Volke (Japanese: フォルカ Volke), also known as Fireman, is an assassin who appears in both Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. He has worked for multiple employers, including Ike, Greil, and Bastian. After Greil touched Lehran's Medallion and killed Elena, he hired Volke to kill him if he ever went mad again. For Ike, Volke appeared as a common thief with information. He appeared saying he had information, and was going to give it to Ike in exchange for Gold. Later on in Path of Radiance, Ike learned the truth and found that Volke was really an assassin. In Radiant Dawn, Bastian hired Volke to help hunt down Izuka, the scientist who created drugs that turned Laguz into Feral Ones, among other unspecified jobs.
Even though both him and Sothe begin as thieves, Sothe becomes a whisper while Volke becomes an assassin.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Volke is the first of two thieves that joins. His class has 7 move unpromoted which is higher than all infantry unpromoted beorc. He has respectable offensive base stats and growths, ensuring his strength, skill, and speed will start useful and keep up if raised. However, as a thief, he is limited to knives which are the weakest weapon type in the game. Knives and Daggers have 2 and 4 might respectively, and cannot be forged, so despite his good strength base and growth, he will struggle to deal decent damage until Stilletos are available. When promoted, he has an extremely low strength cap (which he will hit easily). He also has no 2-range option. His defense and resistance base and growths are low, so he should generally be kept out of combat anyways. Volke and Sothe (with Blossom) have comparable stats as thieves, but Volke is available for longer and can actually promote unlike Sothe.
The main reason to use Volke is for his thieving utility. He can open doors and chests, though note that non-thief units can do the same by breaking doors or using the abundant chest keys in the game. He can also steal items from units, including unequipped weapons, elixirs, and Physic staves. The last is noteworthy on harder difficulties as physics cannot be bought. Note that he can still steal when promoted to an assassin. He also has a 100% chance to find hidden items in the desert, which is significant due to being able to find the hidden Boots reliably. However, any thieving action he does costs a little bit of money. Due to the abundance of funds in Path of Radiance, this should never be an issue, as long as the player does not have almost literally zero gold.
Volke starts with the Shade ability, which is immediately helpful due to his poor durability, and he should be kept out of combat. Miracle can also help, though his luck stat is poor so it is better used on some other utility unit like a healer. On paper, Lethality is one of the better occult abilities. However, this means using Volke primarily as a combat unit. It also requires landing a critical hit for a chance to activate; as Volke is stuck with knives, the most crit chance he can get is with Stilletos, nowhere near as much as a killer weapon. Thus Lethality is a very impractical skill, though it is worth considering if the player really wants to use Volke for combat and has an unused Occult.
Volke has a wind affinity, and his only support option is Bastian, another wind affinity. Supporting them requires using both on larger combat-based maps, and it gives extra accuracy and avoid to two units that should not be dodgetanking in the first place. Furthermore, Bastian has better options with Makalov and Lucia, if he were to be used. Volke is generally better off not supporting at all.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Volke is the only assassin in the game and can be recruited at the cost of 3000 gold. He has excellent offensive base stats and enough growths to cap strength, skill, and speed to prepare for endgame. He is the only unit in the game with Lethality, which gives him potential to one-shot units in his join chapter and endgame. He also has a +25 innate crit bonus, giving him extremely high crit rates. However, as an assassin, he is stuck with knives, so without the Baselard, his might will be very low. If the player wants to commit to using Volke, it is recommended to have someone with a full inventory in chapter 4-3 find the Baselard and send it to convoy, so Volke's team can pass it to him. For endgame, he will end up reliant on crits and Lethality, as most physical enemies have high defense. He also has a respectable 22 base resistance which helps his durability against the tails. Ultimately, Volke is a decent filler endgame unit but outclassed by other endgame units like the laguz royals. Note that Sothe, another knife user, is also forced into endgame, but he will rarely be as good as Volke with respect to endgame.
Volke starts with Stillness (which is unreliable) and Lethality, which is the main novelty in using him. If the player is using him, he might as well learn Adept to have more chances of crits and Lethality, thanks to his excellent speed and skill.
Volke has a wind affinity, giving both accuracy and avoid, neither particularly useful for him. As he joins so late in the game, he will realistically not have time to build supports with many units. His best candidates are units in chapter 4-5 that are in his join chapter.
