Under Gray Skies/Script
Three years have passed since Crimea defeated Daein in the Mad King's War. Crimea has ceded its right to rule Daein to the Begnion empire, who rules Daein with an iron fist. To protect the people, Micaiah has helped found the Dawn Brigade, a group of vigilantes who oppose Begnion's oppression. One day, Micaiah and her friend Edward are waiting to meet their friend Leonardo when bandits led by Pugo attack. Micaiah and Edward immediately battle the bandits. Leonardo eventually arrives to reinforce them, and the three drive off the bandits and slay Pugo.
Afterwards, the Dawn Brigade earns the admiration of a boy named Nico who was observing the battle. Begnion soldiers arrive to arrest the trio, who immediately flee the area. General Jarod, leader of the occupation army, arrives on the scene. When he learns of the soldiers' continued failure to capture the Dawn Brigade, he murders one of them and orders the rest to obtain information from the villagers. He and his second-in-command Alder agree pursing the Dawn Brigade will liven up their boring assignment.

Strategy
This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody. |
This chapter serves as a nice introduction to Radiant Dawn. You immediately get two units: Micaiah and Edward. Micaiah is one of the game's main protagonists, and her death spells an immediate game over. She plays like a Knight, except based on magic instead of physical strength. Edward is in an odd position as far as units go: on Easy and Normal, his excellent growth spread allows him to cap 6 of his stats by the end of the game, making him an extremely good unit. However, on Hard, the penalties to experience gain and his base inferiority to Zihark make him far less viable. His unique weapon, Caladbolg, does little good for him since it only gives him +8 luck. A little later in the chapter, you get the archer Leonardo. His stats are somewhat problematic at times, but he is the Dawn Brigade's only bowman and his unique weapon, the Lughnasadh, gives him a ridiculous +5 Speed boost come part 3. He can be valuable if effort is invested in him.
Player Turn 1: Start by having Edward weaken the Bandit and Micaiah finish him off.
Enemy Turn 1: Another Bandit approaches.
Player Turn 2: Same strategy. Stab him and then proceed to kill him.
Player Turn 3: Move Edward into the chokepoint so that he is in the attack ranges of all of the next three Bandits. They can only attack one at a time, and they need four hits to kill him, so he will be fine. Have Micaiah heal Edward if he needs it and have her attack the nearby Bandit from safety if he does not.
Enemy Turn 3: The first Bandit attacks Edward.
Player Turn 4: Leonardo arrives. Have him approach your allies. Have Micaiah attack the Bandit, and Edward finish him if he survives that. You will get a Herb.
Enemy Turn 4: The next Bandit attacks.
Player Turn 5: Once again, same strategy. Weaken him and then kill him.
Enemy Turn 5: The last of the trio attacks.
Player Turn 6: The strategy continues the same. Take this opportunity to transfer Leonardo's Dracoshield to Edward. Hold on to it for now - Nolan, who you get in the next chapter, is the one who can make the best use of this valuable item.
Player Turn 7: Move Edward into the range of the next Bandit and have him use a Herb. Have Micaiah heal him the rest of the way.
Enemy Turn 7: The next Bandit attacks Edward.
Player Turn 8: Have Leonardo wound the Bandit, Micaiah finish him, and Edward move into the range of the last Bandit and use a Herb if he needs one.
Enemy Turn 8: The Bandit attacks Edward.
Player Turn 9: Same strategy. Have Leonardo wound the enemy and Micaiah finish him. Move Edward into Pugo's range so that Pugo has to go through him to get to Micaiah and Leonardo, but both of them can attack at the same time. Use a Herb if you need one - Edward needs at least 15 HP (or 14 if he has grown Defense by this point) to survive an attack by Pugo, and he needs to have grown a point of Strength in order to safely kill him in two rounds. If Edward can't deal 6 damage per strike, he needs a Wrath-induced critical hit to kill Pugo and clear the chapter in 10 turns.
Enemy Turn 9: Pugo attacks Edward.
Player Turn 10: If Edward got a critical hit, great. Let Leonardo wound Pugo and Micaiah finish him off. If not, Edward will have to deal the final blow.
By the end of the chapter, Micaiah and Edward should have both leveled up once each. Edward needs a point of Strength and a point of Speed to ensure he can double and sufficiently weaken enemies in the next chapter. Magic for Micaiah would also be helpful, although it is not strictly necessary.
