Two Faces of Evil (Japanese: 魔の双面 The Demon's Two Faces) is the eighteenth chapter of Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones.
Plot
- Main articles: Two Faces of Evil/Script (Eirika) and Two Faces of Evil/Script (Ephraim)
As the group pursue Lyon into a valley, the twins ask L'Arachel if Lyon is permanently lost; L'Arachel states that, as far as she knows, Fomortiis has consumed Lyon's soul, and not even the Sacred Stones could restore such a state. In Eirika's route, Eirika chooses to hold on to some hope that Lyon can be saved; in Ephraim's route, Ephraim accepts Lyon is lost and resolves to personally put his body to rest. Regardless of route, a soldier leads the group into the valley Lyon was tracked to. Ephraim notices Gorgon Eggs scattered about the valley; when the eggs start to hatch, Ephraim orders everyone to prepare for battle.
After the monsters are routed, Lyon teleports in front of the group before teleporting away; in Eirika's route, Eirika chases him further into the valley; in Ephraim's route, Ephraim does instead. In Eirika's route, Lyon appears before Eirika in pain, claiming that Renais's Sacred Stone may be able to heal him; when Eirika gives him the stone, Fomortiis reveals it to be a trick, and destroys the stone. Fomortiis then leaves before Ephraim and company can reach him. In Ephraim's route, Ephraim moves to attack Fomortiis, but is immobilized by a magic trap that allows Fomortiis to take and destroy the Stone; Fomortiis then interrogates Ephraim about his intentions before revealing himself to truly be Lyon, that him being the Demon King was merely and act. Lyon then informs Ephraim that in ten days, he will perform a ceremony in Darkling Woods that will turn him into the true Demon King, and then leaves. The twin that confronted Lyon is left distraught, and is comforted by the other before regrouping. L'Arachel states they still have hope as Rausten's Sacred Stone is still intact, and the group resumes their journey to Rausten.
Beginning log
The group sets off in search of Grado's elusive Imperial Prince Lyon. Innes has ordered Frelian troops to aid in the hunt. The troops return with news that Lyon has moved north. The group's search for Lyon leads them to Mt. Neleras, in the heart of Darkling Woods. The scorching heat and sulphur stench render the area unfit for human habitation... Endless numbers of gorgon eggs stud the forbidding landscape.
