Introduction

Roy can hardly believe Larum's account. He quickly pens a letter to Cecilia to let her know of the horrors on the Isles. He also tells her of the actions he plans to take from this point.

After sending the letter, Roy moves towards the Eburacum mine. His goal is to rescue the people suffering from forced labor. Etruria has assigned Bishop Orlo of the St. Elimine Church to supervise the mine. It was already a fruitful endeavor, but the nobles' greed is insatiable.

Eburacum... Known now as the Mine of Death. The wails of the people forced into labor echo through the mines, like the howling of ghosts, never sleeping...

Opening

(At Orlo's location, inside the gates)

Melady: So Princess Guinivere isn't in the Western Isles?
Orlo: We searched every inch of the Isles, and our intelligence has learned nothing from the Lycian Army. The princess is nowhere to be found. I apologize.
Melady: I understand. I will continue my search elsewhere. Bern thanks you for your cooperation, Father Orlo.
Orlo: I pray that you find Princess Guinivere soon.
Melady: Thank you.

(Melady leaves and exits the map through the east)

Soldier: Who was that, Father Orlo?
Orlo: Captain Melady. A wyvern rider from Bern who serves Princess Guinivere. She's searching for the princess.
Soldier: Did you tell her where the princess is?
Orlo: Of course not. Princess Guinivere is far too valuable. High Chancellor Roartz was ecstatic when he learned the princess was in Aquileia. He had the same evil glint in his eye when Prince Myrddin was assassinated.
Soldier: Father Orlo! You must never speak of the assassination...
Orlo: Oh, yes, I must watch my tongue. Regardless, the princess is secure.
Soldier: That's reassuring...
Orlo: So, why have you come before me? Surely not just for court gossip?
Soldier: No, milord. It's regarding the village where the leader of the resistance hides. We are prepared to attack, so I am here for instructions.
Orlo: Well done. Commence the attack immediately, before any unpleasant interruptions arrive...

(At Roy's position in the northwest)

Roy: The resistance hideout is in this village?
Larum: Yes, but the castle's troops may have attacked already.
Merlinus: I must say, that Orlo sounds like a despicable wretch of a man. A bishop should preach the words of God to help the people. But what he's doing is nothing more than torture!
Roy: It would be best to wait for General Cecilia's reply, but...
Soldier: Lord Roy! The castle troops are attacking the village!
Merlinus: Oh dear, no! Lord Roy, should we attack?
Roy: I suppose there's no time to await the reply... The people here need our help, even if doing so means souring our relationship with Etruria...
Larum: Roy...
Roy: We fight!! Make Lycia proud of our actions here today!

(Larum joins the army, and the battle begins)

In battle

At the start of turn 1, enemy phase

(Galle and Melady fly into the map from the east)

Galle: Melady, have you discovered where Princess Guinivere is?
Melady: No... It appears she has left the Lycian Army. I thought we were so close...
Galle: It was a dead end then.
Melady: Galle... I'm sorry. King Zephiel wanted to keep the matter of Princess Guinivere a secret, so only I was assigned to search for her. I'm sorry to get you mixed up in this...
Galle: Don't worry yourself.
Melady: But you work directly under General Murdock. Surely you have other duties.
Galle: General Murdock agreed to allow me to assist you. If she isn't here, then Princess Guinivere must be on the mainland. I'll ask General Narcian for some additional assistance.
Melady: You're going to bow to Narcian?
Galle: Hm? Of course. He's one of the three Wyvern Generals. He leads the offense on Lycia and Etruria.
Melady: Galle, doesn't that... frustrate you?
Galle: Why should it?
Melady: You were to be a Wyvern General. But Narcian put forth that you're not a Bern native and took the title for himself. And you're going to bow down to him and request his help?
Galle: What he said is only the truth... I wasn't born in Bern.
Melady: Still...
Galle: I'm pleased with the position I have now. The king and General Murdock trust me, even though I'm not of Bern by birth. To ask any more would be nothing but greed.
Melady: Galle...

(Galle and Melady leave the map through the east)

At the start of turn 5, enemy phase

Orlo: Ha ha ha... I've a delicious idea... You there!
Soldier: Yes, milord?
Orlo: Tell the brigands the village is in disarray. Have them collect all the money and valuables.
Soldier: Yes, milord. But... are you certain of this? If this becomes public--
Orlo: You forget that I speak for God. To accuse me is to oppose Saint Elimine! I am immune to persecution! Hurry. Before the villagers realize what's happening.
Soldier: Yes, milord.

(Klein and his forces, alongside Thea, arrive from the south)

Klein: That's the Lycian Army...
Thea: They were assigned to fight against the bandits...
Klein: I know. But Lord Arcardo says they're allied with the bandits now. Why they're doing exactly the opposite of their assignment is beyond me...
Thea: ......
Klein: Thea, take your soldiers and attack from the north. I'll commence the attack from here.
Thea: Yes, sir.
Klein: Thea! Hold on.
Thea: Yes, sir?
Klein: I hear that you have siblings.
Thea: Yes, sir, I have two sisters. One older, one younger.
Klein: Are they pegasus knights like you?
Thea: They are, actually. Why do you ask?
Klein: I have a younger sister myself...
Thea: Any sister of yours must be enchanting.
Klein: Yes, she is a sight. I heard, however, she got tangled up in some mess and now she's missing...
Thea: What? Oh my...
Klein: I have some people looking into it, but they've yet to find anything. If I didn't have this mission, I would search for her myself...
Thea: ......
Klein: Thea, be careful out there. For your family's sake.
Thea: Yes, sir. Thank you.

(Thea leaves the map through the south)

Klein: Ready then? Let's move.
Soldier: Sir, are you sure?
Klein: Of what?
Soldier: Lord Arcardo said Ilia's pegasus knights are expendable. They should be fighting on the front line, not us. Surely the lives of us Etrurian soldiers are more valuable.
Klein: Don't be ridiculous. They are reliable companions. We will attack at the same time... or before them, if need be. Understood?
Soldier: Yes, sir.
Klein: ...Lord Arcardo's story is curious, though... The army from Lycia only arrived very recently. How could they create ties with the bandits so quickly...?

At the start of turn 6, enemy phase

(Brigands exit the caves in the east)

Brigand: We can ransack the village?
Soldier: Yes. But in return...
Brigand: Yeah, yeah. Take half the loot to the castle, right? That bishop in charge of you guys is a real piece of work, y'know that?
Soldier: Don't disappoint him.
Brigand: All right, kids! Grab your weapons! Take everything they got!

At the start of turn 7, player phase

Soldier: Lord Roy, bandits are approaching from the mountains in the east.
Roy: They aim to attack the village in the chaos... We must stop them and help the villagers!

At the start of turn 7, enemy phase

(Thea and her troops enter the map from the north-west)

Thea: Are you ready? We move southward!
Pegasus Knight: Captain... Are you sure we'll be all right?
Thea: Is something wrong?
Pegasus Knight: The Etrurian army considers us disposable. They may send us to our doom...
Thea: Where did you hear that?
Pegasus Knight: One of the other riders was told so by someone in the Etrurian army.
Thea: Pay no mind to mere rumors.
Pegasus Knight: But...
Thea: I'm certain Commander Klein would never approve of that.
Pegasus Knight: Do you really think so?
Thea: Commander Klein's not like that. I trust him with my life.
Pegasus Knight: ...Very well. Then we'll trust him as well, for we trust you, Captain.
Thea: Good. Let's go!

At the start of turn 8, enemy phase

(Enemy forces surround an unvisitable village)

Soldier: Echidna! We know you are here! You are surrounded on all sides! Drop your weapons and show yourself immediately!

(Echidna leaves the village)

Echidna: ......
Soldier: You are Echidna, leader of the resistance force?
Young Man: Echidna, I'm so sorry! They threatened the lives of my family...
Echidna: I don't blame you. I'll handle this. Hurry home to your family now.
Young Man: I'm sorry... Truly.
Soldier: Surrender peacefully and Father Orlo may have mercy on you.
Echidna: I've always been a stubborn wench. I have no intention of going quietly.
Soldier: You resist? Then you leave us no choice! Take her head!

At the start of turn 9, enemy phase

(At the gates, where Orlo resides)

Orlo: What is taking so long?! Is the resistance force so powerful?!
Soldier: It's the Lycian Army! They are supporting the resistance...
Orlo: What?! The Lycian League would turn against Etruria?
Soldier: Actually, yes. We've just received a missive from Juteaux! The Lycian Army is responsible for the death of Sir Nord. They are suspected of betraying Etruria's interests. They may also have ties with the bandits. Lord Arcardo now wants them dead or alive.
Orlo: They killed Sir Nord, you say...? It seems they finally have just cause to get rid of the Lycian Army. Ties with bandits? The Lycian Army? Oh, the irony...
Soldier: Lord Arcardo has sent reinforcements to help capture the Lycian Army. They should arrive shortly.
Orlo: He says "capture," but I'm sure he intends to kill them. Let us do the job for him. Eradicate them!
Soldier: Yes, milord!

Talk conversations

Shanna talks to Thea before Klein is recruited

Shanna: Th-Thea! Sister!
Thea: Shanna...?
Shanna: What are you doing here?
Thea: ...I have a contract with Commander Klein of Etruria. Shanna... Are you with the Lycian Army?
Shanna: Yes.
Thea: I see... Then this was inevitable. Draw your lance!
Shanna: No... I don't want to fight you!
Thea: ...Shanna, you know the code of the Ilian mercenaries.
Shanna: ...Never betray your employer...
Thea: Precisely. And we must follow that code, even if it means we must fight our own kin.
Shanna: But... one of us could be killed!
Thea: I know that! But we must fight! Failing to do so would damage the reputation of the Ilian mercenaries. Our nation can't afford to lose its mercenary contracts!
Shanna: Thea...
Thea: Now, draw your lance, Shanna!

(Shanna leaves)

Thea: ...Why... Why does it have to be like this...?

Shanna talks to Thea after Klein is recruited

(If this is the first time she is talking to Thea)

Shanna: T-Thea! Sister!
Thea: Shanna...?
Shanna: What are you doing here?
Thea: ...I have a contract with Commander Klein of Etruria. Shanna... Are you with the Lycian Army?
Shanna: Yes.
Thea: I see... Then this was inevitable. Draw your lance!
Shanna: No, Commander Klein said he would join us! We don't have to fight!
Thea: What? Really?
Shanna: Yes!
Thea: ...That's a relief. I will join you as well.
Shanna: Thanks, Sister!

(Thea and her soldiers become allied units)

(If this is the second time she is talking to Thea)

Shanna: Thea!
Thea: Shanna... Are you prepared to fight?
Shanna: No! We don't have to fight!
Thea: Of course we do. Must I repeat myself--
Shanna: Commander Klein said he would join us! We don't have to fight!
Thea: What? Really...? You're... telling the truth?
Shanna: Yes! To fight me would be breaking the code!
Thea: ......
Shanna: ...Thea?
Thea: ...I'm so relieved...
Shanna: Thea...
Thea: Thank goodness... I was so scared...
Shanna: We'll always be together, Sister...

(Thea joins the army and her soldiers become allied units)

Clarine talks to Klein

Clarine: Klein!
Klein: Clarine? You are safe!
Clarine: I'm sorry I left like I did. But I wanted so badly to see you!
Klein: Oh, the trouble you get into... Well, you're safe, and what's what matters. ...What brings you out here? Did you find a trustworthy mercenary for hire?
Clarine: No, I joined the Lycian Army.
Klein: The Lycian Army?!
Clarine: Yes! My healing staves have been most useful!
Klein: ...I see. I thought your eyes looked... sharper.
Clarine: I'm a lady now, I am.
Klein: ...Let me ask you this. What kind of individual is General Roy?
Clarine: Hmm... He's a tad rough around the edges for a noble... His hair especially is an absolute mess...
Klein: ...Let me rephrase that. Is General Roy working with the bandits?
Clarine: No, of course not! We've been sent here to vanquish the bandits!
Klein: So I heard...
Clarine: The Etrurians here are malicious people... It is so embarrassing... Klein... Are you working for them?
Klein: No. Not anymore.
Clarine: What?
Klein: I want sent here to protect the villagers. I hereby join the Lycian Army to fulfill my mission.
Clarine: Thank you, Klein!
Klein: Shall we, then? Will you introduce me to General Roy?
Clarine: Naturally! I love you, Klein.

(Klein joins the army and his soldiers become allied units)

Roy talks to Klein

Roy: Wait! Aren't you an Etrurian commander? Why are you attacking us?!
Klein: I have specific orders from Lord Arcardo to take you down.
Roy: Can't you see what's happening here? The people are suffering from the lords' abusive treatment! And you're helping them. You should be ashamed!
Klein: ...Wait. Are you saying that you're helping the villagers?
Roy: Yes. The lord here is ransacking the village in search of the resistance. We're fighting to stop him. And you're apparently on his side.
Klein: I had no such intention. My orders stated that you were the ones working with the bandits.
Roy: What?! Why would we be working with bandits? We just want to clean things up here and get home to Lycia!
Klein: ...Such nerve.
Roy: What?!
Klein: Lord Arcardo has made a fool of me. I have been so blind enough not to see through his thin veil of deceit.
Roy: ...Do you see what we see now?
Klein: I am Klein of House Reglay of Etruria. Forgive me for my misguided attack against you.
Roy: I am General Roy of the Lycian Army.
Klein: General Roy, I would advise you to be cautious. With you against Lord Arcardo, I expect him to use every pawn at his disposal to have you dealt with.
Roy: Thank you for the advice...
Klein: If you would allow it, I will join you.
Roy: You will?
Klein: Yes. I wish to monitor you as an Etrurian commander. I should prove useful as both a fighter and a diplomat.
Roy: Thank you.

(Klein joins the army and his soldiers become allied units)

Klein talks to Thea

Klein: Thea!
Thea: Commander Klein! What is the matter?
Klein: There's been a change of plans. We are going to fight under General Roy of the Lycian Army.
Thea: Understood, sir. We shall follow you without question.
Klein: I don't mind a question here or there, to be frank.
Thea: We are Ilian mercenaries, sir. We follow our employer's every order. And besides...
Klein: Yes?
Thea: I trust you to make proper judgments.
Klein: Thank you, Thea.

(Thea joins the army and her soldiers become allied units)

Larum talks to Echidna

Larum: Echidna!
Echidna: Larum? You're all right? That puts my mind at ease... I don't know what I'd say to Elffin if something happened to you.
Larum: I'm sorry... If I hadn't been caught, I could have warned you...
Echidna: It's fine. Don't worry.
Larum: But...
Echidna: It wasn't your fault. Cheer up. And besides, I'm still in one piece, so there's that, eh?
Larum: ...Yeah.
Echidna: Tell me, what is this army you're with?
Larum: Roy and the Lycian Army! They came here to defeat the bandits.
Echidna: Lycia, huh? They've come a long way to get here... Does it look like they'll help our cause?
Larum: Yes! They saved me, too.
Echidna: From the sound of it, I've no reason NOT to join them.
Larum: Really? That's great! I'm sure Roy will be happy too.

(Echidna joins the army)

Houses/villages

The northern village

Girl: Take this! I want to help in any way I can. It's a speedwing! Use it and you'll become a little faster!

(Speedwings)

The north-eastern village

Elderly Woman: It's so difficult under Orlo's rule... He takes everything from us, even our hopes and dreams... Please, take this. I hope it helps.

(Angelic Robe)

The eastern village

Boy: My job is to take the village's tribute to the castle. If we don't, the village will be burnt down. I'll give the money to you guys instead! I'm tired of being stepped on by this oppressive lord. I can tell you're different.

(5000 Gold)

The south-eastern village

Young Man: I'm supposed to give this staff to Orlo... He buys things like this with the money he takes from us. But I'll give it to you instead! Please end his rule... We're counting on you.

(Sleep)

The southern village

Young Woman: This dusty old lance? I'll give it to you to use against the villains here. My foolish brother wielded this before he died. He was a terrible fighter, but he believed his cause was just. That's what got him killed... He was so very foolish...

(Axereaver)

The south-western village

Middle-Aged Man: Good luck to you! We can't even touch these guys. Some people in your army can use bows, can't they? This should be helpful. I know it's not much... but I want you to have it.

(Orion's Bolt)

The western village

Young Woman: I have staves for sale if you want any! Wait a second. Have I met you before...? Ah, probably just my imagination... Anyway, how many staves do you want? They work really well. They cure conditions instead of health. You don't want any?! Darn! I'll give you a sample, so buy one next time!

(Restore)

The central village

Middle-Aged Man: Oh! You're the resistance force, aren't you? What? No? Ahhh, that explains it... This is quite a situation you're in, though... Here, take this. We believe in you.

(Dragonshield)

Battle quotes

Orlo enters combat

Orlo: Opposing me... is the equivalent of opposing God! I shall rain divine punishment upon you!

Orlo enters combat with Ellen

Ellen: Aren't you... a priest? The things you've done...
Orlo: What of them? Anything can go unpunished... if done in the name of God!
Ellen: ...There is no salvation for you.

Orlo enters combat with Saul

Saul: With all the evil you've done, I dare say you've lost the right to call yourself a bishop.
Orlo: Evil? I am simply living as I like. All deeds are righteous if done in the name of God. Very convenient, don't you think?
Saul: You're a disgrace to the church. Punishment awaits you!

Orlo dies

Orlo: You... heathens... ...I represent God...

Ending

Merlinus: Lord Roy, there is a young man claiming to be with the resistance here.
Roy: I'll see him. Let him pass.
Elffin: I am pleased to meet you. My name is Elffin. I am a member of the resistance force.
Roy: I am Roy of the Lycian Army.
Elffin: You have my thanks for saving our village here.
Roy: We simply did what we believe is right.
Elffin: But now you stand against Etruria.
Roy: Even so, I have no regrets. We may have opposed Etruria's immediate interests, but once the truth about the Isles is out, I'm certain they will understand. I sent a letter to a trustworthy Etrurian noble. If she takes appropriate measures, they will send us aid.
Elffin: I would not be so sure...
Roy: Why is that?
Elffin: Don't you find it odd that Etruria requested your help here at all?
Roy: Actually... yes, I do.
Elffin: If I may be so bold as to guess... Was it High Chancellor Roartz and Lord Arcardo who requested your help?
Roy: ...It was.
Elffin: There may have been ulterior motives for sending your army away. Perhaps your presence in Lycia was undesirable to them.
Roy: I never even considered that...
Elffin: There are rumors... that Roartz and Arcardo are working with Bern.
Roy: What?! Then Lycia is in danger!
Merlinus: L-Lord Roy!
Elffin: Your country may be in peril. Are you free to waste your time on the Isles as you are?
Merlinus: He's right! Bern wanted us out of Lycia so they could launch an invasion! We must head back at once!
Roy: ...We stay here.
Merlinus: What?! Why?!
Elffin: ......
Roy: It's difficult to judge what may be hearsay and what may be truth. We can't simply jump on this rumor and run back to Lycia. I am certainly concerned, but my father and General Cecilia are there. The people on the Isles have only us to rely on.
Merlinus: That may be, but...
Roy: If we leave without finishing our mission, then all we've done here was for naught.
Elffin: ...Your army is blessed with a levelheaded leader.
Roy: What?
Elffin: Lord Roy, I am sorry for testing you so.
Merlinus: Testing us?! So that was a lie?!
Elffin: It was the truth. However, I presented the rumor in a way that you might take rash action. Your leader is a prudent individual. I would join you if you allow it.
Roy: ...I don't like that you tested us. But if you can help, I welcome you. Now, back to the concern we face here. What can we do to help the people of the Isles?
Elffin: We must go to the capital. To Juteaux. The people will only be liberated if the corruption is overthrown.
Roy: Then it's settled! We head for Juteaux! We fight for the people! We will defeat the true enemy!

If all villages were saved

Middle-Aged Man: Are you General Roy?
Roy: Yes, I am.
Middle-Aged Man: You saved our village. We owe you our livelihoods. Please, take this as a token of our gratitude.

(Hero Crest)

If Klein and all his soldiers survived

Soldier: Commander Klein, we will stay and help with reconstruction as directed.
Klein: Good. These people need you.
Soldier: Would that we could fight at your side. Here is the bolt we were holding for you. You may need it more than we do. Farewell and good luck, Commander Klein.
Klein: Thank you. Good luck to you as well.

(Orion's Bolt)

If Thea and all her soldiers survived

Pegasus Knight: Captain! We will return to Ilia to make our report.
Thea: Very good. Thank you for your service.
Pegasus Knight: Oh, and take this... Your sister gave it to me before we left. Please be careful...
Thea: Thank you. You too.

(Elysian Whip)
