Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Ymir joins in the lategame as a prepromoted Warrior. Due to his join chapter requiring the player to have fifteen or fewer surviving units and the two chapters after his recruitment having sixteen deployment slots and no recruitable units, he is effectively guaranteed to see combat in at least two chapters assuming he is recruited. This works out well for him, as his base 18 Strength as a Warrior is sufficient to take a Poleaxe with +4 might and start chopping off Paladin heads. Past that, his HP and Speed are sufficient to avoid being one-rounded by the magic-users in Chapters 23 and 24, although most physical enemies will make mincemeat out of him. By the endgame, he will no longer be capable of contributing in combat effectively since the enemy cavalry's bulk has outstripped his damage output and he himself lacks the bulk to survive combat with most enemies without investment. Still, he serves his purpose as a lategame filler unit with no real opportunity cost beyond the standard side quest requirement of having most of your army dead. Ymir by himself isn't really worth going out of your way to recruit, but if you're already visiting side quests anyway and pick him up, he's more than capable of pulling his weight for a couple of chapters.
