Growth point

Growth points are a game mechanic appearing in Fixed Mode of Path of Radiance altering the probability of a unit's stats increasing during a level-up.

Overview

In Path of Radiance, the Fixed Mode is unlocked upon completing the game for the first time. This is an alternate method of unit growth which revolves around the accumulation of growth points from fighting enemies with certain weapons to dictate a unit's growths, the other option being called Random Mode, which is the standard growth rate system used in the rest of the series and in the first playthrough of Path of Radiance by default.

In Fixed Mode, character growth rates act more like "points" and contribute to a set of values called growth points, which are used to determine stat increases. Additionally, the character's equipped weapons and items and the enemy's class slightly alters the type and amount of growth points that are gained. The more growth points were accumulated, the more that particular stat will rise.

The formula for calculating growth points gains is as follows:

Growth points = experience gained × (unit's growth rate + equipped weapon's alteration + equipped item's alteration + enemy class's alteration)

When calculating the amount of growth points gained, the game will round them to the nearest integer. During a level-up, 100 growth points are consumed for each stat rise, while growth points that are not used remain. The maximum amount of Growth points a character can accumulate is 255.

The formula for calculating a stat rise is as follows:

Bonus experience manipulation

Due to growth points being rounded to the nearest whole number, it is possible to trick the game into gaining more growth points than normal, and providing more stat gain, by choosing specific bonus experience increments for units to gain. The method also works with experience gained in combat.
