Glory is won on the battlefield! Glory is meeting your enemy's eyes and watching the hope drain away with his life...Glory is not won holed up in a castle with plots and cowardly schemes. And I'll be dead before I let some dynast farm lord take today's glory in my stead.
— Walhart

The Conqueror is the nineteenth chapter in Fire Emblem Awakening. In this chapter, the Shepherds have arrived at the approach to Valm Castle, where an epic battle against Walhart himself awaits. An event that happens after the main battle appears to swing the momentum of the war back toward the Shepherds' favor.

Plot

Main article: The Conqueror/Script

Chrom, Robin, Frederick, Lissa, and Flavia have gathered at the outside wall of Valm Castle; Chrom promptly asks where Walhart's army is, to which Frederick reveals there's currently no sign of them. After a brief moment of Robin thinking, Flavia states she doesn't like this situation, as Walhart's army could be buying time, to which Lissa asks what they're waiting for.

Meanwhile, inside the castle, Cervantes and Excellus have gathered, with Excellus revealing the Shepherds have no idea just what they've stepped into; Cervantes noting the anticipation before the battle and revealing every single one of his hairs stand on end, making them difficult to brush, then reveals that today's struggle will set the course of history once and for all. Excellus is surprised to hear of a struggle, then mentions that what's about to transpire is a slaughter; Cervantes tells Excellus that he's got spirit (revealing Excellus as a tactician in the process); Excellus says he just finished explaining things to Cervantes and asks him what's wrong with his ears, revealing that the Resistance will destroy itself and they don't even have to do anything as much as lifting a finger. Excellus reveals that the Ylisseans think the dynasts no longer fear Walhart, but they have no idea how persuasive his methods can be, and they'll know once they see their former friends with knives to their backs; Cervantes mistakes Excellus's words to be "chives" and "flapjacks". Excellus, ignoring Cervantes's previous comment, then reveals that the battle's been won before it even begins, without them risking any further casualties, revealing his plan as brilliant and that nobody is capable of judging; Excellus then offers Cervantes tea, revealing he has a stash of gray-root blend, to which Cervantes thinks Excellus is talking about his mustache and thanks him for calling it divine. Excellus calls out Cervantes over his previous comment, then says he shouldn't bother and wonders if there's anyone with the intellect to appreciate his talents. Walhart arrives on the scene and begins an exchange with Cervantes, asking him who is the pinnacle of man in body, mind, and spirit, who is greater than the gods; Cervantes tells Walhart that he is, to which Walhart tells Excellus that Cervantes's response seems to contract Excellus's last statement. Excellus tries to apologize, saying he meant no offense and he only celebrates achievements in Walhart's service; Walhart states glory is won on the battlefield, it is meeting their enemy's eyes and watching the hope draining away with their life--it is not won holed up in a castle with plots and cowardly schemes, and Walhart says he'd be dead before he lets some dynast farm lord take that day's glory in his stead. Excellus tries to get in another word before Walhart leaves; once Walhart leaves, Cervantes tells Excellus that his sick mind sees much, yet for someone so clever he can be quite daft. Excellus chews out Excellus for speaking to his equal as if he were a child; Cervantes says he'll never consider Excellus his equal, and says he should shave and wax up before the fight before he leaves. Now the only one on the scene, Excellus insults Cervantes before also insulting Walhart as well, before telling himself to keep his wits about him, they're all he has besides his looks; he says he should let Walhart charge ahead before insulting him again, then says he'll end up on the winning side one way or another. Preparations take place at this point.

Once preparations are finished, Chrom spots out Walhart and notes it's brave of him to face the Shepherds, to which Say'ri confirms but also states it's more likely Walhart wants to enjoy this battle himself. A scene where Walhart surrounded by troops is shown, where Walhart tells Chrom he does Emmeryn's legacy proud yet states humanity already has a savior--a conqueror who broke stronger men than Chrom when they refused to bow; Walhart then calls out his warriors to ride with him, that together they'll stamp out the final pack of insurgents and unite the world. The battle begins at this point. Walhart will call in reinforcements after one full turn of combat, saying he'll let the cavalry rain upon the Shepherds like a blizzard of swords; the reinforcements start to arrive after three full turns of combat.

Once the battle ends, Say'ri reveals Walhart retreated into the capital and wonders if this war will never end; Chrom reveals his men gave their lives to secure his escape, and they won't lay down their arms until he does. Lucina states that they must pursue them and see that the deed is done. A large number of allied units arrive from the south; Chrom sees that they're surrounded as the dynasts ride against them, but Say'ri asks Chrom to hold and look--cliffhanging into a point where the player may save their game.

We return to within Valm Castle, where Excellus and a Valmese soldier have gathered; Excellus has heard of Walhart's defeat and wonders how he could be conquered--Walhart is supposed to be insurmountable, incontestable, and invincible. Excellus then realizes that Walhart being defeated means he's not what he's supposed to be, then bids the soldier farewell and is about to tell the soldier something else when Walhart arrives on the scene. Walhart asks Excellus if he's going anywhere, to which Excellus stated he was just coming to make sure Walhart was alright, then asks Walhart if he's hurt; Walhart asks Excellus to rally their forces in the capital, that they will put an end to the campaign at the castle. Excellus says he'll do it at once, then asks Walhart if he has considered waiting one day--Excellus has the dynasts and their men on the way. Right as Excellus says what they could do with the dynasts and their men, Walhart asks Excellus if he's seen the battlefield, then concludes he has not, asking him to take his head out from wherever it's lodged and peer out into the daylight--Walhart says Excellus's mighty intellect will quickly understand what's happened, yet Excellus would already know if he had half the mettle of Robin.

We then cut to a shot of the allied units that arrived prior to the point the player was asked to save their game; Excellus shows disbelief, while the soldier reveals that the allied units are the southern dynasts making to siege the capital. Excellus reveals that to be impossible as they had an agreement; as Excellus is about to reveal the agreement with the dynasts is just like the one he had with Yen'fay, he realizes Yen'fay's been defeated and wonders if the southern dynasts found out about him.

Cutting back to outside Valm Castle, where Chrom, Robin, Say'ri, and Flavia are gathered, Say'ri states that the goings-on boggles her mind; Chrom asks Say'ri if she recognizes the dynasts, to which Say'ri confirms--they're the dynasts from the southlands, states that betrayed the Resistance for Walhart, or so she thought. Flavia reveals that the dynasts' allegiance seems clear enough now; Say'ri states she can hardly believe things, as the southlands are the lands Yen'fay commanded, and yet they finally have answered the call. Flavia tells Say'ri it's taken a lot of hard work and sacrifice to get to this point--Say'ri, Basilio and Yen'fay included--telling Say'ri not to forget this moment. Chrom asks that the Shepherds finish what they began and calls the Shepherds to the capital.

Summary

The party challenges Walhart near the capital and forces the Conqueror to retreat. Soon they are joined by unexpected allies: the southern dynasts.

Strategy

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

Firstly, Walhart possesses the Conquest skill, which negates his weakness to Beast Killers, the Beastbane skill, and Armorslayers. Therefore, such weapons should be conserved rather than wasted on him.

On Hard difficulty, Walhart has chances of halving magic damage taken. It is therefore recommended to weaken him enough should a spellcaster be sent to finish the conqueror.
