The Transporter (Japanese: 輸送隊 Transporter) is a class introduced in Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade. In that game as well as its prequel, The Blazing Blade, the Transporter serves as the only way to access the convoy and the items within it during battle. Only one character has appeared as a Transporter: Merlinus, who appears in both games. Usually, supply convoys of other games are nameless, or the group of named merchants of Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn run the convoy but do not appear on the battlefield. In contrast to those examples, Merlinus is a character who appears in battles with a personality, dialogue, and even several support conversations.
If it is deployed, when a unit receives more items than their maximum capacity (five items), the item, or another item in that unit's inventory, can be selected to go to the convoy. If it is not present, the unit must discard one item. Since a transporter cannot attack, it must be guarded. Merlinus does have very high growth rates in HP, skill, speed, and luck, which help the only instances of this class have good endurance and dodging chances. If the transporter hits 0 HP, it can still be deployed in the next chapter.
In The Binding Blade, the Transporter class does not change class. Here, Merlinus does take up a deployment space and only gains experience by being attacked, making the class incredibly tedious to level up, but regardless if he is present or not, items can still be sent to the convoy if it is not full.
In The Blazing Blade, the class starts as a stationary tent. Merlinus starts at level 5; after he reaches level 20, he "promotes" to another transporter class, which is the horse-riding class that appears in The Binding Blade. Unlike The Binding Blade every chapter that Merlinus is deployed he gains a level, and he does not take up space in the number of allowed units; the player is asked if he or she wants to deploy Merlinus right before the chapter starts. However, if he is absent, and a unit's inventory is full, the player is instead forced to discard any item present in that unit's inventory. He cannot be deployed in Chapter 26Ex/28Hx, Chapter 28e, Chapter 30h, and both parts of the endgame.
Despite having sprites for when the class promotes in The Blazing Blade, there are no animations displayed when it is attacked.
