Introduction

Bern surrenders with King Zephiel's death. The great war that rattled the foundations of Elibe is over. Roy's battle, however, is not.

Roy continues his search for the Dark Priestess, believed to be the demon dragon. Following the legendary weapons' light, Roy heads for the Dragon Sanctuary. However, waiting for Roy at the entrance to the sanctuary is Brunnya, the last surviving Wyvern General of Bern. With the remaining troops of Bern at her command, she awaits Roy's approach.

With a heavy heart, Roy prepares to fight the ghost of the now dead Bern...

Opening

(Inside the Dragon Sanctuary)

Brunnya: Sir Jahn, Idunn is here. I leave her in your care.
Jahn: And what about you, human? What will you do now?
Brunnya: I will stay here, I will face the Etrurian Army... and my destiny.
Jahn: Do you have sufficient troops?
Brunnya: The wyvern riders scattered around the continent have returned to us.
Jahn: Do you have any chance of victory?
Brunnya: ...Our chance of victory is minuscule at best. But we are the Bern Army, the strongest force in Elibe. If nothing else, we shall show them our unwavering will.
Jahn: Your will...? You humans are incomprehensible to us at times. Do you expect your will alone to earn you victory? But so be it. I leave you to your irrational pursuit.

(Outside, at the sanctuary's entrance)

Brunnya: ...Have you given the troops my message?
Soldier: Yes, General Brunnya. I told them they are free to leave if they so wish.
Brunnya: How many remain?
Soldier: Nearly all of the soldiers say they still wish to fight for you.
Brunnya: Nearly all of them? Victory is unlikely. I'm sure many of the troops have family awaiting their return. I do not want any to feel that they must fight on this day.
Soldier: We are knights of Bern, General. We have no intention of bowing our heads to Etruria.
Brunnya: ...Dismiss the injured and those with young children or elderly parents. They are forbidden from fighting in this battle.
Soldier: But General Brunnya...
Brunnya: That is an order. Go.

(Across the lake, to the south)

Elffin: Lord Roy, the troops are prepared.
Roy: ...Did the messenger return?
Elffin: Yes, but as we expected, the enemy refuses to surrender.
Roy: Was it clear that their safety would be guaranteed if they surrender?
Elffin: Yes, but even given the information, they apparently politely refused.
Roy: Why do they fight? Bern's king is defeated...
Guinivere: ......
Roy: Princess Guinivere... Do you understand why?
Guinivere: I do very well. ...Bern recognizes itself as the strongest force in Elibe. Their pride does not allow them to accept defeat without a fight.
Roy: ......

(Merlinus arrives)

Merlinus: Lord Roy! The enemy is advancing!
Roy: ...They leave us no choice. We must fight! Merlinus, send Princess Guinivere to the back lines...
Guinivere: No. I will stay here. I... must listen to their cries. That is all I can do to atone for my betrayal...

In battle

At the start of turn 1, enemy phase

(Inside the eastern village)

Old Man: S-Sir Karel! This place will be a battlefield...
Karel: So I see. I thought I could be free of war in this isolated land...
Old Man: What should we do?
Karel: Please don't fret. I will protect the village.
Old Man: Thank you, Sir Karel! You are truly worthy of the title of Sword Saint! We have nothing to fear with you protecting us.
Karel: I am just an ordinary swordsman. Stories grow with time, so don't trust all that you've heard... ...This war seems to be even greater than I realized. I wonder how my sister Karla fares...
Old Man: I never knew you had a sister.
Karel: I haven't seen her in years, but she fell ill some time ago. I only hope she leads a peaceful life with her husband and daughter...

Villages

Visiting the village with anyone besides Bartre and Fir

Karel: This village has none who wish to join your fight. Please leave us in peace.

Visiting the village with Bartre

Bartre: Karel?!
Karel: Bartre? What are you doing here?
Bartre: I fight with the Etrurian Army. I didn't expect to see you here...
Karel: I've traveled enough. I decided it was time to settle down. I had hoped to train my sword without distractions in this quiet village...
Bartre: ...I have something I must apologize for...
Karel: ...Are you talking about Karla?
Bartre: Yes... I did all I could, but...
Karel: She succumbed to her illness...?
Bartre: Forgive me! I was too weak to save her...
Karel: It is not your fault. It is I who should apologize to you. I wasn't at her side when she needed me the most...
Bartre: ...I wish to ask you a favor.
Karel: What is it?
Bartre: I want this battle to end. I know how you despise warfare... but will you lend us your skills...?
Karel: ...So that's it. Very well. You have my sword.
Bartre: Thank you, my brother! With your skills, victory is as good as ours!

(Karel leaves the village and joins the army)

Visiting the village with Fir

Fir: Uncle!
Karel: ...Fir? Is that you? What are you doing here?
Fir: I never expected to find you here, Uncle.
Karel: I've traveled enough. I decided it was time to settle down. I had hoped to train my sword without distractions in this quiet village...
Fir: Uncle... I must tell you something. Mother... She... passed on...
Karel: ...She's gone?
Fir: Yes...
Karel: ......
Karel: So she succumbed to her illness... I'm sorry. I wasn't there when you needed me the most.
Fir: No... It's alright.
Karel: But why are you here? Surely you haven't been searching for me just to tell me that?
Fir: Actually, I'm fighting against Bern.
Karel: You... joined the war?
Fir: I know that you dislike getting caught up in conflicts like this. All I wanted was to help the people who have suffered from this war. Uncle... Was I wrong? Was I mistaken in joining this fight? Should I have found a better way to train my sword...?
Karel: No, you've made no mistakes. A path you choose on your own is never wrong. In fact, I think I'll join you.
Fir: Really?!
Karel: Absolutely. ...You have grown so much. The last time I saw you, you couldn't even walk yet.
Fir: Uncle...

(Karel leaves the village and joins the army)

Talk conversations

Bartre and Karel, if Karel was recruited with Fir

Bartre: K-Karel!
Karel: ...Bartre? What are you doing here?
Bartre: I fight with the Etrurian Army... What about you, Karel?
Karel: I live here. I've traveled enough. It was time to settle down.
Bartre: Karel... I must tell you something.
Karel: About Karla?
Bartre: ...You already know?
Karel: Fir told me.
Bartre: I beg your forgiveness! I could do nothing...
Karel: I don't blame you. It is I who should apologize. If only I could have been there with you...
Bartre: ......

Fir and Karel, if Karel was recruited with Bartre

Fir: Uncle Karel!
Karel: Ah, Fir... Fancy meeting you here.
Fir: Wh-what are you doing in a place like this?
Karel: I live here. After all my travels around the world, I decided to settle here.
Fir: Uncle... I must tell you something. Mother... She...
Karel: Your father told me. I'm sorry I couldn't be with you. I'm sure it must have been difficult...
Fir: ......

Karel and Roy

Karel: Are you Roy?
Roy: Who are you?
Karel: I am Karel. I have decided to assist your army.
Roy: You're the Sword Saint... Your skills are legendary. We welcome you.

Battle quotes

Brunnya enters combat

Brunnya: Bern will never die! Even if I fall, Bern will rise once more!

Brunnya enters combat with Melady or Zeiss

Brunnya: You are a knight of Bern. You have chosen to follow Princess Guinivere. You have chosen your path as I have chosen mine. If you believe in it, then fight for it!

Brunnya dies

Brunnya: Your... Majesty... Let me be...by your side again... like before...

Ending

Roy: So this is the Dragon Sanctuary... The Dark Priestess is in here?
Elffin: Almost assuredly. But... something is bothering me...
Roy: What's that?
Elffin: Legends of the Scouring say the Dragon Sanctuary has the power of the dragons.
Roy: What does that mean?
Elffin: The sanctuary's power is said to protect the dragons themselves.
Roy: What...? I don't understand.
Elffin: I believe the dragons in the sanctuary may be more powerful than those outside.
Roy: Do you think we still have a chance against them?
Elffin: Probably, but only with the legendary weapons.
Roy: ...It is better to be safe than sorry. I'll take those of us who can wield legendary weapons into the sanctuary.
Elffin: Choose wisely. Once inside, we may be unable to leave freely...
