The Exalt and the King is the fifth chapter in Fire Emblem Awakening. In this chapter, relations between Ylisse and Plegia have soured, and the Plegian king is out for blood. The Shepherds have to protect themselves in order to escape the area. This chapter is where the titular object of the Fire Emblem series first becomes a part of this game's storyline.

In addition to next chapter in the storyline, completing this chapter will also unlock the second paralogue chapter.

Plot

Main article: The Exalt and the King/Script

Emmeryn, Chrom, and Lissa are nearing the Ylisse-Plegia border, where two Plegian figures lie in wait. The male of the Plegian figures, Gangrel, notices Emmeryn's arrival, and sarcastically claims to need to shield his eyes. Emmeryn asks Gangrel to tell the truth surrounding the most recent incident between their two nations; the female of the Plegian figures, Aversa, says she can tell the truth; Emmeryn asks Aversa for her name, to which Aversa does so. Emmeryn asks if Maribelle is unharmed; Gangrel figures Emmeryn is talking about the "little blonde brat".

The scene shifts to Maribelle being held hostage by a Plegian brigand, and naturally Maribelle asks the brigand to unhand her, complete with an insult. Lissa notices the situation, and Maribelle notices Lissa's presence. Aversa claims that Maribelle crossed the Plegian border without Plegian consent, and wounded brave Plegian soldiers who intended to escort her safely back to Ylisse. Maribelle exposes Aversa's claim as lies, insulting Aversa in the process, and additionally asking Aversa if she learned the meaning of the word "truth" in wretched-crone school. Aversa states that Maribelle has no manners at all, and a "nasty little bird" such as her needed to be caged.

The scene shifts back to the earlier location, where Gangrel reveals that Maribelle's temper is an admission of guilt, which calls for a weighty punishment. Gangrel also considers the possibility that Maribelle could reveal herself to be a Ylissean spy, an act which would need to be answered with an act of considerable good faith simply to repair Ylisse-Plegia relations. Maribelle reveals that she has done nothing wrong, it's Gangrel and Aversa who need to confess--they invaded Ylisse and razed an entire village, and when Maribelle tried to intervene, the Plegians took her and dragged her across the border, stating that the plundered shops and charred homes of that village serve as proof. Gangrel states that such evidence would only prove Ylisse has a bandit problem, something he hears often as of late, but sarcastically states that he shall weep salty tears into his pillow for the dead Ylissean villagers. Maribelle appeals to Emmeryn, who says she believes her and requests Gangrel to let Maribelle go at once--the possibility must exist that the current affairs can be sorted out without the need for hostages. Gangrel considers Emmeryn's request, but as he's getting no apology, he's not going to even bother with parley--Gangrel states he is within his rights to have Maribelle's head this instant and be home in time for supper. Chrom drops an insult toward Gangrel; Gangrel asks Emmeryn to control Chrom before he gets somebody hurt. Gangrel proposes a trade: Emmeryn gives Gangrel the Fire Emblem, and Gangrel will give Emmeryn Maribelle in one piece.

The scene shifts to a depiction of the Fire Emblem, with one gemstone already set in it. Emmeryn asks Gangrel why he would ask for Ylisse's royal treasure. Gangrel reveals that he knows the legend of the Fire Emblem--it is the key to having all one's wishes realized, and Gangrel has desired it for years. His birthday has come and gone each year, and he gets no presents from Ylisse. Emmeryn reveals that the Fire Emblem's power is meant for a single purpose--to save the world and its people at a time of desperate need, and asks if Gangrel could claim a more noble wish. Gangrel states he wants what every Plegian wants--a grisly end for all Ylisseans, and asks what could be more noble than that. Emmeryn appears shocked at Gangrel's statement; Gangrel asks Emmeryn if she has forgotten what the previous exalt, Emmeryn's father, did to the Plegians--naming them heathens, going on a "crusade" across Plegia, butchering countless Plegians including Gangrel's kin. Emmeryn states she has never denied Ylisse's past wrongdoings, but has sworn to never repeat those mistakes, stating that Ylisse is now a realm of peace. Gangrel states that Ylisse is a haven of hypocrisy, and demands Emmeryn give him the Fire Emblem. Maribelle tells Emmeryn she's sooner die than act as a bargaining chip for Gangrel. Gangrel reveals it's time to speak louder than words, and declares the negotiation over, that he shall have the Fire Emblem if he has to pry it from Emmeryn's shiny dead hands.

Several Plegian brigands arrive at the scene near Emmeryn's group; Chrom draws his sword, fells one of the brigands, and asks the other brigands to stay back or else suffer the same fate. Gangrel takes Chrom's words as a declaration of war--a big, messy war that will bleed the Ylisseans dry.

Aversa approaches Maribelle and asks her if she is worth fighting a war over, stating that years from now, Maribelle will be revealed as the one who destroyed House Ylisse. Maribelle is at a loss for words, and calls out for Lissa. A wind spell from out of nowhere fells Maribelle's captor; Ricken arrives on the scene, to Aversa's shock, and tells Maribelle to leave the area, that she's free. Maribelle asks Ricken what he's doing here; Ricken tells Maribelle to run, they can talk about the matter later. Aversa asks Maribelle if Ricken is her boyfriend; Ricken asks Aversa not to talk down to him, and throws an insult toward her in the process. Ricken casts his wind spell at Aversa, pushing her back slightly but doing little damage. Aversa notices Ricken's wind magic; Ricken asks Maribelle to follow him, to which Maribelle agrees and the two of them do. Aversa wonders what she should do, but reveals that Plegia's soldiers have Ricken and Maribelle outnumbered, that Ricken and Maribelle will be long dead before they can reach their comrades. Battle preparations take place at this point.

Once battle preparations finish, Gangrel reveals that he has his war. Gangrel tells the troop captain in the area, Orton, to remain in the area and take down as many Ylisseans as he can, and that he can expect reinforcements from the forts as well. Gangrel tells Orton to do his best at doing his worst before leaving the scene. The battle begins at this point.

Once the battle ends, Lissa and Maribelle finally reunite, the former asking the latter if she's hurt. Maribelle says she suffered nothing that she didn't return twofold. Robin states that he/she is glad Maribelle is safe. Maribelle notices Robin and responds somewhat lukewarmly; Robin knows Maribelle isn't fond of him/her, but her safety is a relief all the same. Maribelle states it's not a question of fondness, she is simply protective of Lissa, revealing her as very sensitive--then realizes she is justifying herself to a commoner and apologizes to Robin for being curt, then thanks him/her for his/her part in the rescue.

A short time later, Chrom asks Emmeryn to forgive him for acting rashly; Emmeryn states it's all right, Gangrel is the one at fault, Chrom was merely protecting her. Frederick reveals that Gangrel will be rallying his forces, if they have not mobilized already, suggesting that the group return to Ylisstol and discuss their strategy. Emmeryn agrees, sensing war being upon them, and that the Ylissean people must be protected at all costs.

Summary

Emmeryn confronts King Gangrel of Plegia, who demands the Fire Emblem, an item vital to the world's future. The parley ends with a declaration of war.

Strategy

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

If the player is playing on Hard or above and wants to bring Maribelle and Ricken to safety, it is best to clear the first paralogue first in order to obtain the Rescue staff. Luckily, even if your only staff user up to this point, Lissa, has somehow not leveled her magic stat at all up to this point, she can still easily rescue both of them at once. On the first turn, Ricken should pair up with Maribelle, who should move as far south as she possibly can. With pair up bonuses from Miriel, even a level 1 Lissa will have just enough magic to rescue the two across the southeast cliff.
