Elibe

The Western Isles are the numerous islands off the western coast of Elibe. Presently, they are colonies of Etruria. The Western Isles are rich in resources, so mining is a major industry here. However, these resources are worth a fortune. Inevitably, varied bands of rogues traveled there hoping to loot the mines. As such, the people of the Western Isles live in constant fear of bandit attacks.
— Opening narration of Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade Chapter 9.

The Western Isles (Japanese: 西方三島 Three Western Islands) are an archipelago of mineral-rich islands situated on the north-western coast of Elibe, comprised of three major islands: the central-north island Fibernia (Japanese: フィベルニア Fibernia), the south-western island Caldonia (Japanese: カレドニア Caledonia), and the north-eastern smallest island Dia (Japanese: ディア Dia). For much of their history, the Isles have been ruled by Etruria as colonies, and have been exploited by a dominating mining industry owing to their mineral-rich landscapes.

History

Human civilization arrived in the Western Isles in the aftermath of the Scouring, with the arrival of Durban of the Eight Legends. During the remainder of his lifetime Durban founded a clan of warriors in the Isles.[1] At some point in the intervening millennium, the Isles were in turn colonized by Etruria, which established a vast and profitable mining industry in the region at the expense of the inhabitants of the Isles, which it exploited for slave labor in the mines. The mines in turn attracted an assortment of criminals and bandit groups seeking to profit from stealing the highly valuable output of the mining industry.

By the year 999, governance of the Etrurian operation in the Isles was led by Arcardo, an Etrurian nobleman of no political importance other than his role in the Isles.[2] During the Disturbance of Bern, Arcardo arranged an alliance with Bern, the war's antagonists, seeking to benefit from their power and the world's instability. In conjunction with Roartz, an advisor in the Etrurian court, Arcardo arranged for the Lycian army under Roy to be summoned to the Western Isles to assist with combating the bandit problem, in order to keep them away from the mainland while they instigated a coup d'etat against King Mordred.[3] During his tour of the Isles, Roy learned first-hand of the state of the Isles under Etrurian colonialism and ultimately sided with the anti-Etrurian resistance, freeing the archipelago from its corrupt lords before marching on Jutes, the capital. Upon his arrival at Jutes, Arcardo abandoned the city and fled back to the mainland, leaving behind Flaer of the Bernese army to fight Roy, who in turn left the capital in the "care" of the War Dragon Ein; following the liberation of Jutes, Roy left the Isles upon hearing of the coup d'etat in Etruria. Some years after the end of the war, the Western Isles - now free from Etruria - were reformed by the resistance hero Ekhidna into a new nation, the Western Union.[4]

Notable locations in the Western Isles

In Fibernia

Jutes

Jutes

Jutes is the capital of the Etrurian occupation of the Isles, from which Arcardo ruled. At the climax of his campaign in the Western Isles, Roy launched an attack on Jutes to bring an end to Etruria's exploitation of the people of the Isles, but instead fought a Bernese unit "led" by the War Dragon Ein.

Armagh

A fortress situated within a coastal valley, guarding the main road to Mount Eburacum. It was ruled by Lord Nord until the arrival of Roy.

Mount Eburacum

A mountain in the north of Fibernia which houses the largest of the Etrurian mining operations, governed by Bishop Orlo on delegation from the Elimine Church. It also houses the hideout of the anti-Etrurian resistance led by Ekhidna.

Small village

A village situated on the south-eastern coast of Fibernia, governed by Zinque.

Armads cave

The Armads cave

At some point after the Scouring, Durban erected a small shrine deep within a cave near Jutes and enshrined his axe Armads within it. The cave is lined with geysers of poisonous fumes, providing Armads natural defenses in addition to Bramimond's seal upon it and the lingering spirits of Durban's former Scouring allies, led by Kaim.

In the year 980, under Athos's direction and following Bramimond undoing the seal, Hector fought Kaim's spirits to obtain Armads for use against Nergal, after which Armads was left unguarded. Twenty years later, a bandit group led by Guerrero was delegated by the Bern army to collapse the cave and prevent Roy from gaining access to Armads.

In Caldonia

Edina

A castle located along the south-eastern coast of Caldonia, ruled by Lord Morgan until Roy arrived. It runs a prison operation, capturing able-bodied men to be sent to work at Mount Eburacum.

Gameplay

The Western Isles are the subject of Chapters 9 through 12 of Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade, with the addition of the sidequest Chapter 12x; the vast majority of the action happens on Fibernia, while Dia is not visited at all. Chapters 10 and 11 comprise a pair of branched routes: the "A route" (10A and 11A) has Roy journey north to Mount Eburacum, while the "B route" (10B and 11B) has Roy travel west to Caldonia to liberate Edina; both routes rejoin after this at the battle for Jutes.
