Those who slither in the dark (Japanese: 闇に蠢く者 those who wriggle in the dark) are a hidden organization operating throughout Fódlan. They are the remnants of an ancient civilization known as Agartha.

History

Agartha was an ancient civilization who Sothis and the Children of the Goddess, also known as the Nabateans, shared their knowledge with, which allowed them to create highly advanced technology and architecture. Over time, the Agarthans started to fight against themselves and bringing destruction across Fódlan, to the point they eventually waged war against Sothis and her kin in an attempt to impose their supremacy, a battle they lost and purged most of their civilization. This forced the remaining survivors to hide themselves alongside their technology under the surface, from where they created their current base of operations, Shambhala, and prepared for their revenge against Sothis and the children of the goddess for having caused their destruction and had taken from them what they believed was rightfully theirs.

It is speculated by Rhea and Seteth that sometime after this, they allied themselves with Nemesis, whom they leaded to the Holy Tomb where Sothis rested and had him harvest her remains in order for them to create the Sword of the Creator, which he later used in Zanado to slaughter more Nabateans in order to create more weapons for his allies. After his defeat, "those who slither in the dark" recovered his corpse and hid underground once more.

Years later, they attemped to destroy Garreg Mach Monastery with a "javelin of light". Unbeknownst to them, the Holy Tomb had a protection spell put by Sothis which redirected their weapon into a village named Ailell, which ended up consumed in flames. This created what it is known as the Valley of Torment, a place the commonfolk believe it was born as a product of the goddess punishing the sinners who resided in that village.

By the time of the game's story, the Agarthan descendants made their way into Fódlan by replacing and impersonating key people with their own agents, like Cornelia, Tomas and Arundel. This led to the group capitalizing of both the Tragedy of Duscur and the Insurrection of the Seven for the purpose of providing the means and resources for the experiments required to infuse a vessel of their choice the Crest of Flames, which would be the ultimate weapon against the Church of Seiros and, by extension, the remaining Children of the Goddess. Years later, the only surviving imperial heir and their greatest success, Edelgard, allied with the group with the intention of using their resources and troops to take down the Church of Seiros and take over Fódlan for her own separate reasons, while also planning to dispose them once she had archieved her goals in revenge for destroying the lives of her family and her siblings as well for their involvement in the Tragedy of Duscur.

During this alliance, her retainer Hubert started researching the group in order to facilitate their destruction for his liege in the future, and it was in the course of this process that he came up with the nickname the group is mostly identified with during the story: "those who slither in the dark".
