— Robin, after witnessing Nowi's transformation
|
The Grimleal is the eighth chapter in Fire Emblem Awakening. In this chapter, the Shepherds run into a sellsword and a dragon being pursued by a group of assailants hired by a religious cult. The Shepherds set out to protect the dragon, but things don't get to an easy start with the sellsword.
Plot

Having arrived in Plegia, Chrom tells Robin that he'd like to believe it's their cunning that got them this far without being spotted, yet they've seen far too little of the Plegian Guard, even going as far as to ask where they are. Chrom believes that, whatever trap Gangrel has planned, he has yet to spring it and is in no hurry to. Frederick walks onto the scene and reveals that some of their scouts report some manner of engagement downfield; Chrom reveals he understands and asks everyone to get ready to move. Frederick reveals that the desert sands tend to bog down their units, with only mages and fliers likely to be able to proceed unhindered. Chrom says he'll keep that point in mind, and asks Robin to discuss strategy; battle preparations take place at this point.
Once preparations are complete, a young manakete named Nowi, out of breath, claims if she has lost "him"; a mercenary named Gregor appears on the scene and asks Nowi why she is not comprehending something. Nowi asks Gregor to get away, and everyone to leave her alone; Gregor asks Nowi to quiet down, that she'd give away their position, which would be very bad. Nowi reveals that her throat is dry, her shoes are full of sand, and some big weirdo is trying to kill her. Gregor asks Nowi why she treats him like a villain; the scene then shifts over to Chrom's group, where Chrom asks Gregor, whom he believes is hostile, to keep his hands off Nowi. Gregor asks who the fiend is, introduces himself, and tells Chrom he has things wrong; Lissa doesn't believe Gregor, calling him a creep, with Gregor responding that his day has been nothing but insults and punches to his groin, all for doing a good deed! Gregor asks the Shepherds to listen, that he only wants to do something; the game cuts Gregor off as Chalard, the leader of the group of enemies on the field, arrives. Chalard reveals he has got the "slippery scamp" and asks that the enemy prepare for a dose of Grima's wrath. Gregor tells Chrom that he and Nowi are in a terrible situation, and asks Chrom if he now sees that Chalard's group is trying to catch Nowi and Gregor. Chrom asks why everybody--including Gregor--is after Nowi; Gregor reveals he is not part of the group trying to catch Nowi, and asks Chrom to look closer as he might not see him from so far away as Gregor states he has an innocent-baby face. Chrom and Lissa have a hard time believing; Robin tells Gregor that "innocent baby" isn't the best way to describe Gregor's face. Gregor asks the group to never mind, and asks that they believe Gregor is not an enemy, to which Chrom states this discussion is making his head hurt. Chrom says the Shepherds will sort Gregor out later, protecting Nowi is first priority. Nowi asks if Chrom will indeed protect her; Chrom states he'll do everything in his power to keep her safe, asking Nowi to hold on until they can reach her so they can drive off the enemy. The battle begins at this point; three villages are focused upon, and Chrom reveals they need to be warned, but wonders who to send, saying someone that can swiftly move through the sands would be best.
Should Nowi engage in battle during this chapter, she will ask her opponent to get away from her, then proceed to transform into her dragon state. Once the exchange of attacks end, Robin notices Nowi being a dragon; Chrom reveals Nowi as a manakete, and states he never thought he'd see one. Robin now believes that Nowi doesn't need their help more than the Shepherds could use her help.
Once the battle ends, Nowi cries having gone through the worst day ever. Gregor asks Nowi not to cry, as the evil people are now dead. Nowi sees Gregor is right, and thanks him, even apologizing for being mean to him earlier; Nowi states that she gets nervous around people outside her age group. Gregor laughs, stating that he's closer to Nowi's age group than the other people present. Chrom asks Gregor if he could look after Nowi, as the Shepherds need to press on; Gregor reveals that he is a mercenary, and asks Chrom if he could instead hire him. Gregor reveals he just finished killing his former employers, but reveals himself to be very reliable, and states as long as the Shepherds not try to hurt Nowi, Gregor won't hurt them. Gregor also reveals that he needs steady income--as he has many angry former employers. Chrom asks Gregor if he is a sellsword; Gregor replies that he is a very swell sword, that his cost performance is very high, and Gregor gives his word. Chrom decides to hire Gregor. Nowi wonders what will happen to her, as she states she won't go back on the auction block; Lissa asks Nowi if she's been sold like a slave, to which Nowi says it's happened and to more despicable men than Lissa could possibly imagine. These men made Nowi transform for them, all while drinking, laughing, and calling out tricks; Lissa wonders what kind of scumbags would buy and sell a litle girl, even one that can transform into a dragon. Frederick reveals Nowi may be little, but isn't nearly as young as one might think, as manaketes have very long lifespans; Lissa then asks Nowi how old she is. Nowi reveals she doesn't know exactly, but places her estimate at roughly a thousand, but reveals that she has no wrinkles. Frederick states that dragonkin are more resilient than humankind, and Nowi would make a strong ally; he also states that the Shepherds cannot risk Nowi falling into the hands of the Grimleal. Robin asks who the Grimleal are; Frederick reveals that the Grimleal are followers of the fell dragon Grima, the very same dragon the first exalt of Ylisse defeated a thousand years ago, and that there are some even today that yearn for Grima's return. Flavia asks if the group can get some rest, as they're almost to the Plegian capital and they'll need all their strength once they get there.
Summary
Chrom and Lissa learn their sister is to be put to death, and launch a rescue mission. On the way, they battle the Grimleal: the fell dragon's loyal followers.

Trivia
- As Awakening includes classes that can utilize both physical and magical implements, it is not immediately apparent as to which classes qualify as mage classes for purposes of desert movement. The Tactician tree, despite having access to tomes, is not considered a mage class for this purpose; on the other end of the spectrum, the War Monk and War Cleric classes, by virtue of being the advanced forms of the clearly-magical Priest and Cleric classes, are considered mage classes even though their means of offense is the axe.
- Despite taking place entirely in a desert, this chapter does not offer any hidden treasure, a departure of typical desert chapter practice. The same is also true of the following chapter.
