Ever since I was a kid, I've lived my life by one rule—that I'd only play my hand if I was guaranteed victory. I've gotten this far by using my cunning in any way necessary—lying, cheating, even killing when there was no other way...
— Yuri

Yuri Leclerc (pronounced /ˈjɝi/[key]; Japanese: ユーリス=ルクレール Yuri Leclair) is a playable character in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, made available via downloadable content. Yuri plays a prominent role in the DLC side story, Cindered Shadows. He is the leader of the Ashen Wolves, an unofficial fourth house of Garreg Mach which exists in Abyss.

Biography

Yuri was born to a prostitute in Faerghus, with his father's whereabouts unknown. He was taught how to read and write by an elderly man whom his family had nursed back to health. Later in Yuri's childhood, he became incredibly ill, but the same man returned and healed him. It's implied that this elderly man was Saint Aubin, for Yuri is the only known bearer of the Major Crest of Aubin, neither of his parents are said to have bore a Crest, and it's incredibly rare to bear a Major Crest. Saint Aubin could have given his own blood to bring Yuri back to health.

In Imperial Year 1174, he was adopted by Count Rowe under the pseudonym Yuri. Some time after that, he was tasked with assassinating the daughter of Count Varley, Bernadetta, where he posed as a gardener at their estate to gain her trust. Bernadetta considered Yuri to be her first friend she ever made. After he gained her trust, he began an attempt to assassinate her in her sleep, but he hesitated before he committed the deed. He couldn't bring himself to do it, which allowed Count Varley to catch him in the act. His men brutally ganged up on him, and he barely survived.

He was once a student of the Blue Lions house at the Officers Academy in Imperial Year 1178. However, he was expelled from the school for the murder of several church soldiers. He was sentenced, but Aelfric, one of the Church's cardinals, pardoned him. Yuri was then sent to Abyss underneath Garreg Mach, and was tasked by Rhea to monitor Aelfric, because of his suspicious behavior.

After the timeskip, if Yuri was recruited, he returns to Garreg Mach on the day of the millennium festival and accompanies the group throughout the war. If not recruited, Yuri disappears from Abyss, and his whereabouts are unknown.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Yuri is an interesting unit as he was seemingly tailor made to function well in any sword related class, except maybe the Hero. He has strengths in swords, reason and faith, as well as a budding talent in Bows that grants him the ever useful Deadeye combat art. Thus it is recommended he masters the Noble and Myrmidon classes and then slots into Thief. Afterwards he will do well as an Assassin, Trickster, Dancer, or Mortal Savant as all of them play to his strengths and offer unique play styles and utility, especially as the latter three let him leverage his decent reason and faith spell-lists (of course this list also includes the Swordmaster, but said class doesn't offer anything unique compared to these classes, bar its +10 critical modifier, however).

The Trickster will offer him unmatched utility with the Foul Play combat art, which can only be used in this class. Yuri can make especially good use of this with his personal relic, the Fetters of Dromi, as he can Foul Play a unit in danger and then Canto back to safety. The Mortal Savant will boost his offensive output with both swords and dark magic thanks to the appropriate faire skills. Meanwhile the Dancer allows him to let other units move a second time. While still being able to spellcast and heal on the side on turns where dancing isn't needed. This class also makes the most use of the Fetters of Dromi as it grants him +1 Movement and Canto, both of which are endlessly useful for a Dancer.

It should be noted however, that both Dancer and Mortal Savant severely undercut his most outstanding feature: his extraordinary speed growth. Yuri is the fastest unit in the game, able to even outspeed enemies even on maddening mode. As an Assassin he will enjoy a colossal speed growth of 85%, while also having access to Swordfaire, thus granting him impeccable offensive capabilities. These are only impeded by the inherent nature of swords not having a ranged option outside of the Levin Sword. Yuri does well enough with a Levin Sword though, and can otherwise rely on Bows for long distance combat, though Assassin lacks Bowfaire, so his damage will be lower compared to his output with swords.

Yuri's main drawbacks lie in his weaknesses in Axes, Lances, Flying and, Riding, impairing his ability to attain useful skills and classes. Desperation would be amazing with his speed growths, Wrath would combo nicely with the Mercenary's Vantage skill and the Wyvern Rider and Wyvern Lord classes would be a great boon to his HP and Strength growths.

In terms of skills, both Death Blow and Fiendish Blow would bolster his offences, depending on which attacking type the player prefers him to use. As he only requires a D+ rank to have decent odds of passing the Brigand certification exam, he should have no trouble acquiring the skill despite his weakness. Furthermore, if the player does not intend to make another unit their dancer, Yuri should take on the White Heron Cup just for the Sword Avoid +20 skill.

Personality and character

Despite his crude language, Yuri is devoted to protecting the people of Abyss.

Yuri, Underground Lord
After Fódlan healed from the war, Yuri's organization spend the next few decades cultivating and controlling illicit markets. Not coincidentally, wherever Yuri's underground business thrived, so did orphanages or almshouses. For the awe and respect of his generosity earn him among the downtrodden, Yuri came to be known as the the "Underground Lord.

Yuri, Underground Lord & Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon
No sooner than the modest wedding ceremony between Byleth and Yuri over than the battle of those who slither in the dark began in earnest. Through the bloody and brutal fight, the couple became known for their constant determination the save every possible life, leaving none behind. The battle marks the last mention of them on official sources, but stories abound of the order they brought to the underworld upon their triumphant return.

Yuri, Underground Lord & Byleth, Guardian of Order (Male)
As the new Archbishop of the Church of Seiros, Byleth worked tirelessly to reform and rebuild in the aftermath of a devastating war. Constantly at his side during that time was his husband, Yuri, who's policy proposals led, time and again, to better education and opportunities for the less fortunate. After working to ensure a bright and properitus future for Fódlan, the couple stepped back from the public eye vanished from official record. Curiously, informal notes and letters from friends suggested that the pair was extraordinary long-lived and their youth was untouched by the passage of time.

Constantly at her side during that time was her husband, Yuri, whose policy proposals led, time and again, to better education and opportunities for the less fortunate—a legacy that was later taken up by the couple's children. A trove of their love letters, uncovered many years later, revealed that she called him by an entirely different name in private. Scholars have never learned why.

Yuri, Underground Lord & Bernadetta, Eternal Loner
Bernadetta’s struggle with anxiety made it difficult for her to take over as the head of House Varley. She became so overwhelmed that when Yuri chanced to visit her domain, she literally grabbed hold of his arm and refused to let go. Baffling as it was for Yuri at the time, this peculiar state of affairs eventually led to marriage. The commonfolk were initially perplexed, but over the years they became grateful for Count Varley’s surprising husband. His presence kept her calm and allowed her to deal with her people more frequently and easily. As a result, her talent for governance blossomed and her rule was widely celebrated.

Yuri, Underground Lord & Dorothea, Mystical Songtress
A new opera company was born of the postwar rebuilding period. This troupe, headed up by a former songstress, was comprised of hand-picked talent from all walks of life. Though it began humbly, over the years it grew to rival even the Mittelfrank Opera Company in its greatness. The most popular production in its repertoire was a tale of a disillusioned songstress making a comeback with the help of her ambitious lover. Through that story, the names of Yuri and Dorothea live on to this very day.

Yuri, Underground Lord & Balthus, King of Grappling
After the war, Yuri returned to the underworld. Some time after assuming control of the illicit markets, he happened upon Balthus, who had become so down on his luck that he had collapsed in an alley. Yuri helped Balthus back to his feet and offered him work as a bodyguard. While Balthus first accepted just to get by, he came to enjoy the lifestyle so much that he remained at Yuri's side for the rest of his days. The underworld kingpin and the Indomitable King of Grappling made such an impression on the world that their names were feared for centuries.

Yuri, Underground Lord & Hapi, Freed Spirit
Yuri accompanied Hapi to the village where she was born. The surprise nature of the visit, combined with a local custom of massive celebrations for family reunions, made things awkward at first. The party did not get started until nightfall, but Hapi was able to reunite with her parents, and under that starry sky, lasting bonds were forged. In fact, it is said that Yuri, a complete stranger, made such an impression that the welcome party lasted for seven days and nights before he was finally permitted to leave. Years later, they returned for another visit-this time as a couple. The village turned out en masse for the wedding, held under those same stars.

Yuri, Underground Lord & Constance, Sorcery Incarnate
After the war, Constance devoted herself to her magical research. Her unorthodox methods allowed her to make great strides, which earned her acclaim and eventually enabled her to restore her noble house. Afterward, almost as if to spite her detractors, she married Yuri. The pair made a happy, if unconventional, couple, as the husband frequently ventured away for months on end. In the long years of their marriage, however, Constance laughed off any concerns as she known to say Yuri always knew to find his way home. Many decades later, he passed away in bed alongside his beloved wife.

Yuri, Underground Lord & Ingrid, Stalwart Knight (Azure Moon)
Yuri disappeared into the underworld of the western Kingdom and faded away into obscurity. The only account of him after that comes from a Kingdom knight’s journal, uncovered many decades later, which tells of Yuri’s efforts to win the king’s support for an orphanage and medical clinic to be built in the slums of the castle town. It is believed that the journal belonged to Ingrid, who had declined to rule House Galatea in order to serve House Blaiddyd as a knight. According to a local rumor, Ingrid eventually retired from knighthood to become the owner of an inn. There, it is said she and the man she wrote about cooked dishes loved by rich and poor alike.

Yuri, Underground Lord & Ingrid, Stalwart Knight (Other Routes)
When Galatea territory was seized, Ingrid argued strongly for the preservation of its borders. Her request was granted and she was appointed to rule. Though, since she had previously abandoned her noble house, she was not well accepted by the people. Despite this, she found that the commonfolk carried out her policies with unexpected enthusiam and efficiency. She soon discovered that it was Yuri who had convinced them of her wisdom. The two were reunited and eventually married, and under their stewardship, Galatea territory flourished, It is said that, after a busy day of governance, Ingrid yearned for nothing more than a home-cooked meal prepared by her husband.

Battle quotes

Yuri: Do you truly intend to forfeit your life for House Rowe? There's still time to change your mind.
Ashe: I finally understand Lonato. He knew the price of standing for his beliefs...and he paid it gladly. I will do the same.
Yuri: I like you- don't be an idiot. Or maybe I'll just have to smack some sense into you.

— Yuri fighting Ashe in Silver Snow/Verdant Wind Chapter 15
Gwendal: So. You've chosen to turn your blade against the count. Heh. Never thought I'd see the day, mongrel.
Yuri: And yet you are seeing it, aren't you? Say what you will. I know your true feelings for me. Sure, you watched my back by order of the count. But you cared too. You were the only one who treated me as an equal.
Gwendal: That is all in the past. This is no time for misplaced sentimentality. I must do what I came here to do.

— Yuri fighting Gwendal in Silver Snow/Azure Moon/Verdant Wind Chapter 15 and Crimson Flower Chapter 16.
Well, what have we here? Some lost kids stumbling around in the dark. Stay awhile, won't you? Shame indeed not to have a bit of fun with each other while we've got the chance, you know?
— Yuri as an enemy in Cindered Shadows Chapter 1
Yuri: I know you... You're the one Lord Lonato adopted. Isn't that right?
Ashe: That's right. Wait... I recognize you too! You're Count Rowe's adopted son! I don't know how you ended up here, but your house is no doubt worried sick! Let's get you home, OK?
Yuri: You really think I'd choose to go back there? Haha! Better watch yourself-you might lose a limb...or your life.

— Yuri as an enemy fighting Ashe in Cindered Shadows Chapter 1
Be careful who you choose to follow. Ha, I suppose it's too late for that now, isn't it?
— Yuri in Cindered Shadows Chapter 2
Aelfric: In the end, like all birds of prey, you'll turn on your master as easily as you'd turn on your victims.
Yuri: Nothing and nobody can shackle me. A caged bird never sings.

You can't hear me now. Not like this. Not anymore. You really are a damn fool, you know that?
