From Fire Emblem Wiki, your source on Fire Emblem information. By fans, for fans.

Resetting is a common act done by players of the Fire Emblem series, often to revise strategy when an unfavorable event occurs (such as a unit's death). When present, the death counter for each unit at the end of the game will not go back down after resetting.

"Soft resetting" is a type of resetting that does not involve turning the system off and then back on. Soft resetting usually involves pressing a button combination that will reset the game without turning off the console or closing the game. Nintendo's major home consoles from the NES to the Wii also have a reset button on the console itself, which acts in a similar manner. Additionally, the Wii also has a reset option that can be selected in the menu brought up by pressing the Home button.
