It's a fact that Ilia couldn't survive without war. We are giving our own blood as well to survive.
— Zelots to Noah in a support conversation.

Zelots (Japanese: ゼロット Zelots) is a playable paladin in Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade who first appears in Chapter 7. He is the lord of Edessa and the leader of a mercenary squad who are hired by Lord Hector of Ostia to help Lycia in the war against Bern.

Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade

Role

Zelots is the lord of Edessa, the headquarter of the renowned Ilian mercenary squads. He leads himself a small band and, at some point shortly before the game's events, is hired by Lord Hector to help Lycia in the war against Bern. However, they do not manage to join the Lycian army before Hector's fall, and they end up stuck in the city of Ostia. Zelots turns down General Legance's offers and stays loyal to his convictions, hoping to join forces with Roy. He and his group do so during the battle between the loyalists and the rebels, and they work for Roy for the rest of the war.

When Roy's forces, known by then as the Etrurian Army, reach Edessa, Zelots discovers that his own castle has been taken by General Murdock of Bern and that his wife, Juno, has become a hostage. He and his sisters-in-law, Shanna and Thea, go to free her, only to find that Juno had already decided to fight alongside the Etrurian army. Working together, they defeat Roartz, who had hidden in the castle, and later lead Roy to where Maltet, the Divine Weapon of Barigan, lies.

Once Bern is defeated and the war is over, Zelots returns to Ilia. Eventually, he manages to unify the lands and becomes the first king of the nation.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Zelots is a prepromoted paladin who joins in chapter 7 on turn 2. Because of the awkward position he joins in it is quite difficult to keep both Zelots and Treck alive. Zelots can be considered the second Jagen type unit alongside Marcus, having similar bases and growths to him. Zelots however has a higher sword and axe rank allowing him to use halberds, hammers and killing edges at base. Thanks to his class he has 8 move, canto and control over the weapon triangle making him an excellent combat unit for this part of the game and giving him amazing utility.

Unfortunately, similarly to Marcus, Zelots also drops off badly during the Western Isles arc if Lance or Alen have been promoted, as they cover his utility as a paladin. Zelots can still function well as a filler unit in this circumstance due to his aforementioned paladin utility, but will likely have a hard time keeping up with other trained units and will be of little use in maps like chapter 14. If you are holding on to your Knight Crest to promote at level 20 or used it on Bath or Bors, he has a much better time. Zelots can serve the same function Marcus did in Lycia, acting as a great tank and weakening enemies so your other units can get the kill.

Similar to the other prepromoted paladin, Marcus, Zelots' utility, weapon levels and bases will make him a strong unit when he joins, but due to his awful growths he will drop off and likely be outclassed by other trained up cavaliers and Perceval. However, Zelots' performance in the earlygame is not to be understated and he will still likely find more use than most units in the Binding Blade.

Personality and character

Zelots' personality is defined by his work. He is a proud soldier of Ilia, and quite aware of how his homeland's future depends on each mercenary's behavior and exploits.[1] However, as a good leader, he does not romanticize war and mercenary work, telling his men that, even if they have more experience on war than most of their new comrades, they should be prepared for the worst. In his supports with Noah, it is revealed that, despite some of his men are working for Bern now, he does not think badly of them because of it. This strict yet caring attitude towards his men makes him a father in their eyes; several[2] of their last will-letters are addressed to him.[3]

He shows a more hesitant attitude as a family man. He suggests Juno to return home to take care of their baby, but can only offer weak objections to Juno's arguments against it.[4][5] On a lighter note, he gives in easily to Shanna's questions about his romance with Juno,[6] but does not manage to make his sister-in-law to tell her own experiences.[7]

Used in gringe's patch. Jerrot is a name meaning "brave with the spear",[8] a fitting name considering his starting proficiency in lances.

Juno: I'm fighting because I'm her mother. I want to raise her in a peaceful time without war.
