staging point, they nonetheless soon defeated the general Yen'fay and half the Valmese force, only to learn of Basilio's death in action while holding off Walhart. Pressing on, they led an assault on the Valmese capital and twice defeated its emperor, Walhart the Conqueror, bringing the war with Valm to a close. By the end of the war, they had gathered four of the Emblem's five gemstones.
The Fell Dragon
Soon after the war, Chrom and Robin received a message from Plegia, revealing their possession of the fifth gemstone and an invitation to come collect it. Obvious as the trap was, Robin was wary of having the Emblem on hand during it, but Chrom insisted on taking it anyway and ensured their entire army was heavily armed in case. At the Plegian capital, Validar instantly turned on them, revealed his knowledge of Lucina's aberrant time-travel origin, and insisted they surrender the Emblem, leading Chrom and Robin to lead an escape from the capital; before they could completely leave, Validar took control of Robin and forced them to steal the Emblem from Chrom and hand it over.
Chrom's group soon learned of a mysterious gathering of Plegian citizens at the Dragon's Table and travelled there to investigate. There, they were met by Aversa and the twelve Deadlords, and learned of an impending rite to resurrect Grima occurring there. They fought their way into the Table itself, where Chrom and Robin personally took on Validar. Fearing they would fall victim to Grima's mind control yet again, Robin convinced a reluctant Chrom to strike them down should they show any sign of turning. Validar revealed to them Robin's origins and true purpose as Grima's host. Although they initially succeeded at defeating Validar, as foreseen in a vision Robin had, Grima took control of Robin and forced them to kill Chrom. However, this gambit was foiled by the re-emergence of Basilio, who told a confused Validar of how Robin had foreseen all of this and ensured, thanks to Basilio, that Validar received a useless Emblem with fake gemstones. Chrom stood up and revealed himself to not be dead either, noting that Robin had managed to weaken their magic to nonlethal levels to fool Validar and Grima.
With the tables turned in their favor, Chrom and Robin engaged Validar in a second battle, now with Basilio and Flavia's assistance. This time they successfully killed Validar, only to be met by the reappearance of the doppelganger hierophant. The hierophant revealed their true identity: they were Robin from Lucina's alternate future, now the human host of the Grima of that timeline. Draining the life force of Plegia's assembled citizens, Grima resurrected the Grima of the current timeline. Although they initially seemed to have lost, Robin revealed they had taken the Fire Emblem back during the confusion, and with it the group headed for Mount Prism to prepare to defeat Grima. There, after a skirmish with Risen, Chrom performed the rite of Awakening and was blessed by Naga with her power and a warning that the only way to permanently kill Grima would be his own power.
On Naga's advice, the group proceeded to Origin Peak to confront Grima, whereupon Robin realized that they could potentially kill Grima due to their status as having some of Grima's power. Naga confirmed this, but with a warning that doing so would likely kill Robin. Chrom objected to this, believing that Robin should not sacrifice themselves to save future generations. After defeating Aversa for the final time, Naga transported the group onto Grima's back to attack his weak point, the hierophant of the future at the nape of his neck. The hierophant Grima tried to coerce Robin into rejoining with the present Grima to make their power complete, threatening the lives of their allies, and forcibly dragged Robin to a void and dealt a crippling dark blow. Robin, however, was brought back to reality by the cries of Chrom and his allies, and joined them in a final battle with Grima and the Grimleal.
Upon dealing a crucial blow to the hierophant, two options lay before Robin: to let Chrom finish Grima off and thus only put the fell dragon to sleep, or to finish Grima off personally and kill the beast forever at the expense of their own life. If Chrom was allowed to deal the final blow, Robin remained with Chrom, who insisted that it was for the best so Robin could remain alive to help the world as they always did. Otherwise, Robin smote Grima with a blast of dark magic and permanently destroyed him, only to fade away and die with some last parting words to Chrom. Chrom, however, believed Robin was still alive somewhere, too strong to completely vanish, and resolved to spend the rest of his days trying to find them. Ultimately he and Lissa succeeded in finding Robin, again lying in a field, but this time they were free of Grima's blood, no longer having Grima's brand on their hand.

Creation and customization
When starting a new save file, the player is prompted to create the save's avatar. The process comes in three stages:
- Gender: Choose whether to play as a male or female avatar.
- Appearance: Create the physical appearance of the avatar from a set of five options:
- Build: Each gender has three physical builds to determine the basic size of the avatar. In both cases, build 01 is the average, default size, build 02 is a smaller size with a younger appearance, and build 03 is a larger and somewhat older size.
- Face: Each gender/build combination has five faces to choose from. For the most part these are subtle differences, although face 05 adds a scar or accessory not otherwise present.
- Hair: Each gender/build combination has five hair styles to choose from.
- Hair Color: There are a total of twenty hair colors which can be chosen.

- Voice: In the English release, each gender has three different voices to choose between. The Japanese version has four different voices for each gender, each with a somewhat different style marked by their pronoun usage, as well as the option to have the avatar be completely mute; unlike the English version, these also make minor alterations to the game's written script. The mute option was removed in international versions; the option itself makes Robin speak in nothing other than ellipses with exclamation points and question marks, with substantial script revisions to accommodate the lack of input from the avatar, marking the primary reason it does not appear in releases outside of Japan.

- Profile: Personalization options for the avatar connected to gameplay.
- Name: The player can, of course, name their avatar. The absolute character limit is 12 characters long (if one were to input a entire line of "I"s; realistically, the limit is around 8 with wider letters) due to variable width font in international releases. There is a word filter in place to prevent potentially obscene names from being transmitted through StreetPass.
- Birthday: Choose the avatar's date and month of birth. This determines when they receive their birthday bonus at the barracks.
- Asset and Flaw: Choose the avatar's best and worst stats. This determines their initial stats, their growth rates and the modifiers to their maximum stats they receive; the stat chosen as their asset will be the highest in all three categories, while the chosen flaw will be the lowest (though not particularly low).
In all cases, the avatar will begin the game as a Tactician, and can later be reclassed at will using Second Seals. Access to certain classes is based on the avatar's gender.
Role
Although playable from the beginning and a major character, Robin is not mandatory for most of the game; after Chapter 2, the only chapter where Robin is forced to be used is Chapter 23. In any case, Robin's death at any time is an automatic Game Over.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Robin can be described without a hint of exaggeration as a black hole around which the entire Awakening metagame revolves. They are available for the entire game and join with decent base stats, but the real crux of their power is their default Veteran skill. This gives them a massive boost to experience point gain which allows them to make far better use of early investment than any other unit. Robin also boasts the semi-unique ability of perfect class access, shared only with their children and Einherjar. This allows them to make use of the best classes in the game such as Sorcerer and Dark Flier as early as Chapter 8, the chapter where the first Master Seal is obtained. Their increased experience intake makes it perfectly plausible for them to get to level 10, reclass with the Renown Second Seal, and get all the way to level 20 in time for Chapter 8. Once Robin promotes, they will snowball out of control extremely quickly and break the game's difficulty curve on their knee. Powering them up early also allows them to pass their stats down to Morgan and one other child, giving you three combat monsters to wipe out armies with. In short, Robin is thoroughly broken, effectively mandatory for surviving Lunatic and Lunatic+, and still easily the strongest unit in the game on lower difficulties.
Fire Emblem Fates
Role
If the player scans the Robin amiibo from the Super Smash Bros. series into the game when prompted, Robin will appear in the player's My Castle. The player can then talk to Robin, and obtain one of two exclusive accessories from him: Robin's Books or the Dragon Feather. The player can scan and talk to him a second time to unlock the accessory that the player didn't choose in the first interaction. If the player scans him a third time, they can challenge his army to battle in a new chapter; finishing the chapter will allow the player to recruit Robin.
In addition, Robin is referenced in the ending for the DLC chapter Before Awakening, as it contains a recreation of the opening of Awakening, in which Chrom lifts Robin's hand; Robin does not directly appear but is mentioned indirectly by Chrom and Lissa.

Robin/Super Smash Bros. series
Robin is a recurring playable character in Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. fighting game series, having first debuted in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. Both male and female variants are playable in the series, and the player can choose which one they want to play as at will; both variants are completely identical in terms of gameplay.
Unlike all past Fire Emblem playable characters, Robin utilizes a variety of magic tomes to cast in their special moves and grabs, though they do use several swords in their physical attacks. Robin is governed by an emulation of the standard Fire Emblem durability system, where their tomes and Levin Sword can only be used a set amount of times before they break and must be left to recharge for several seconds before they can be used again.
Code Name: S.T.E.A.M.
The default male version of the Awakening avatar, using the default name of Robin, appears as a bonus character in Code Name: S.T.E.A.M.. His appearance is triggered by using the Super Smash Bros. Robin amiibo in the chapter preparations menu. As is standard for the Fire Emblem series, but atypical of characters in Code Name: S.T.E.A.M., Robin cannot be brought back into a battle after being defeated; instead, the player must use his amiibo again in order to use him again.
Female Robin makes no appearance at all.
As in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, Robin appears in this game in his male Tactician attire from Fire Emblem Awakening, and is voiced by Yoshimasa Hosoya and David Vincent in Japanese and English respectively. His two weapons are the Levin Sword and Tome, the former allowing him to strike enemies with lightning at medium range, the latter allowing him to launch fireballs at a great distance.

Trivia
- All bonus units in Awakening are pre-set avatar builds with a unique portrait.
- The first pre-release images of the Japanese version of Awakening portrayed Robin with the default name Jase (Japanese: ジェイス).
- In Robin's few cutscene appearances, they are entirely mute and appear with their hood raised to obscure their appearance, to avoid having to take into account their customizable appearance.
- Like in Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem, Robin was originally planned to have personality traits to determine asset and flaw.[3]
- All of the Japanese female voice options for Robin are voiced by the same person, Miyuki Sawashiro. Sawashiro also voices "Boku 02" among the Robin's Japanese male voice options.
- Robin is one of two characters to have dialogue in a support conversation not directly involving them. They appear in Tharja's C supports with Frederick and Vaike. Robin shares this trait with Chrom.
- In Heroes, the five available variants of the Grima-possessed Robin are unique among dragon units in that they do not transform into a dragon when attacking; instead, Grima appears behind them to attack.
Voice credits
Outside of Awakening, the male and female Robins are portrayed by one specific voice actor per gender, who in most cases are their default voice option from Awakening for their respective gender and language.
- In Super Smash Bros., Code Name: S.T.E.A.M., and Fates, male Robin is portrayed by Yoshimasa Hosoya in Japanese (the default "Boku 01" voice) and David Vincent in English (the default "Male 01" voice).
- In Super Smash Bros., female Robin is portrayed by Miyuki Sawashiro in Japanese (her default "Watashi 01" voice). In English she is voiced by Lauren Landa, in the style of Michelle Ruff's "Female 01" voice.

- ↑ "Validar: You carry my blood—the blood of the fell dragon. His soul slumbers within you. And now the time has come to awaken you both!
Robin: ...Wh-what?! I'M Grima? I'M the fell dragon?!
Validar: The Grimleal have worked for generations to create someone like you... A vessel worthy of our master. Simply having Grima's blood in your veins is not enough... My father was not worthy, nor was his father before him. Even I was not able to accept Grima's most sacred gift. But you? You had all the makings. You were perfection!
Robin: N-no...
Validar: If your damnable mother hadn't been seized by weakness and fear... She betrayed us—stole you from your crib, and fled with you in the night! I know naught of your life thereafter; but all that matters is your return. That you are here is PROOF of your purpose! It is why you still draw breath!" — Validar and Robin, Fire Emblem Awakening - ↑ "Oh, actually, one last thing: it seems Asset/Flaw was originally going to be personality based, rather than stat-based. Although the personalities were way too obviously stat-based (eg. "Powerful" for Strength and "Wise" for Magic), so they probably thought it was pointless." — VincentASM, Avatar asset/flaw growth additions revised (webpage), Serenesforest.net, Published: May 10th, 2015, Retrieved: May 10th, 2015
