The Radiant Hero is the twenty-third paralogue chapter in Fire Emblem Awakening, and also the paralogue chapter with the highest number. As a paralogue chapter, its events are not integral to the game's main storyline and can be done at the player's leisure. It is one of a group often called the "SpotPass paralogues", as the chapter is unlocked via a SpotPass interaction and also requires beating chapter 25 in order to play. This chapter is unlockable via SpotPass starting July 12, 2012 in the Japanese version, April 25, 2013 in the North American version, and June 11-12, 2013 in the PAL version.

In this chapter, the Shepherds go chasing after lore of Tellius off the coast of Valm and end up in a skirmish with the descendant of a legendary Tellian hero--wielding said hero's weapon--in the process.

Plot

Main article: The Radiant Hero/Script

The Shepherds have arrived on an island off the west coast of Valm having chased rumors of a hidden village in the area; Robin tells Chrom that those rumors were true, to which Chrom asks if a descendant of the Radiant Hero could truly reside in the area, saying he still has his doubts. Robin asks Chrom what he knows about the Radiant Hero; Chrom says he knows only what the legends tell--an unparalleled warrior from another world said to have felled thousands with a divine blade blessed by Ashera herself. Robin finds this interesting and states that, if his descendant exists and possesses even a tenth of his skill, to which Chrom adds on that he'd be of great use to the Shepherds' cause. A man named Priam jumps into the conversation and states that Robin's and Chrom's statement to be true assuming said descendant would even join the Shepherds, which Priam states is a bold assumption; Robin finally notices Priam's presence, with Robin asking when Priam got here and Chrom asking Priam who he is. Priam introduces himself, then states himself to be the hypothetical descendant Chrom and Robin were talking about; Chrom then introduces himself and apologizes for potentially sounding presumptuous, although he states he was completely correct in his assumptions about Priam's strength. Priam calls Chrom's flattery cheap, then asks Chrom to what he owes the honor, noting a royal has come all the way here just to enlist him, to which Chrom confirms; Priam finds Chrom's offer interesting but says he has little interest in following someone else's orders unless they're handed down by a man who can fight for himself. Chrom asks what would happen if he can prove he's such a man, to which Priam takes as a challenge, which Chrom notes is right to the point and says he likes Priam already, stating he accepts Priam's challenge. Preparations take place at this point; the battle begins once preparations are finished.

Once the battle ends, Priam states he's been a big fish in a small pond for too long, and it's time he saw the open sea again--he'll join the Shepherds. Chrom tells Priam he made a good decision and welcomes him aboard. A local knight asks Priam if he's really leaving, that they'd be adrift without him--he was the inspiration of all of the locals and a true friend; Chrom noted that the local knight wore a Valmese knight's armor and he also saw a Feroxi swordsman, then also catches a glimpse of a Ylissean pegasus knight and a Plegian wyvern rider--then tells Priam he has a small army in the area and asks him how it happened, to which Priam states they came to challenge him and never left. The knight says they won't hold Priam back, as the world has need of men like him, then asks the honor of one last match before he leaves, to which Priam says he's on, then tells Chrom he'll try to make it quick; Chrom, speaking to Robin, notes that Priam actually means to challenge everybody--regardless of the skill or crest they bear, he treats them as peers, and despite the violence, Chrom can see peace within this, a brotherhood of sorts. Chrom states that perhaps Priam would help the Shepherds craft a world where this kind of fighting is the only sort of fighting left.

Contrary to some popular belief, which states this chapter (and all of the other SpotPass paralogues) to be part of a free DLC model, this chapter is part of the vanilla Awakening game--it is not considered to be DLC, and should never be confused as being part of any DLC model. This chapter is a full-fledged chapter whose full data, including that for the featured character Priam, is larger than a SpotPass transmission can accomodate, if not larger than chapters that fall into Awakening's actual DLC model. SpotPass originates no data related to this chapter other than the signal that allows the chapter to be unlocked. Once the chapter is added to the world map, it stays on the world map and can be accessed if the requirements are met even if the SpotPass data related to this chapter is not currently accessible to the game, something that would not be possible were it part of a DLC model.

Note: The returning characters list only those recruited by the time this chapter is unlocked. As a paralogue chapter, there is no set timeframe in which the chapter must be taken on; thus, it is possible to have recruited more characters than the above by the point the chapter is started. The returning characters list also does not include any characters recruitable in other paralogues, as the player may not have taken on any other available paralogue chapters yet. The list also does not include any bonus units, as they are recruitable at the player's discretion.

Trivia

  • This chapter is the only one of the SpotPass paralogues not to center around a character who apparently died along the game's main story path.
    • It is also the only SpotPass paralogue to have completely different online summaries between the American and European official Awakening websites.
  • This chapter has the highest potential player deployment in the entire series with 30 player units. It also has the highest initial enemy deployment in the series with 50 enemy units, a figure that ties it with the DLC chapters Smash Brethren 3 and Rogues & Redeemers 3.
  • This chapter is the one of only two in the vanilla Awakening game where every enemy unit has at least one skill on Normal difficulty regardless of conditions (the other being chapter 22).
    • It is the only one of the two that has generic enemy units.
    • It is also the only such chapter on Normal difficulty where some generic enemy units have two skills.
  • Despite Chrom mentioning that there is a Pegasus Knight and a Wyvern Rider among Priam's army, none of their advanced counterparts appear as enemies during the battle.
