Two Falchions is the fourth chapter in Fire Emblem Awakening. In this chapter, the Shepherds have been tasked with winning a tournament at an arena with the ruling power of all of Ferox on the line; their opponent just happens to be a familiar masked enigma. Completing this chapter will unlock the Barracks as well as the Outrealm Gate.

Plot

Main article: Two Falchions/Script

Raimi has successfully escorted the Shepherds to the Feroxi capital, and asks Chrom to wait while she summons the khan. Robin wonders if the khan is away; Chrom wagers that the khan is out training, given that khans of Feroxi prefer battle to politics--or, more rather, battle is their politics. Robin is attempting to picture a warrior ruler; he/she imagines "him" to be a giant man of unparalleled thew, with a broad chest covered in hair. As Robin laughs, a woman named Flavia comes onto the scene; she responds to Robin's comment asking that he/she continue their description; Robin is left puzzled. Chrom asks Flavia if she is the khan; Flavia reveals that, to be precise, she is the East-Khan of Ferox, then apologizes for the troubles at the border and states that Chrom is welcome in Regna Ferox. Chrom thanks Flavia for the apology, but reveals confidence that they can put the previous misunderstanding behind them, then asks if it is true about bandits posing as Ylisseans ransacking Feroxi border villagers; Flavia confirms, and identifies them as Plegian, having found documents proving as much on the corpse of one of their captains, revealing that Plegia sees some benefit in raising tensions between Ylisse and Ferox. After a short outburst in reply to Flavia's revelation, Chrom calms down and asks Flavia to forgive him, going into formal speech; Flavia asks that Chrom discard formalities, as Feroxi appreciate plain speech. Chrom asks Flavia to have a word with her border guards; Flavia appreciates Chrom's understanding of Feroxi diplomacy and reveals she likes him already, then reveals she knows why Chrom is here--but regrettably informs that she cannot provide any Feroxi troops for Ylisse. Lissa asks why not, to which Flavia reveals she lacks the authority; Chrom states he doesn't understand, and asks Flavia if she really is the khan. Flavia reiterates what she said before, she is one of the khans, and that the khans of east and west hold a tournament every few years, with the victor acquiring total sovereignty of both of Ferox's kingdoms, meaning that khan has total say when it comes to forging alliances. The West-Khan won the last tournament. Chrom interprets this as receiving no aid at all; Flavia says that's true, but only if he always gives up easily--the next tournament is nigh, and Flavia is in need of champions. Chrom asks just what it has to do with them; Flavia reveals that Raimi informed her that the Shepherds are quite capable, and asks Chrom to consider representing the east in the upcoming tournament; the revealed stakes of a victory being that Flavia, who would then be the ruling khan, would grant the alliance. Chrom reveals that he would have assumed Ylisseans have no place in Feroxi traditions; Flavia reveals that such thinking is completely wrong, as the khans themselves don't fight, they choose champions to represent them--otherwise Ferox would be rife with blood feuds and dead khans, and they don't involve comrades or kin for the same reason. Over time, it had been decided that the tournament should be fought by outsiders, although the outsiders have never involved foreign royalty as far as Flavia knows of. Flavia says the choice is Chrom's; Chrom says there's no choice, his people are desperate, facing not only Plegia's constant attacks but also the added threat of the Risen, and if fighting for Flavia is the quickest way to an alliance, the Shepherds will take up their steel. Flavia wishes Chrom luck in the tournament and hopes for his survival, and offers to show him the arena where the tournament is to be held--but also tells Chrom to be wary, as an equally able swordsman champions the West-Khan; Chrom states that this champion will be defeated by Ylisse's necessity, with Flavia looking forward to seeing Chrom's skill.

Battle preparations may be made once at the Arena Ferox. Once finished, Lissa asks Chrom to look at the West-Khan's champion; it is none other than "Marth", and Chrom does indeed see him. Chrom decides to ask "Marth" one question before beginning the tournament, but "Marth"'s continued silence leads Chrom to decide to let their swords speak for them.

(Cutscene: "Two Falchions") We see Chrom draw his Falchion. Afterward, we see "Marth" draw another Falchion! Chrom asks "Marth" where he got his sword; "Marth" reveals nothing, and Chrom states that there's no way they could both wield the same sword. Chrom and "Marth" begin their duel. As the duel goes on, Chrom asks "Marth" who taught him to fight the way he does; after some more clashing and "Marth" repeating a technique Chrom used earlier, "Marth" reveals that his father taught him swordplay. The duel, and the cutscene, ends with Chrom and "Marth" staring each other down.

Once the cutscene ends, the battle begins. Robin notes that "Marth" is a gifted swordsman, and his underlings also look capable, and that the Shepherds should mind their distance.

After the battle ends, Flavia congratulates the Shepherds and reveals she has their respect--and more to the point, the Shepherds have their alliance, Flavia will provide Ylisse with all of the soldiers they need. Chrom thanks Flavia, but Flavia says she should thank him, it feels like ages since she held full power. Flavia asks her new friends to come and celebrate, then leaves the scene. As Flavia leaves the scene, a man walks onto the scene. The man (whose name is revealed to be Basilio) appears disgusted at Flavia's behavoir--she jumps on any excuse for a party. Chrom asks Basilio if they have met; Basilio introduces himself as the West-Khan that the Shepherds just rudely removed from power, then notes Chrom is handy with the sword but thought for sure he had picked the stronger man. Chrom asks Basilio what he knows about "Marth"; Basilio reveals him to be a sellsword with delusions of grandeur that simply turned up one evening and bested his old champion flat. Basilio claims that action resulted in love at first sight, and he believes he's too old for such things; he reveals that "Marth" is gone, fled the moment the tournament ended. Lissa claims "Marth" to be dark and mysterious; Robin states that at least "Marth" has one fan, with Lissa stating that "Marth" is sort of dreamy, with Chrom telling Lissa that she's sort of dreaming. Lissa tells Chrom to lighten up, that she was just kidding. Fredrick asks Chrom and Lissa that, if their discussion is over, that they had best return home, as Emmeryn will want news of the new alliance immediately. Chrom states Frederick to be right; before Basilio lets the Shepherds go, he states he has a present for them. A swordsman walks onto the scene; his name is revealed to be Lon'qu, whom Basilio then introduces as his former champion. Lon'qu is not much for talking, but is peerless with a sword, as good as "Marth" as far as Basilio sees it. Basilio says he honestly can't figure out why "Marth" beat Lon'qu so quickly; Lissa is shocked to hear "Marth" beat Lon'qu, as Lon'qu looks so big and strong. Lon'qu asks Lissa to step away; Lissa wondered what she said to cause Lon'qu's reaction, with Basilio revealing that ladies tend to put Lon'qu on edge, yet Lon'qu is capable and may even have the makings of a khan. Basilio says that Lon'qu should be considered West Ferox's contribution to the Ylissean cause. Chrom asks Basilio if he is certain about this; Basilio deems Lon'qu Chrom's man now. Chrom asks Lon'qu if he has no objections; Lon'qu says Chrom gives orders, he stabs people, their roles are clear, to which Chrom welcomes Lon'qu aboard. The player can now save the game at this point.

A short time later, the Shepherds have returned to Ylisstol, where Emmeryn has received the news about Ferox supporting Ylisse. Emmeryn thanks Chrom, knowing that sending him was the right choice. Chrom tells Emmeryn that she should see Ferox's warriors, and reveals that the Ylissean people should now be safe from--Chrom doesn't get to finish, as Phila enters the room and delivers troubling news. Emmeryn asks Phila to slow down and then reveal what has happened. Phila reveals that Plegian soldiers have been sighted within Ylisse's southwest border. The Plegians attacked a village in Themis, and abducted their duke's daughter. A very shocked Lissa reveals that Maribelle was the one kidnapped, and asks Chrom to do something. Phila continues her report, stating that the king of Plegia, Gangrel, claims Maribelle invaded Plegia, and Gangrel is demanding that Ylisse pay reparations for this "insult". Chrom is horrified that they appear to have to trust the mad Plegian king; Emmeryn asks Chrom to calm down, that they have to keep their wits about them. Chrom states that they should put a sword through Gangrel's gut and be done with it, given that Gangrel has been trying to provoke a war with Ylisse at every step and won't stop until he drags the whole continent to hell with him. Phila states that she agrees with Chrom, that Plegia has to learn that such actions have consequences. Emmeryn tells Chrom that she understands his feelings, but Ylisse will lose if they give Gangrel the war he wants no matter what the outcome. Their last conflict nearly ruined Ylisse, leaving their people homeless and starving, a mistake that cannot be repeated. Emmeryn says she'll offer parley with Gangrel; Lissa begs for Emmeryn to not do so, and Phila also asks Emmeryn to reconsider as Gangrel cannot be trusted to act in good faith. Emmeryn interprets these responses as having to choose either marching into war or letting Maribelle die, a choice Emmeryn cannot accept. Phila asks Emmeryn to forgive her, that she spoke out of turn, that she knows Emmeryn will always stand by her own principles. Phila does ask Emmeryn to allow the pegasus knights to accompany her; Chrom states that he'll also go, that somebody has to save Emmeryn from her good intentions, with Lissa saying that she wants to be there for both them and Maribelle. Emmeryn accepts, saying that their strength is her strength.

As Chrom, Lissa, and Robin leave the palace, Chrom asks everyone if they're ready to go, that it's a long march through the western mountains to the Ylisse-Plegia border. A mage runs onto the scene, and as we learn his name to be Ricken, he reveals that he's all packed and asks Chrom when they leave. Chrom is surprised at Ricken's presence; he tells Ricken to go back inside, that he's too young for this mission. Ricken begs Chrom to let him come; Chrom knows his skill with magic, and knows he can handle himself. Chrom says he'd feel safer with Ricken and his magic staying in Ylisstol, protecting the garrison; Chrom states his group is off then, and tells Ricken to be good. As Chrom, Lissa, and Robin leave the scene, Ricken begs the gods to let him know how old Chrom thinks he is, that he'll show Chrom just how good he can be.

Summary

To secure Ferox's aid, Chrom must defeat Marth in combat and win East-Khan Flavia the throne. Meanwhile, the kingdom of Plegia kidnaps Lissa's friend Maribelle.
