List of mutually exclusive playable units
Also known as Arran and Samson archetype units, these are two characters that cannot be recruited into the player's army at the same time. Be it one bans the other, or the chapters they are obtained on are mutually exclusive, or the events that conspire to allow them are mutually exclusive, for one reason or another the player may only obtain one of them at a time.

In Chapter 16, there are two villages that will give each one of the two units. The left village contains Arran, and the right village contains Samson. Although left up to the player's discretion in this game, it is suggested by Book 2 of Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem that Marth chose Arran and Samson did not join his army. | ||

If she remains unmarried or deceased by the end of the generation, then the Substitute characters appear where her children would have gone. Substitute characters can coexist in a mix-and-match style with their child counterparts, but cannot coexist with their individual ones. For example, Deimne and Muirne can coexist with Larcei and Scáthach, but not with Lester and Lana. |

If Byleth obtains a C+ support with Edelgard and sees an optional scene after talking to her during Chapter 11, the Crimson Flower Route can be chosen and unlocks Jeritza as a playable unit during Chapter 13. Minimum required units in each game
This lists the number of units that will be inevitably recruited to your team, no matter what happens. To play the game in such a manner is known as minimal, lowest, or fewest recruitment challenges, as the smaller numbers + potential loss of key units makes the games much more difficult.

- Due to the majority of the recruitment in Gaiden and Shadows of Valentia being done by talking to the characters outside of battle, it is possible to skip the recruitment by not talking to them.
- In Gaiden, Gray blocks the exit of Ram village until Alm talk to him and joins his party. Due to a glitch, it is possible to bypass this, by saving and resetting the game after talking to Mycen a second time. NPCs will be in different positions, and now Lukas (or no one if already recruited) will be blocking the entrance, thus making Alm capable of leaving Ram without recruiting any of the villagers. In Shadows of Valentia however, recruiting Gray and Tobin is required to progress.
- In Gaiden, recruiting either Mae or Boey is enough to progress while in Shadows of Valentia, recruiting both is required.
- While recruiting Clair, Clive and Saber is also required to progress in Shadows of Valentia, they are all avoidable in Gaiden.
In total, Gaiden, at 5 (6 if Gray is not counted as skipped) units versus the usual 31, has the smallest required to obtainable ratio.
In total, Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, at 12 units versus the usual 33, has one of the smallest required to obtainable ratios.
