Don't worry. Everything is under control. I've brought along a certain something from Renais. It will negate whatever futile resistance they offer.
— Novala to Riev

Victims of War (Japanese: 憎悪の泥濘 Mire of Hatred) is the sixth chapter of Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. Eirika continues her journey south. She witnesses one of the horrors of war inflicted on the innocent and a secret held closely by the royal bloodline of Renais.

Plot

Main article: Victims of War/Script

After the game's short narrative detour to Ephraim's exploits, Eirika continues her southward journey to Grado in search of answers. She is spurred further by the dark news she received from Natasha regarding the Sacred Stones and Grado's intent to destroy them.

Wishing to avoid more conflict with Grado, Eirika opts for a more remote region to travel through. However, this proves unfruitful, and she is located by a small Grado force regardless, having been followed after the clash at Serafew.

Away from the beaten path, Riev and Novala discuss their course of action; they must capture Eirika and her bracelet. Novala reassures Riev that he has a certain something from Renais that will guarantee his victory. Riev is placated with this news, and departs, saying he has a mountain of tasks to attend to. Novala is off-put by so plainly being called a servant, and, after Riev's departure, expresses that he will take Riev's place at their master's side after his successful capture of the Princess of Renais.

A few moments later, Novala appears before Eirika and her companions, startling them. Novala quickly demands Eirika's bracelet and for her and her group to discard their weapons. Novala tells Erika that her brother Ephraim was defeated and rots in Renvall's dungeons. Eirika refuses to believe Novala's words. Novala, seeing that the conversation is going nowhere, displays a prisoner, a child from Renais, and demands Eirika's bracelet for the child's life. Eirika then surrenders her bracelet to Novala, despite Seth's protests. Novala then demands, again, that they surrender their weapons as well, however Seth steps in and directly refuses this request. Novala commends Seth for not being a complete fool, and announces his hostages have no further use. After a moment he decides to have them transported to a nearby valley, where bael are said to live, to Eirika's and the villagers's horror.

Novala is positively amused by everyone's reactions, though Eirika steels her will and confronts Novala, calling him the heartless craven he is. Novala brushes off her words, saying all is fair in war, and that her words mean nothing. Novala then warps himself to the far side of the valley, laughing, and sets his troops on Eirika's force.

Eirika is successful in defeating Novala's underlings and Novala himself. Seth then approaches Eirika, having recovered her bracelet from Novala, and tells Eirika the significance of the bracelet; it is half of the key used to unlock the chamber that Renais' Sacred Stone is hidden in. Seth is deeply concerned by Grado desiring Eirikia's bracelet, as this information is supposed to only be known to the Royal family of Renais. Eirika, feeling that time is of the essence, immediately resumes her journey south to rescue Ephraim.

If the three villagers survived the chapter, they will gift Eirika an Orion's Bolt at the conclusion of the battle.

Beginning log

Eirika suppresses her feelings of unease and continues to search for her brother. Passing through Serafew, the group crosses into the Grado Empire. From here forward, there is no doubt that they are walking through hostile territory. In hopes of avoiding unnecessary trouble, Eirika and company head for a sparsely populated region of Grado. However, it is too late. Their movements are already being tracked.

Strategy

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

Send Vanessa to the east as fast as possible to guard the civilians; they will die without intervention. It is also possible to kill Novala before the Bael is close enough to kill the villagers; this generally would involve ignoring most of the enemies and making a beeline for Novala with Seth.

The soldier with the Halberd will always drop the last weapon in his inventory, and he will most commonly attack with the Halberd so you only get a rather common Iron Axe. To counter this and get the valuable Halberd, have Franz and/or Seth bum rush him before he can attack.

Trivia

Ephraim, Kyle and Forde regrouping at Adlas Plains during chapter 5x.
  • A cutscene in chapter 5x shows that Eirika had only barely missed encountering Ephraim at Adlas Plains.
  • Even if the player manages to save all three civilians, only two of the civilians (the girl and the woman) are shown thanking Eirika for saving them in the chapter's ending scenes.
  • In the prototype Novala simply kills the child and other villagers after Eirika surrenders her bracelet; the player has no opportunity to save them.
  • During the ending scenes Seth refers to Novala by name despite Novala never disclosing it to anyone in Eirika's group.
