Plot
- Main article: The Fourth House/Script
Some time after the failed raid on the Holy Mausoleum, Alois delivers a report to Rhea and notices an unfamiliar historical chronicle in Rhea's hands. She explains that after Saint Seiros constructed Garreg Mach Monastery, she attempted to resurrect the goddess through the Rite of Rising along with the Four Apostles: Saints Noa, Chevalier, Timotheos, and Aubin. The Rite failed, the Apostles faded into obscurity, and their bloodlines were lost to history.
Claude notices a suspicious man skulking around the monastery. He recruits Byleth, Edelgard, and Dimitri to help him pursue the man; Linhardt, Ashe, and Hilda also happen upon them and are swiftly strongarmed into lending their aid. The group follows the man through a secret passageway to the hidden underground city Abyss. Meanwhile, the man reports that he was followed to his superiors: Constance, Balthus, Hapi, and Yuri. The four confront Byleth and their companions, accuse them of plotting to destroy Abyss, and attack. Byleth and co. manage to defeat the group. Afterwards, Balthus concludes that they have good intentions. The four explain that mercenaries have been attacking Abyss, and that some members of the Church want to see them purged. Byleth and their companions agree to help them discover who has been attacking them.

Welcome to the Cindered Shadows expansion. Your first order of business is to get acquainted with your starting lineup and the gameplay quirks of the sidestory. Byleth is a Swordmaster with amazing Strength and Speed. Between the Sword of the Creator and the Silver Sword+ you find later on, they will be your main powerhouse throughout the story. Edelgard is a Fortress Knight who is set up to be the party meatshield. You can switch her to Warrior if you need more mobility or offensive prowess out of her. Dimitri is a Paladin with excellent Strength and above-average Speed. He also has Hero available if you don't need the mobility and want better growths. Claude is a Wyvern Rider with good offensive stats and high mobility, making him good for hit-and-run tactics. Linhardt is your Bishop; he is bar-none the best healer in Cindered Shadows and absolutely essential to your survival. Ashe is a Sniper with questionable offensive stats, but his high range and Hit +20 skill allow him to chip safely and accurately. Hilda is a Warrior who serves as a simple melee bruiser. Your lords all have C-supports with Byleth and their appropriate house mates. You gain experience and level up as usual, but you cannot improve your weapon ranks or take new class exams. To accommodate for this, whoever is the MVP of the map gets a sizable chunk of experience.
On to the battle. Before you begin, reclass Dimitri to Hero since this is a slow-paced map and the Hero has a 20% advantage in Speed growth that Dimitri definitely wants. In addition, make sure that at least one of your bowmen is a Sniper so you can outrange Hapi with Curved Shot later on. Take this map slow and steady, using Edelgard to lure in enemies and your other units to finish them off. As you push forward, Hapi will summon a Giant Crawler to attack you and retreat into a secluded room. Edelgard's Blaze gambit will armor break the Giant Crawler on the spot. Once he's dead, have your bowmen pick off Hapi before proceeding. Once your reach Constance and Yuri, aggroing one of the Pegasus Knights will aggro Constance's entire group, and Yuri won't be far behind. Use and abuse gambits to stun them so you can finish them all off safely.
Trivia
- The events of the Cindered Shadows campaign must take place sometime between 8/12 and 1/14, as Yuri is already 20 years old but Hapi has not turned 21 yet.
