So... you've seen my true form...
— Garon

The Empty King (Japanese: 虚ろなる王 The Hollow King) is the twenty-seventh chapter of the Conquest campaign in Fire Emblem Fates. In this chapter, Corrin finally reveals to the Nohrian siblings what has become of their father, King Garon, and they mount an attack on him.

Although the game can be saved during battle preparations, it is not possible to save the game, read supports, or return to My Castle during the next; both chapters must be completed consecutively.

Plot

Main article: The Empty King/Script
The below plot corresponds to the use of a male Corrin. If you refresh this page, it is possible to get an alternate reading using a female variation instead.

Corrin prepares to enter the throne room with Azura and his siblings to expose Garon's true form and kill him, but the siblings remain skeptical of how he and Azura even know about Garon's state and why they didn't tell them sooner. After pleading his case to them, Xander places his trust in him, though not blindly. Upon opening the door, Azura's words proves to be true as the throne reveals Garon's true form. The siblings are utterly horrified to see their father's monster form. Garon, angered and shocked at this deception, curses Corrin for tricking him, stating anyone who sees his true form dies, and retaliates by swinging against Camilla, Elise and Leo all at once. When Corrin attempts to attack back, the Yato is unable to hurt him.

After Garon attacks again, despite Azura's words, Camilla expresses how difficult they find it to attack the creature they once knew as their father. Corrin attempts to get them to get over their disbelief and help them fight Garon and that what they see before them is not their father at all, but a monster. Garon mocks Corrin about turning his children against them and attacks Corrin again, only for Xander to defend him. Xander affirms that the monster is no longer his father, referring to his real father as stern, but fair, not using his strength against his children or starting a needless conquest of another kingdom.

When Xander tells Corrin that he will lend him his strength, Siegfried reacts, and the Yato transforms into the Shadow Yato, unlocking the Seal of Flames. The Yato is finally able to damage Garon, who begins to break down and prepares to kill Corrin and his own children as Xander convinces the siblings to put aside their disbelief and fight alongside Corrin to put an end to Garon. The Nohrian siblings all declare they will fight Garon alongside Corrin, and the proper fight begins.

Upon defeating Garon, he dissipates into water. Corrin expresses regret at not being able to know Garon's true self. When he begins to celebrate and attempts to free the remaining Hoshidians, Takumi appears from the entrance and shoots at him with an otherworldly bow. Corrin is shocked both at Takumi's survival and his possession by an unseen force. He tries to tell Takumi that the war is over, only for him to repeat the words "betrayal" and "death". Azura tells Corrin they have to kill Takumi as he is possessed just like Garon was. Takumi expresses his anger to Corrin, with him accepting responsibility for his suffering as he blame himself for letting Takumi die and betraying him and with no other choices, Corrin walks towards Takumi with the intent of letting him kill him, hoping his hatred will go away, Takumi shoots him, destroying the Yato and seemingly killing him.

Summary

Corrin opens the door to the throne room, discovering the true enemy that waits for them. The creature within the room is unlike anything he's ever seen.

This chapter's map is 29 columns by 30 rows.

This chapter features stairs that act as warp points between the rooms; by using the "Stairs" command while standing on them, a unit will be transported to the endpoint, and will be left with a movement stat = their base movement - the movement it took to reach the stairs. They are located as follows:

  • Column 1, row 20–Column 13, row 10: Links the southwest room and the main hall
  • Column 30, row 20–Column 17, row 10: Links the southeast room and the main hall

Strategy

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

This section has been marked as a stub. Please help improve the page by adding information.

On Hard and Lunatic, the Shrine Maidens in the four southern rooms each has a single-use, infinite range Entrap staff, which they will use on the first turn to pluck your units into their rooms, each with a dangerous enemy. The exact mechanism which determines what unit a Shrine Maiden will target is unclear, though there is some consistency to it. However, the order they act in is random. Thankfully, the other enemy in the rooms with them will not move until turn 2. It is advisable to kill the Shrine Maidens first so they cannot heal their partners. Unlike the enemies in the four southern rooms, all enemies in the two northern rooms will begin moving on turn 1, as will the Spendthrift squad.

Trivia

  • This chapter is one of few chapters in the game where the preparations theme doesn't play during that phase of setup. In this case, the music from the preceding cutscene continues onto the battle preparations screen.
  • This is the only chapter in the main game of Fates to change ally starting positions depending on the difficulty.
