The Wyvern Rider (Japanese: ドラゴンナイト Dragon Knight), known as the Dracoknight in Radiant Dawn and Shadow Dragon, is a flying class which debuted in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light and is present in all games since save for Gaiden and Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. The core aspect of this class is that members of it ride wyverns.

In Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, Mystery of the Emblem, Shadow Dragon, New Mystery of the Emblem, and Three Houses, the Wyvern Rider/Dracoknight is an advanced class, in the former four games being the promoted form of the Pegasus Knight. They originally wielded lances and swords, being able to use swords only when dismounted into a Knight in Mystery of the Emblem. The Nintendo DS remakes changed this to have them wield lances and axes, in order to differentiate the class from the Falcoknight, the new alternative Pegasus Knight promotion option. This change was also reflected in how the only recruitable Dracoknight, Minerva, was made to specialize in axes and came with the strongest axe, Hauteclere.

Dracoknights break from the Pegasus Knight's nimble frailty in favor of being bulky and powerful. They have high strength and defense, while still keeping decent skill and speed and the traditional high mobility of a flying class. In comparison, Dracoknights suffer from particularly low resistance, to the point that promoting from Pegasus Knight to Dracoknight even specifically lowers a unit's once-formidable resistance. They share the traditional flier's weakness to bows and wind-based tomes such as Shaver, with these tomes being particularly lethal against Dracoknights due to their terrible resistance.

In other games, Wyvern Riders/Dracoknights are instead a based class, being the basic form of a new class family independent from the Pegasus Knight. The class's primary weapon of choice was lances until Radiant Dawn, when they instead began primarily wielding axes; in Genealogy and Thracia 776, they could also wield swords.

When a base class, he Wyvern Rider acts as a statistical counterpoint to the Pegasus Knight: whereas its pegasus-riding cousin is fast and frail, the Wyvern Rider is oriented in a bulky, powerful manner. Their strength and defense are both high, with lesser skill and speed compared to Pegasus Knights, and they share the same high movement and access to Canto as Pegasus Knights and other mounted classes. However, their resistance is abysmal even compared to other physical classes. They also share the Pegasus Knight family's weakness to bows and wind magic, in addition to their own weakness to weapons designed to be effective against dragons.

In almost all of its appearances, Wyvern Riders change class to become Wyvern Lords. The biggest exception is Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, in which the Wyvern Rider is instead the promoted class of the Dragon Rider. The Sacred Stones, Awakening, and Fates also introduce alternate promotion options for Wyvern Riders which can be chosen instead of the Wyvern Lord: The Sacred Stones allows them to instead become Wyvern Knights, Awakening allows them to promote to Griffon Riders, and Fates allows them to promote to the newly-introduced Malig Knight class.

Trivia

  • The Wyvern Knight of Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, and the ability of Pegasus Knights to promote to it, may have been a nod to the Dracoknight's status as a former pegasus knight promotion.
  • The Wyvern Rider's generic portrait in Fates depicts them wielding a lance, despite the fact that they can only use axes in that game.
